About

After more than 30 years of a lifestyle that often required lots of time on the road, country legend George Strait has saddled up for what he says will be his final tour, a two-year outing dubbed The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

More than 20 farewell concerts take place between January and May of 2014, and the shows -- many of which will feature a big-name special guest such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Martina McBride, or Sheryl Crow -- are proving to be hot tickets as fans celebrate the storied career of the country mainstay. He announced his retirement from the road during a September 2012 press conference in Nashville, and played more than 20 farewell shows during early 2013.

Strait doesn't plan to ride into the sunset -- he's just done with long tours. He recently renewed his deal with MCA Records, so he'll keep releasing new music and plans to also play select concert dates in the future. But grueling trips aboard the tour bus are in his rearview mirror.
After the Urban Cowboy ethos dominated country music in the late '70s, Strait emerged in the early '80s with his take on classic country stylings, and is often credited with paving the way for other neo-traditionalist superstars like Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, and Randy Travis.
Strait's catalog includes timeless hits like "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," and "I've Come to Expect it From You."

A 2006 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait's remarkable career has included a record 60 No. 1 songs on the country chart. He holds many other country sales records, including most No. 1 albums and most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have more combined gold and platinum albums in their catalogs.

A native of Poteet, Texas, south of San Antonio, Strait grew up in neighboring Frio County. He first took up music in high school as a member of a rock garage band. After a stint in the Army, he  earned an Agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos while playing in a bar band that performed around central and south Texas.

Strait signed with MCA Records in 1981, after Erv Woolsey, who ran one of the bars Strait's band played, urged Nashville talent scouts to check him out. Woolsey went on to become Strait's manager.

    Obnoxious fans

by George Strait on 10/25/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Very expensive concert to deal with fans that talk and laugh throughout...lesson learned.

    Great show, solid venue.

by Heather Ann on 10/25/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Overall excellent show. The line up was a country fans dream, and all artists performed as well as we'd hoped. Mercedes Benz stadium was a nice venue, but the acoustics on the floor level as well as the availability of food, beverage, and restroom options for floor seating were poor.

    ALWAYS A SPECIAL CONCERT

by Wayne on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The professionalism and personality simply oozes from this man throughout the show As well as when he plays and sings and speaks to the audience. Living away at home each time 41 of our heroes is just something that touches everyone's heart and lets everyone know truly what kind of a man he is. Anytime it's available. I will make sure I can find a way to get to anyone of his concerts that are either local or remotely close.

Could not understand the words because the music was loud

by Bar on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The music was so loud you couldn't hear the words to the songs. I will never go to a concert at MercedesBenz again!

    George-Great!, Sound system-stink!

by Deb on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

George Strait will ALWAYS be the king of country music, and we were so excited to see him and Willie and Carrey and Little Big Town in person all on the same night! They were all great and sang their hearts out, but the sound system and acoustics in the Mercedes Benz Stadium were clearly designed and meant for athletic events, NOT musical concerts! We had paid quite a bit for fantastic floor seats, but were clearly disappointed when we struggled to hear the actual words the country stars, George included, were singing. We could actually hear the words sung better when we put our fingers into our ears to muffle out the echoing going all over the building! And as awesome as George Strait is, with all of his number 1 hits throughout the years, I was surprised to observe that he chose to sing less of his top hits and more of his earlier songs that simply did not grab the interests of his audiences and fans. I saw lots of people tired of waiting to hear more of his top hits and leaving the concert early, and so did we.

    King of Country Music

by Gracie on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

One of the best concerts I’ve been to. The lineup was amazing and there was no bad seat in the stadium. All hail King George

Great Artists, Disappointed in Stadium Sound

by db on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The artists were absolutely great. The acoustics in the stadium were not good. There was some echo and at times it was hard to understand the lyrics (even when I knew the lyrics). The Mercedes Benz Stadium needs much larger TV monitors. The lower section seats were so far from the stage which meant all you could do was watch the TV monitors. Overall, we enjoyed the event but would not likely return to this stadium for a concert.

    Worth every penny!

by Eleven on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Every concert should have the star power and line up like the George Strait ATL concert! Worth every penny and each musician played like they were the main event with fan favorite songs! I hope George doesn’t retire, because he sings as good today as he always has! Best concert I’ve been to and was the longest concert, too! ❤️

    Awesome experience!

by jlf on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

My family and I had a wonderful experience at our first concert at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Little Big Town, Willie Nelson, Carrie Underwood, and George Strait put on an incredible show. The show started on time and lasted over 6 hours! The whole experience was great. Entry was a breeze, the staff was super friendly, and food and drink prices were very reasonable. I've heard some complaints about sound in this venue but I thought everything sounded great. Thanks for a great show!

    Venue

by Christy on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The show was fantastic but did not appreciate that the venue did not have a smoking section. I mean we paid alot of money to go to this concert and felt discriminated for smoking.

    Awesome Concert and Experience

by Jimbo on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

All the performances were great but George Strait showed why he is the King of Country. My seats in section 128C were very good. Truist Club exceeded out expectations. Food was phenomenal, bar well stocked and facilities were clean. Staff were very friendly and made sure our experience was great.

    Loud

by Beth on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

When the instruments are so loud, it makes it hard to hear the singers voice…then, it’s just too loud. Carrie Underwood sounded like she was hollering. A few times, George Straits words were hard to understand, even though I knew the words to the song.

    Great Show, Bad Logistics

by Peggy on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The concert itself was fantastic. It was a great lineup of tremendous artists who put on a great live show. The only problem was the restroom/concessions accommodations on the Floor area in Mercedes-Benz Stadium were abysmal, considering how much Floor seats cost. The staff was nice, but there were not nearly enough restrooms or concessions stands to service the amount of Floor tickets they sold. We walked up the stairs into the regular concourse and experienced extremely short wait times, whereas the restroom line on the Floor stretched all the way down the hall and around the corner. We spent at least 40 minutes in line for food and drinks, almost all of Willie Nelson's show. And even though you had to pay with a card for your concessions, their point of sale software didn't allow for employee tipping, meaning that if you didn't have cash, you couldn't tip the employees. That's completely different than the regular concourse concession stands. The one good thing about the Floor concessions line was at least you could still see the show. We missed Carrie Underwood's introduction because we were not able to make it back in time from the restroom. Overall it's a great show and our seats were fantastic, but avoid the concessions/restrooms on the Floor at Mercedes-Benz. The accommodations don't live up to how expensive the Floor tickets cost.

    The concert in a can

by Jim on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

I’ll pass on any future concerts in that venue. I was on the floor, in section J, and every sound the performers made were echoed. The performers were as close as they could get to perfection. My wife and I enjoyed the concert and had a great time, but the echoes were annoying.

    Disappointing.

by Vfred on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The sound was horrible - couldn’t hear what the performers were singing. It echoed off the stage. My seats were on the floor section - poor signage on how to enter the stadium for floor seats. Disappointing that there was no food concessions on floor level - had to climb up lots of stairs to get to the food.

Some excellent some good too long

by North Ga WANDERERS on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The venue experience was good- walked from nearby boutique hotel, avoided all the parking hassle The venue event workers were really helpful and welcoming. The catering for the vip experience was excellent, plenty of food there- but really just nibbles Almost missed the opening act because the vip event lasted until 5:30 and the concert actually began at 5PM-mmm LITTLE BIG TOWN was really good, very energetic and young by comparison Willie was the best I have heard him in the last few years- not at the very top of his game- but wow what a legend and what a privilege to see him again. Carrie Underwood is not my cup of tea- but I thought she did and excellent concert and I know many come just to see her. I have to admit my ears were tired by the time George strait came on stage at 9:15PM (4hours of concert before he sang) He gave FULL VALUE 2+hours. This was my first time to see him and I was really impressed. Very professional, very giving and very patriotic. I love his music, and I think this is one of the best produced concerts I have seen. I loved the giving of the house, and the badge song and the effort to feature Atlanta area badge wearers, I honestly was almost in tears by the end of the song. I really appreciate every little detail he put into his production. What a professional, as well as a great singer! Just for me a concert that starts at 5PM and ends at 11:30PM is too long to really enjoy each and every performance— but is was QUITE A SHOW!!! Thank you KING GEORGE!

    Amazing concert

by BK on 10/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Now I know why they call him King George....amazing talent and performer. Exudes charm and brings the audience in. Carrie was in full voice...so much energy and strength in her voice and performance. Willie is an icon and great to see him perform all the favorites and Little big town got the audience fired up with their beautiful harmonies and big hits. The concert was fabulous and worth every penny. Each performance was different and the combination was magic!
