TV ON THE RADIO IN CONCERT:

Acclaimed Brooklyn indie band TV on the Radio thrilled fans in late 2014 with the release of Seeds, their first album since the 2011 death of their bassist Gerard Smith. The record was a triumph for the band on numerous fronts -- a tribute to a departed friend, a commitment to pressing on, and, in the opinion of frontman Tunde Adebimpe, their finest work to date. Critics and fans agreed, applauding the album's potent blend of synthpop and art rock and hailing tracks like "Happy Idiot" and "Careful You" as instant classics. TVOTR are a powerhouse live act known for their technical virtuosity and effortless cool, and their visceral performances on tour always treat ticket buyers to the perfect blend of arty indie rock and straight-ahead rock and roll.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

TV on the Radio was formed in Brooklyn in 2001 by singer Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist David Andrew Sitek. They self-released their debut album OK Calculator the following year, promoting it by passing it out on sidewalks and leaving it in local cafes. Coffee shop buzz gave way to international acclaim in 2004 with their studio debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, an ambitious and eclectic record that charted in the UK and made them critical darlings overnight. Their rise continued in 2006 with the album Return to Cookie Mountain, a critical benchmark that featured vocal contributions from David Bowie and dominated year-end lists. They cemented their crossover success with 2008's Dear Science and 2011's Nine Types of Light, both of which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. In the wake of bassist Gerard Smith's unexpected death in 2011 the band went quiet for a few years, but they returned in 2014 with their highly anticipated fifth album Seeds.

    Mixed Bag at the Bowl

by BigZapFan on 10/2/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

A very strange mixture of bands that rushed through the shows. I enjoyed Warpaint, but Panda Bear was tiring.

    Unremarkable

by AmorFati on 10/2/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Arctic Monkeys should have been headlining this show! They were so captivating...especially considering the fact that we had never heard of them before this event. Unfortunately, TV On The Radio's performance reminded me that some bands aren't worth seeing live. Very dissapointed. Definitely will not be attending another one of their shows in the future. Not even JD was of any help here. Happy we were able to bring our own alcohol. Otherwise, this show would have been a complete waste of time and money.

TV on the Radio Horrible Sound

by richieroman on 10/2/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was in the balcony for the TV on the Radio show at the Fox Theater. Even though this is one of my favorite bands and they were no doubt excellent, in the balcony the sound was so distorted and cranked to the max that every song in the middle section sounded like nothing except white noise. Many people in the balcony were complaining about the sound mix and how they would probably not come to another show at this venue. This was also my first at the Fox Theater. In contrast, last night I went to see the awsome show by Broken Social Scene at the Fillmore. Even though at times there were as many as 12+ people on stage, the sound was pristine and pure, with the ability to hear each instrument clearly. The crowd was definitely appreciative. Come on Fox, get your sound problems fixed!

    Loved Warpaint

I went to this concert to see Warpaint. They were terrific. Wish they could have been on stage longer.

    Ruined by poor sound

by gahgah on 10/2/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've seen two other shows at The Fox and neither had such poor sound. Everything was pretty muddy and dense, which is partly the band's sound anyway, but the vocals were very thin and buried in the mix, I could barely hear and understand Tunde and Kyp, even when they were just talking in between songs. Other than that the band put on a solid show and the crowd was definitely into it. I just wish that I could have heard individual instruments and especially the singers better. :/

    Arctic Monkeys Were ROBBED!!!

by indologist on 10/2/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Arctic Monkeys were shockingly underlit and under amped. It looked like whoever did their lighting borrowed it off some amateur wedding dj. Seriously, it was complete with a weak little fog machine on the side. The kind that might be suitable for a basement party in the eighties. The sound was clearly lower volume and worse than the people before them or TV on the Radio after them. They are a huge band with a rocking sound, but it barely filled the Bowl. The highs were distorting, just unbelievably bad sound. They also were set up to use about one-fifth of the total stage available to them. Whoever did their sound, lighting, and stage management robbed the Arctic Monkeys of a great show.

    Fantastic show

by BeccyP on 9/28/11Ogden Theatre - Denver

I love both of these bands. Listening to them at home they are great, but live is even more incredible. Seeing the bands together at one show was a fabulous combination.

The light show and overall theatrics of TV on the Radio was incredibly captivating. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful group of souls to Denver, and for sharing your music!

    Great show!

by mestrella on 9/24/11Ogden Theatre - Denver

There was so much energy! This was my first time seeing these guys and I was just introduced a month or two ago. I would definitely see them again.

Broken Social Scene was fantastic. But, the sound quality during TVotR's much louder set was rather poor. The bass drum overwhelmed everything else, making it quite monotonous. This is the second time I experience questionable sound quality at the Ogden.

TV on the radio was great. The sound was good and the performance was fun to watch, though for some reason the energy just wasn't where I expected it to be. Still definitely worth seeing though - this show was a blast! Broken Social Scene was incredible. The interplay between the musicians and the way they switched instruments between songs was so fun and inspiring to watch. I expected them to be good but TV on the Radio to be the point of the show, but Broken Social Scene managed to completely outshine TVOTR in my eyes.

This show was amazing! Broken Social Scene is mind-blowing and it would have been a great show if they played all night long- something I'd like to see them do someday. Then in contrast to TV on the Radio, it was perfect. Denver loved both of these bands. BSS was a perfect warm up to the loud and rowdy rock that TVOTR later performed. overall, this show was absolutely delightful!

    awesome show

    by paige67 on 9/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

This was my first time seeing these guys live and they lived up to all my expectations! I simply love their story and ability to tell stories through such meaningful music. They literally blew the roof off the ryman. I would love to see them at an outdoor venue where acustics would not limit the depth of the sound. Love, love, loved this show! I am obsessed with tvotr!

Broken social scene was phenomenal. TV on the radio had awesome energy but were a little too loud sometimes to showcase the unique sound I know they have from hearing their albums.

    BSS rocked it

by Kevnation on 9/22/11Ogden Theatre - Denver

So I got my shift covered at the shitty restaurant where I work so I could drive down to Denver and see Broken Social Scene at the Ogden. I saw them back in March at the Boulder Theater and they were amazing. They are just great all around entertainers. I love their music and they play a lot of good shit. Anyway I did will-call, so I had to stand in line with a bunch of loser pseudo-intellectual types chain smoking and talking about DU and local government and other bullshit. When I finally got inside the atmosphere was stellar, BSS were starting and the crowd was loving it. Guitar solos, reverb, horns, soaring vocals, strong percussion, floating keyboard notes, all the usual pieces fell into place and the show was good as always. 7/4 Shoreline and Meet Me in the Basement were some good jams. I didn't go to see TV on the Radio. Instead I saw Kevin Drew and Lisa Lobsinger in the alleyway after BSS finished their set and made it back to Boulder to think about shit.

TV on the Radio was beyond words

by Monnaie on 9/22/11Ogden Theatre - Denver

Having BSS open for Tv was ideal, I was sufficiently impressed and satisfied. TV played a great set with insane energy and I would see them again in a heartbeat.
