Seattle Sounders FC History

The Seattle Sounders joined MLS in 2009 and quickly built a Western Conference powerhouse, winning four U.S. Open Cups, one Supporters' Shield (2014), and two MLS Cup Championships in 2016 and 2019.

Jordan Morris was named the 2019 MLS Comeback Player of the Year after recovering from a torn ACL that sidelined him for nearly all of 2018. In 2019, the Sounders earned the No. 2 seed in the MLS Western Conference and qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the 11th straight season. In 2021, the Sounders became the first MLS club to advance to the finals match of the annual North American Leagues Cup tournament, and in 2022, the team won the interleague CONCACAF Champions Cup.

When attending a Seattle Sounders game, you can hear thousands of fans from the Emerald City Supporters group chanting "Seattle Sounders, here we go!" to the tune of The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" at one end of Lumen Field. At the other end of the stadium, thousands of fans from The North End Faithful sing atop the thundering beat of the in-stadium Sound Wave Marching Band.

Global soccer site Copa90 called the Sounders experience the "most incredible fan culture in the US."

    Double the fun

by Janet on 9/2/21Lumen Field - Seattle

From all the entertainment, the free flags, being able to cheer on the Reign was fantastic, then to cheer on the Sounders . Family friendly , this should become a tradition double header.

    Reign-Sounders Soccer

by JD on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Great seats except for near rude loud Portland fans. Minimal services up on the 300 level so people were packed in lines on op of each other waiting for food. After the game, the South East exit ramp was closed at 200 level and fans were herded like cattle to a SW stairway. It was mayhem and a fire hazard. Unsafe for Covid exposure and exiting the stadium.

    Why?

by CC on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Why could I not sell 2 of my 7 tickets, I could only sell all.7? There was not social distancing in the stands, so that is not a valid reason.

Why don’t the reign play in Seattle more?!

by Soccergirl on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Such a pleasure to see the the WMLS play. Both the thorns and the reign played well, and seeing Megan Rapinoe score twice? That’s priceless! The men were fine; they played poorly and deserved to lose to portland.

    Next Time!

by Michelle on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Getting into the venue wasn't a big deal. Sorta expected with such a large crowd. However if Sounders ever do a double header event again and allow re-entry between events, they need to either send 2 tickets to everyone. One for the first event, and one for the second event or just reverse the process to get out of the venue as you did coming in. You can't have thousands of people trying to leave an event at the same time and only have 1 or 2 people scanning EVERY single ticket. It just didn't work. Crammed together, no line, and COVID to boot! Just thinking of the next time since this time didn't really work. But the idea was wonderful.

    Lack of concessions

    by G on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

300 level had more than half of the food concessions closed and very long lines that were open. The games were good, but being there for 2 games there should have been more food and more concession employees. The ones that were there worked very hard. I liked the format of city vs city, both men's and women's teams. The should schedule more.

    Fun Day of Soccer

by Adam on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Women great, men not so much

by Reign fan on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

Women’s game was great, professional and good sport. Men were too busy with gamesmanship and less with the sport. Organizers should have shortened the gap between matches, especially on a Sunday night

    Let it Reign!

by Andy on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

What an amazing experience! I definitely got lost twice but that’s my own fault. The Reign deserve to play in a stadium like that for every match. My only complaint is food prices are bananas

    Could be better

by SSFC fan on 9/1/21Lumen Field - Seattle

The hype didn't quite live up to the reality. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to keep tens of thousands of fans confined to the stadium during the pandemic didn't think this quite through. Then that policy changed and the lines to get out of the stadium were too long. We gave up. Then the lines indoors were long and crowded. Which probably wouldn't have been so bad except we're in a pandemic. There needs to be a better way to get fans in and out of the stadium in between games. It's not good practice to keep fans confined in the stadium for hours. Highlight was having OL Reign. Even though I'm a Sounders fan, they made the day for me. Lastly, what was up with no moment of silence for our fallen servicemen and women in Afghanistan? I'm not an indiscriminate supporter of the military but it's still so fresh, I would have thought that the flags at half mast and singing of the anthem that there would be at least some acknowledgement of what happened.
