TV ON THE RADIO IN CONCERT:

Acclaimed Brooklyn indie band TV on the Radio thrilled fans in late 2014 with the release of Seeds, their first album since the 2011 death of their bassist Gerard Smith. The record was a triumph for the band on numerous fronts -- a tribute to a departed friend, a commitment to pressing on, and, in the opinion of frontman Tunde Adebimpe, their finest work to date. Critics and fans agreed, applauding the album's potent blend of synthpop and art rock and hailing tracks like "Happy Idiot" and "Careful You" as instant classics. TVOTR are a powerhouse live act known for their technical virtuosity and effortless cool, and their visceral performances on tour always treat ticket buyers to the perfect blend of arty indie rock and straight-ahead rock and roll.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

TV on the Radio was formed in Brooklyn in 2001 by singer Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist David Andrew Sitek. They self-released their debut album OK Calculator the following year, promoting it by passing it out on sidewalks and leaving it in local cafes. Coffee shop buzz gave way to international acclaim in 2004 with their studio debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, an ambitious and eclectic record that charted in the UK and made them critical darlings overnight. Their rise continued in 2006 with the album Return to Cookie Mountain, a critical benchmark that featured vocal contributions from David Bowie and dominated year-end lists. They cemented their crossover success with 2008's Dear Science and 2011's Nine Types of Light, both of which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. In the wake of bassist Gerard Smith's unexpected death in 2011 the band went quiet for a few years, but they returned in 2014 with their highly anticipated fifth album Seeds.

    Moving and soulful!

by Sqareah on 10/25/11Florida Theatre Jacksonville - Jacksonville

This band has to pick their set list based off of the crowd they are performing for! They know how to get you moving and shaking. By the end of the show there were very little people left sitting in their seats.

    TV on the Radio Rocked

by Phillerup on 10/25/11Florida Theatre Jacksonville - Jacksonville

I had seen them before and Loved them. I thought they were even better this time. They totally bring it. I was dancing my butt off the whole show. I wasn't sure, at first, about seeing them in this venue, since it is all seating, but it worked out. No one sat down anyway. I can't wait to see them again.

    Everything I Hoped For

    by WSP92 on 10/24/11Florida Theater - Jacksonville

If you're going with the hope of seeing TV on the Radio play their hits and blow you out of the water....you're in luck. From the opener of Halfway Home to the closing encore of Satellite, Tunde and the band's energy was incredible the entire time, evidenced partially by Tunde's shirt being soaking wet by the night's end. Yes, it is cliche, but Tunde sounds just as good, if not better, in person. The same thing goes for Kyp Malone, it actually surprised me how high his voice could go. I had concerns about the sound because the first song was a bit bass heavy, but the theatre must have worked it out because the sounds on the heavier songs still came out great. They don't interact with the crowd too much save for Tunde doing this weird call and response thing during the encore (it was actually pretty cool). Overall, an absolutely fantastic band of musicians who put on a show that you won't forget and will leave you wanting to see them again next time they're in town.

Love this band, but what's wrong with the sound??

by thomyorkefan on 10/11/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Show was great, in spite of the usual sound issues i have with the Fox Theater. Some people tell me it's because I stand so close to the stage, but I don't buy that. I stood in the very front for the Flaming Lips last year and the sound was excellent! But I stood in pretty much the same place for TV on the Radio and some songs were great, others were way off balance. More thorough sound checks needed in all parts of the room, perhaps?

    Something didn't quite fit...

    by Neenee83 on 10/4/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I thoroughly enjoyed every set but the Arctic Monkeys. I really wish they would have picked a different band to open for TV On The Radio, but I wouldn't let one bad apple ruin the bunch. A+ performance by ALL of the bands, even the Arctic Monkeys.

    A perfect night

by Anonymous on 10/4/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Every act was incredible. Panda Bear put on one of the best shows I've ever seen and Warpaint were fantastic. Arctic Monkeys were great and TV on the Radio ruled. Terrific all around.

TVOTR was amazing-- the others not so much

    by 1DAF on 10/4/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

TVOTR blew up the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday Sept. 25th. They were high energy with great sound slightly more raw than their albums which I think added to the feel of the show. I would definitely see them again, the only reason for not giving five stars is that they played for about an hour. For a headliner they should have had a much longer set. Because they were on stage for such a short time many my favorite songs didn't get played. The Arctic Monkies played right before TVOTR and were on for about the same amount of time and were nowhere near as good. In fact although they sounded fine I was tired of them about half way into their set since most of their songs sound so similar. Usually at the Bowl three bands play but on that night they squeezed in five which I assume is the reason for the shorter set by TVOTR. Next time put the usual three on the bill so we can see more from one of the most innovative and talented bands around, TV on the Radio.

    Intense!

by FrenchT on 10/3/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Great show. Discovered some bands, such as the Smith Westerns and Warpaint, who were both very tight and great musicians. Warpaint does great harmonies and made me think of a mix of The Cocteau Twins and Tegan and Sara. Panda Bear were not bad, with psychedelic images on the screens. Not the best for a concert. Maybe better for a club. Arctic Monkeys were great and TVOTR were VERY intense. Great way to end the season at the Bowl.

A varied and experiential setlist that felt like a perfect movement of mystical energies, provocative thoughts, and trance-inducing dancing that opened my spiritual awareness and expanded my consciousness. I LOVE TVOTR!

TVOTR ruined by the A/V team

    by KSF23442345 on 10/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I love TVOTR and have listened to them since the 1st album....I was really looking forward to this show...but it was ruined by the A/V team...just too damn loud. I'm all for loud music, but when you have turned it up past what the speakers can take and the crowd just hears squelch, you've ruined the show.

    another awesome bowl experience

by Tothers on 10/3/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

My concert review of Sunday's Hollywood Bowl show: WARPAINT - awesome cute chick band who are moody in a good way! PANDA BEAR - started groovy but descended into annoying trippy noise. ARCTIC MONKEYS - they almost stole the show with their high energy set. TV ON THE RADIO- seeing them was on par with a religious experience..

    Everything but the sound

by VioletMoon on 10/2/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

TVOTR are one of my all time favorite bands. The Fox is beautiful. The lighting was amazing. But I stood right in the middle of the theater, about 30-40 feet from the stage, and the sound was absolutely awful. Loud and noisy, you couldn't hear the instruments and different parts, hardly differentiate the vocal or at all understand the lyrics. It was really sad to have such amazing music played/mixed so poorly! I don't know if it's the Fox's sound guy, or if TVOTR tours with their own (I'm guessing it's the former because the opening act was equally terrible to listen to, and I heard that M.Ward was also terrible in sound at the Fox). The sound is quintessential! I don't know if I will ever go to the Fox again if they can't sort that out. It certainly was a waste of money this time :-(. I heard other people walking out saying the same thing "they played all my favorite songs and I didn't enjoy it at all..." Also, though I hate to say it because I have such love and respect for this band. But my sense was that they sort of rushed through their songs at times. And they mostly played their faster tracks, and hardly any of their pretty acapella stuff. But I think also they must still be grieving...

    WISH WARPAINT HAD LONGER SET!

by Maluca on 10/2/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Always LOVEEEEE going to the bowl! Unfortunately, Warpaint had the quickest set I have ever seen them play while Arctic Monkey's went on for what seemed like decades (of sound that my ears are still trying to drain out!). TV on the Radio rocked our socks off, which was definitely worth it! Just wish they could have switched WP and AM's set times!!!!

Arctic Monkeys were worth the price of admission

    by Alch3mist on 10/2/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Smith Westerns were fresh and on target. Warpaint was a revelation. But the reason I went was to see the Arctic Monkeys, and they played 17 songs in 50 minutes. They just rocked the Bowl and held nothing back. Their drummer is ridiculously good and Alex Turner pours so much emotion into his voice it is hard to believe he sings these songs pretty much every day. It was a dream come true for a fan of the "Ahktic Monkeys." (Just listening to that British accent is really fun).
