About

Miami Hurricanes at Watsco Center

Coral Gables, Florida, is home to one of the most competitive teams in ACC men's basketball. The Hurricanes play out of the on-campus Watsco Center, which first opened in 2003 as the University of Miami Convocation Center, and currently seats 8,000. They are coached by Jim Larrañaga, who previously led George Mason University to the 2006 Final Four before joining the Hurricanes in 2011.

Miami Hurricanes Men's Basketball History

Miami Hurricanes basketball has several distinct beginnings. The original University of Miami basketball team first took the court in 1926, but went dormant for the 1929-30 season, from 1932 to 1938, and from 1942 to 1945. In 1960, the Hurricanes made an incredible run to the Elite Eight under coach Bruce Hale. The legendary Rick Barry starred for the Hurricanes in the mid '60s, before a Hall of Fame career in the pros, and also before marrying coach Hale's daughter. However, the Hurricanes lacked a permanent on-campus arena, and had to play at the Miami Beach Convention Center 15 miles away. This contributed to low attendance and, in 1971, the "temporary" discontinuation of the men's program.

In 1983, a drive began to raise funds to restart the program, and on November 22, 1985, Miami defeated The Citadel 85-77 for their first victory in 14 years, en route to a .500 record against a tough schedule. Miami's second act included an initial three seasons at the James L. Knight Center, which was more of an auditorium than a field house, followed by a decade and a half at Miami Arena, before their first on-campus facility opened in 2003. In coach Leonard Hamilton's second season, in 1991, Miami joined the Big East, winning their first regular-season conference title during Hamilton's final season in 2000. In 2013, the Hurricanes won both the ACC regular season and conference tournament championship, on their way to a Sweet 16 appearance behind the play of sophomore guard and Lute Olson National Player of the Year recipient Shane Larkin.

  • Historic Game

This was the first UM game we'd ever been to and it was exciting to experience such fan spirit and loyalty. The Canes played like pros and dismantled Duke which was historic for us to witness. It was the first time a #1 ranked team had ever done so poorly. When UM won the students rushed the floor! The money we paid for the seats was well worth it! We will definitely do it again.

BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC WE GOT THERE AS GAME WAS STARTING BUT BECAUSE OF CONVENIENT PARKING WE DID NOT MISS ANYTHING. ENJOYED THE SIZE OF THE ARENA AS IT SEEMS YOU ARE CLOSE REGARDLESS OF YOUR SEATS. GAME WAS EXCITING AND NOT DECIDED UNTIL THE LAST SHOT. THOUGHT UM WAS KIND OF TAKING IT EASY THINKING THEY COULD TURNED IT ON AT THE END, BUT THEY FAILED. VERY ENJOYABLE EVENING

Great game! It got interesting during the last few minutes.

  • Good arena, disappointing game result

by CanesEric on 3/21/12BankUnited Center - Coral GablesRating: 4 out of 5

The BUC is a good mid-sized arena without a bad seat and the fact they made the entire arena general admission for the game was nice because I got there a little early and sat mid-court and about 12 rows up, so had great seats for $10 plus fees. Just wish the Canes mens team would have won.

  • Missed Entire First Half

    by Broke1 on 2/28/12BankUnited Center - Coral GablesRating: 2 out of 5

The tickets purchased from Ticketmaster showed a 7 PM start time. In actuality the start time was 6 PM. My family and I missed the entire first half.

Great atmosphere. Very crowded in the hallways at halftime. One of the goal zone sides of the arena has no seats in the upper deck for some reason?

i had a great time at the game. The seats were great and the crowd was also great.

  • Good venue and value!

by CanesEric on 2/17/12BankUnited Center - Coral GablesRating: 4 out of 5

Smaller venue on campus which allows great view from even the "cheap seats". We got a package with food vouchers that made it a good deal.

  • nc state beats miami

by packfanmike on 1/24/12BankUnited Center - Coral GablesRating: 4 out of 5

Great game. Too bad miami fans don't support their team. The arena was only about half full. The Ticketmaster seating chart shows the team benchs on thw wrong ends. They should be reversed.

  • Go Wolfpack!

by LindaHC on 1/24/12BankUnited Center - Coral GablesRating: 5 out of 5

This was a GREAT basketball game! Of course, my team won. However, my seats were good, the parking was excellent and so were the popcorn and pretzels! I only wish the Wolfpack could play more than one game per year in this venue. I plan to buy tickets to next year's game between NCSU and UMiami! Thanks!
