Show great - Climate control not so

Fantastic dancing, choreography, and of course Gershwin. The execution of moving from scene to scene was almost seamless The cold air pouring on us distracted from it all.

Talented performers who must have worked incredibly hard to give such strong dance performances. Voices were strong. Set design was fantastic in fowvtecnology was incorporated. Showcrqn too long only - dancing could have beenshorter in last act

The reimagined choreography for An American in Paris was outstanding. In contrast to the mostly tap dances of the movie version, this production had a lot of ballet, jazz and modern dance, which made it beautiful to watch.

A delightful musical of the old school

by BaboM on 8/5/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

It's not the film and it's not Gene Kelly, but it's pretty good. With music by Gershwin, how can it miss? I would have preferred to have seen the primary male lead, but we had the actor/dancer who performs the matinees. An excellent dancer, but somewhat bland. The lead actress was charming and a lovely dancer; I also liked the actor who played Henri. The highlight should be the "An American in Paris" ballet, but I was put off by the geometric designs of the costumes. I know it's impossible to recreate the film's ballet, but the costuming left me cold. What I especially liked was Henri's "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" number - Art Deco set, gents in white tie, tails, and top hats, and showgirls in plumes and glittery costumes. Wow! In short, the play was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Post WW2 France, simple backgrounds and costumes, happy Gershwin tunes, beautiful dancing. Leads are wonderful dancers, very smooth, very confident.

I loved every minute of this performance! The ballet was breathtaking and of course you can't go wrong with Gershwin! It is a must see!

    Enjoyable

I think the play was a little dated but I did enjoyed it. It had a lot of ballet in it, which I love, but my husband does not like ballet. It certainly wasn't my favorite play but I am glad I saw it.

    Just ok

Not my favorite...it was somewhat funny, but also cheesy at times. A little hard to follow, but overall neat to have a "theater" experience.

I enjoyed it, but I really love dance. The person I went with found some of the dance scenes to be far too long. I think whether or not you should go depends on how much you enjoy watching dance itself.

    An American in Paris Disappoints

by Naperville1 on 8/4/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The best summary was my daughter who said she could have left during the second act. They seemed to forget about the plot in the story. They did a poor job of developing the characters. The performance was all about the dancing. If you are a big fan of dancing, you will love the show. It was just too much for us. I would not recommend this show. It is a great story, they just seemed to "dance around it all night".

    Beautiful production

by MagChicago on 8/3/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

An American in Paris is a wonderful production. I saw the original Broadway cast, and this cast was as good or even better in some roles. The dancing was spectacular and the staging is minimalist but effective. If you love ballet and lyrical dance, or if you love Gershwin, I expect you will love this show. Fantastic orchestra as well.

    What a show.

by Propsguy on 8/2/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I've done backstage work and was the props manager for several Community Theater musicals. The whole experience of "An American in Paris" was astounding-the orchestra and sound, the actors in character, the dancing and costumes, the sets and the lighting. I was dazzled by the scene of "Stairway to Paradise." Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this marvelous show.

    S'wonderful!

by Junebug1059 on 8/2/17Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Well-acted and beautifully danced, this production of An American in Paris was lovely. How can you beat Gershwin tunes--more than half a century later, they still make you hum along.

Great Gershwin music, including Cuban Overture and "I Got Rhythm" Variations, combined with excellent dancing = a real treat for serious ballet fans. Glorious costumes. Show went by fast.
