About

9x-Blue Music Award Winner & 20x-Blues Music Award Nominated Guitarist, Singer & Songwriter Tommy Castro & The Painkillers formed in 2012, creating a high-energy, larger-than-life sound! The band has coalesced into one of the telepathically tightest units Castro has ever assembled, making them one of the most in-demand live roots music acts performing today, delivering soul-shaking, muscular music.

Tommy Castro received 5 Blues Music Award Nominations in 2022, winning "Album of the Year" ('A Bluesman Came To Town'), "Band of the Year", and "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year" - the highly coveted and prestigious Blues Music Award given every year to the most outstanding live performer. In 2023, Castro was again Nominated for "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year" (his 4th Nomination) as well as "Blues Rock Artist of the Year" (his 3rd Nomination). Castro has also been Nominated 5 times for "Contemporary Blues Album of the Year", winning the award 2 times!

Throughout his long, constantly evolving career, Legendary Guitarist, Singer & Songwriter TOMMY CASTRO has always remained true to himself while exploring, growing and creating new music. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums - the last seven for Alligator Records —each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work.

"The hardest thing to do," says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro, "is be yourself, take some chances and bring your fans along with you."

Tommy Castro has changed & not for the better

by Albertochacha on 4/4/16State Theatre, Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo

Don't get me wrong Tommy Castro put on a heck of a good show, lots of fun but I personally really liked his old band. Not to mention he did not play "Chairman of the Board" and that alone is unforgiveable!!! Another thing is Kalamazoo State Theatre now has seating all the way up to the stage so the dance area is gone - even Tommy Castro commented how awful it was not to have people dancing. We did do some dancing but had to all get jammed into aisle. Also an obnoxious guard at the stage was always making people move back!! I remember the good ole days when Tommy Castro would let people up on the stage with him and his band!!! Overall the concert was OK but I don't think I would go to see them again, and I am a almost 20 year fan!!!

Tommy Castro and others were great! But ...loud!

by Intaijo on 4/4/16State Theatre, Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo

Music was great and mix of music was good! Sound system was set too loud and it was difficult to hear keyboard and vocals at times. I like drums and base, but it needed to be a little more restrained. The concert started too late, after the two very good warm up bands. The concert could have started an hour earlier to make it more enjoyable. The sound intensity seemed to increase as the night went on and the great music was made less enjoyable as my hearing loss became greater!

My first time seeing Tommy Castro & the Painkillers and was not disappointed! High energy and very engaging! Really kept the crowd on their feet throughout the performance! If you have a chance to go see them I definitely recommend it. The fact that the opening acts were Out of Favor Boys and Larry McCray were a big draw for us! We've seen them before and knew they would start us off rocking! Another memorable event!

Great Show, perfect venue! Love the new stuff off their new album, "Method to my Madness,", especially the call to sanity, "CommonGround." Loved the old stuff too! Amazing guitar work and hard rocking nods to old time blues. Vocals were wailing! Tommy Castro gets the audience right there with him and we loved it!!!
