About

Spring Awakening is a deaf accessible show that is signed in ASL simultaneously with speech. Deaf patrons seeking to understand through sign would best be served by a seat with a center view of the stage rather than a seat with close proximity to the stage.

Spring Awakening is the story of two star-crossed lovers: the brave and brilliant Melchior and a beautiful, young, deaf girl named Wendla. The musical follows this turn of the century Romeo and Juliet as they learn how to communicate, and how to love, in a world that’s trying to keep them apart.
EXTREMELY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT - NOW THROUGH JANUARY 24 ONLY!

"ONE OF THE GREAT MUSICALS OF THE LAST DECADE IS BORN ANEW."
–The New York Times

"A FIRST RATE PRODUCTION OF A TRANSPORTING MUSICAL."
–The New York Times

“BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL.”
–New York Magazine

"REVELATORY & MOVING. An original all its own"
–Newsday

“ELECTRIFYING & EXHILARATING. A Sheer Triumph!”
–AP

Deaf West’s production of SPRING AWAKENING floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, “It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's SPRING AWAKENING is so very, very good.” Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York. When it debuted on Broadway, SPRING AWAKENING’s raw and honest portrayal of youth in revolt shattered expectations of what a musical could do, earning it 8 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (for writer, Steven Sater) and Best Score (for composer, Duncan Sheik). Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden and starring Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Deaf West’s SPRING AWAKENING is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion, but it’s only on Broadway through January 24th.

    Stunning and Spectacular

by Tim234 on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I went in with no expectations, as I was not a fan of the original production (or the score). What a revelation this production is! The beauty of the sign language and other movement is breathtaking. The acting and vocals are transporting and heartbreaking. The direction finds every nuance in the lyrics and script. This is a rare treat and not to be missed.

    Unlike Anything I've Ever Seen

by PurpleSummer on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Truly one of the most unusual and powerful productions I've ever seen. They've incorporated deaf actors and deaf history seamlessly into an already fabulous musical that adds layer upon layer of meaning. The acting, lighting, choreography, set design etc were all phenomenal. A spectacle worth watching. 10/10 would recommend.

    Captivating revival!

by Theatregoer01 on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Using deaf actors made this production mesmerizing and much more poignant. The actor in the wheelchair was terrific.

    Don't Miss This Show

by ZoeBud on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Sorry - previous review sent in error : I admit to having some reservations about seeing this version of Spring Awakening especially since the original show was one of my all time favorites - boy was I wrong! The current production is brilliant. Under the deft direction of Michael Arden and choreographer, Spencer Liff this show has been elevated to another stratosphere. Watching the actors sign much of the dialogue is akin to watching an intricate and moving ballet. Overall, the entire cast turned out an unforgettable performance that will live on. BRAVO!!!!!

    Not your typical Broadway show!

by Anonymous on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Absolutely amazing!! I loved how they incorporated sign language. Was great for my deaf sister. The singing and acting was top notch. Definitely different from any other Broadway show I've seen. The music is also incredible. I went twice I love it so much!! Thank you to the Deaf West Theater for taking this on!!! Not a bad seat in the house.

    Must See!

by JacFre on 1/12/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

The only negative part of the play was the Sim-Com. It would have been better to have more shadowing.

This show is absolutely amazing. Though there is a lot of sexual content in the show, it carries a very important message that needs to be heard. The use of American Sign Language is very powerful, and adds a layer to the meaning of the show.

    Absolutely breathtaking

by JSL453 on 1/8/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

We didn't know how we were going to concentrate with the signing and singing at once, but it was more natural than expected. The sign language made the performance even more moving than I even thought it could be. I saw the performance on Broadway 8 years ago and it was breathtaking then but this production was brilliant in all aspects. The staging was incredible, the singing was incredible, and the actors were top notch. I could not have been more impressed. Wish I could see it every night!!!!!

    SPRING AWAKENING amazing!

by bakemont on 1/8/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Had seen BIG RIVER by this company so I was pleased to finally get good seats for SPRING AWAKENING. Found the production flawless as well as the cast; the direction; the design; the sound and the beautiful orchestra. Of course there were more elements that contributed to this amazing evening but what pleased me so much is that all of it moved as one. That is, all the elements that went into this evening supported each other to produce an evening of total entertainment as well as understanding and education. I was very happy leaving the theatre because my experience of this event elevated me; educated me and made me feel included. Thank you.

    Spring Awakening is Life Changing.

by Dudleylover on 1/7/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This show was the best I have ever seen. It was incredibly interesting, the songs were performed entertainingly and pleasingly, and the characters were completely believable. If my word isn't enough- I went to see this show with my sister who doesn't enjoy musicals. She has not stopped talking about how good the show was. It is slightly more inappropriate than I originally thought I knew, but for the right age this show is a perfect mix of joy, pleasure, loss, and sorrows. The sign language was super cool and made the show a thousands times more interesting (which is saying something because the show is well-written in general). If you are on the fence about seeing this show, please just go. You won't regret it.

An amazing play, marred by SimCom

by Microchap on 1/7/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This is the best play we have ever seen -- so amazing! We are Deaf ourselves, and we were glued all the way through. Deaf West Theatre needs to avoid SimCom (simulatenous communication using sign language and speaking at the same time -- ASL and spoken English are two completely different languages and when you combine both, ASL often suffers). Still, we loved the play.

    Transcending!

by bwaybae on 1/7/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Never in my life have I seen such a beautiful and transcending show on Broadway. It was as if Michael Arden took a perfect show and took it to a completely new level. The addition of ASL is not only breathtaking, but is unbelievable that it was not meant to be in the show in the first place. The cast was absolutely perfect- Daniel Durant brings acting to an entirely new level. Absolutely in love with this production and can't wait to see what else Deaf West has in store. Completely genius production.

    very disappointed

by annadamma on 1/7/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

Although the acting and staging were good and the actors were good, I was very disappointed. I couldn't understand any of the words that were sung and there wasn't a cohesive story, more like a series of numbers. Perhaps I just didn't "get it". Also, we had to wait outside for 20 minutes in numbing cold which was unpleasant in the extreme, before they opened the doors at, at the end of the line even if one was on time and not early, it was a long wait on a day with subzero wind chill. There must be a better way!

Wish the Sound Hadn't Been So Garbled

by MichaelBl on 1/5/16Broadway - NYC

The current version was captivating and well performed. But the sound was very garbled. Largely couldn't understand the words to most of the songs.

    Such an incredible production! Ingenious!

by rouxlejour on 1/5/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This production is ingenious. If you don't know about it, please, it's worth your time. Deaf West Theatre is great, and this is so thoughtful how they chose this show, how they staged it, and how they integrated signing and titles into the action and art of the show itself. The book and music are very good material on their own, but this production really takes the show to a new level.

    Pretty Bad

by Rockrolex on 1/5/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This show was not worth the money we paid to see it. I would not recommend this show to anyone. The signing didn't bother me, although it, and the singing voice that accompanied the signor, was distracting to my wife. This show may appeal to the teen angst, but it was not worthy of the great reviews it got.

    brilliantly staged

by grandmalib on 1/5/16Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This was a very moving play - well acted, remarkably creatively staged. I had hopes of the survival of one sympathetic young person. Didn't happen and I suppose that's good drama but I would have gathered otherwise.
