Indie-rock outfit Liars was formed in 2000 as a result of a "musicians wanted" ad posted in a New York City record store. Their unique sound was derived from a marriage between synth pads/programmed drums to the fundamental guitar-bass-drums formula of punk rock. Their first album, They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, was released in 2001 and produced in just two days by engineer producer Steve Revitte (Beastie Boys, Lee "Scratch" Perry). Not a band to remain stylistically static, Liars' 2005 release, Drum's Not Dead, once again marked a major musical shift that the band likens to "Brian Wilson's wilder sonic journeys, or Radiohead's embrace of experimental abstraction." Drum's Not Dead is also a highly ambitious and groundbreaking work in that it involves a "cinematic sister project"--36 short films (three for each track) to be included on the standard album CD.
