About

9x-Blue Music Award Winner & 20x-Blues Music Award Nominated Guitarist, Singer & Songwriter Tommy Castro & The Painkillers formed in 2012, creating a high-energy, larger-than-life sound! The band has coalesced into one of the telepathically tightest units Castro has ever assembled, making them one of the most in-demand live roots music acts performing today, delivering soul-shaking, muscular music.

Tommy Castro received 5 Blues Music Award Nominations in 2022, winning "Album of the Year" ('A Bluesman Came To Town'), "Band of the Year", and "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year" - the highly coveted and prestigious Blues Music Award given every year to the most outstanding live performer. In 2023, Castro was again Nominated for "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year" (his 4th Nomination) as well as "Blues Rock Artist of the Year" (his 3rd Nomination). Castro has also been Nominated 5 times for "Contemporary Blues Album of the Year", winning the award 2 times!

Throughout his long, constantly evolving career, Legendary Guitarist, Singer & Songwriter TOMMY CASTRO has always remained true to himself while exploring, growing and creating new music. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums - the last seven for Alligator Records —each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work.

"The hardest thing to do," says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro, "is be yourself, take some chances and bring your fans along with you."

Tommy Castro kills it Ophelia’s in Denver

by Rars on 10/16/23Ophelia's Electric Soapbox - Denver

An amazing 2 1/2 hour show. This 68yr old blues man has more energy than musicians half his age. His playing is exemplary his show is non stop energy. Second half of show with Deanne Bogart joining the band was masterful and helped maintain that level established in the 1st half until the end of the show. Don’t let his age fool you this blues man will rock you like BB King or Muddy Waters he can still bring it every night.

    Amazing experience

by Cindy on 9/25/23Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

I have seen Tommy Castro before at the Fairfield Theater in Connecticut around 2010. He was fantastic then , but even better in 2023 . This time at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth NH . Back then in 2010 he had an extraordinary bassist in Scot Sutherland . I didn’t think he could replace Scot . At all . But … when we saw Randy McDonald perform as his current bass player , we were pleasantly surprised ! Randy has a stage presence rarely seen in bassists . Tommy was the ultimate performer, playing music that spans his very long career . From present day blues to some very old songs that I had forgotten about or hadn’t heard at all before. His keyboardist Michael Emerson is above perfection and drummer Bowen Brown round up the whole of what makes Tommy Castro and the Painkillers so unique . Not a dull moment in their entire set . We were totally above entertained . And Tommy so thankful for the audience positive reaction . Jimmy’s is a first as well as we have never been to this venue before . The only down side was we were seated with a woman who appeared to have a stick up her *ss, but we just ignored her because seating is such that you can position your chairs to face the stage . She really wasn’t a factor but we’ve always sat with great happy people before in any venue that has small tables . The venue A+ as well as the band . Tickets were obtained easily with fast delivery ! I would use Ticketmaster again in a heartbeat. Wonderful experience for the entire event !

    Fantabulous!

by Cody on 4/18/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I have been seeing Tommy Castro perform for 25 years and have never seen a bad show. The first one I saw was in St. Augustine, FL in a very small restaurant/bar. That's when I fell in love with him and his music. I have been to see him all over Florida including the Ponte Vedra Music Hall on 4/12/23. He was as awesome as ever! As pure as ever! And as entertaining as EVER! He, pure and simple rocks my soul!

Tommy Castro 41223 Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

by Ric on 4/15/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Good seat, small crowd, friendly theatre staff, easy entrance. Major plus, the theatre had my name and gave me a paper ticket! 1st performer, David Julia. Very good but a variety of musical styles. His set seemed to last forever although probably 30-40 minutes. Feature performer, Tommy Castro and the Painkillers. Top flight, professional, acted like he liked the crowd and wanted to perform well. Excellent set. Will see again as soon as I can

Tommy is one of the most genuine blues players out there. Clearly loves to play, capable of a wide range of blues styles, excellent singing and playing. His show was super fun and I'm glad I finally got to see him. Would love for him to headline Springing the Blues festival!

Tommy Castro and The Painkillers rocked the blues! Added bonus... Deanna Bogart joined them for this event! Had a great time! Saw them at the same venue in Sept 2021. He wasn't signing due to lingering COVID concerns, and that was totally understandable. I had a photo I had wanted him to sign and he said "We'll make it happen next time." True to his word, he signed the photo, another photo and a CD at this event. I'm very happy and intend to see them every time they come to the area.

Tommy and his Painkillers killed it!

by FatsMaine on 3/29/22Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Third time seeing Tommy Castro, he's still a master! 2 years off from going to concerts because of the pandemic, this was my first one back. SO GLAD it was to see this show! If you get the chance to see him, just GO!
