San Diego State University Aztecs at SDCCU Stadium

Now that the NFL's Chargers have cleared out of town, the Aztecs are the principal tenant of SDCCU Stadium (formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium, formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium). The stadium sits about five miles from the SDSU campus. Designed for pro crowds, SDCCU Stadium offers a loose fit for the light-drawing Aztecs, who make up for it with an entertaining brand of mostly nighttime football.

The team's trademark is its all-black uniform, which dates back to the era of coach Don Coryell. The mascot is the Aztec Warrior, and a "warrior shield" accompanies the team on the sidelines, to be held aloft after victories during the fight song. About two hours before kickoff, the players accompany the Marching Aztecs and members of the spirit squad on the Warrior Walk from the stadium's parking lot to the tunnel leading out onto the field.

San Diego State University Aztecs Football History

The first San Diego State football game was in 1921, but the history of Aztecs football began in earnest with coach Don Coryell, one of the greatest innovators ever to walk a sideline. Coryell took over as coach in 1961, leading San Diego State to undefeated seasons in 1966 and 1968 in the NCAA's small-college division and in 1969 at the NCAA's top level. Instead of competing directly with college football's big schools, he built his program by doing the things they tended not to do. He recruited heavily from junior colleges, and on offense he took to the air rather than play the game on the ground. The Aztecs produced a number of NFL quarterbacks during his time on campus: Don Horn, Jesse Freitas, Dennis Shaw and 1980 NFL MVP Brian Sipe. Coryell decamped for the NFL in 1973, and his radical emphasis on the passing game came to be known as the Air Coryell offense.

If Coryell put San Diego State on the map, it was Marshall Faulk who left an indelible mark. A nimble-footed, soft-handed running back, in 1991 Faulk recorded one of the best freshman seasons in college football history, rushing for 1,429 yards and 23 total touchdowns, while scoring 140 points in all. As a junior, in his final season, Faulk did a bit of everything, running for 1,530 yards and catching 47 passes for 640 yards. In 1994, Faulk was the second overall pick in the NFL draft.

The temperature was too hot. The Aztecs did not lay well.

    Stadium Disappointment

by Jason on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Stadium has no shade. Large bar area near end zone has lots of tables but only two umbrellas. People leaving with paramedics because of heat exhaustion. No place to get water except to purchase at $6 each. Seats were half empty by half time. They either left or were sitting outside under stairs and tables.

    Worst stadium experience

by SN on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

This place wasn’t built for any outdoor sport that happens during the day. And definitely wasn’t built for a southern california daytime event. There is NO shade, & no place to sit or congregate along the food areas or bars. There are about 15 small METAL chairs in the sun. No screens (i.e Petco Park with small screens when you are away from the field) This place was forced to provide free bottled water at their opening event because of how many people were suffering heat stroke and couldn’t find relief from the sun. Drink choices are dismal and unimpressive. It’s hard to get into 1 of the few bar areas because they are the only spots that are covered, so your only realistic choice is a grab-and-go can of beer or a seltzer - black cherry only as far as I could find. I was with a large party at the opening event and none of us will be returning to this stadium.

Overall great stadium, but some significant issues.

by Nick Gadler on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

The stadium is amazing. Gorgeous and there is not a bad seat in the house as far as viewing is concerned. The food is fantastic. The beverage areas / bars are excellent and offer great views from most of the vantage points. The SDSU side has been pushed right up against the field making it quite vertical while the visitors side is a bit farther away and sloped up gently. This should provide for a big home team advantage because the sound volume the home fans can generate will be much louder than the visitors side... all by design. The only problem with that is that the seats on the West side are so vertically oriented that I fear they will be dangerous going up and down them especially once someone has had a few beers and needs to quickly run to the restroom. There will be falls and injuries - that I'm sure of. Another issue I see is that unless you pay thousands of dollars for the few box seats, you will be in the sun... or the rain (think Holiday Bowl several times over the last 15-20 years) either way, that can be somewhat uncomfotable. Another negative is that there are several areas (like most stadiums) that are completely off limits to most patrons unless they have paid the big bucks to access them. One is the Dos Equis bar on the mid East side of the field. I am sorry but that should be opened up to anyone wanting to get out of the sun to grab a drink on that side. There is one bar at the Southwest corner of the South end zone which has some shade, but you'll have to walk quite a distance to use it. So overall its a great stadium with some flaws. The seating being almost entirely in the sun, as well as the near vertical seating on the West side are flaws that can't be changed. The access to bars and refreshment areas are definitely something that could be changed and would make the exerience FAR more enjoyable for the average fan. I hope the people in charge of the stadium will read and consider this.

Beautiful stadium that leaves a lot to be desired…

by Pete on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Overall the sight lines and makeup of the stadium are great, but the overall experience was just ok. There is a clear lack of accessible shade or cool locations, unless you are lucky enough to be sitting in a suite or luxury area. There are very few tables or benches to eat at if you don’t want to eat in your seats. The food is good, but you cannot customize orders which is frustrating. There are plenty of restrooms but a lack of water fountains and water refill stations. They were clearly unprepared to open the stadium and I hope it improves going forward.

$1,000 Horror Show - A day to forget, but can't

    by J. P. on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Parked on dirt for $60. Suffered 40 minutes on entry for a poorly staffed security staffed burdened with octogenarian alumni and phone tickets. Once in, fans passing out from dehydration and heat stroke or hiding from the sun in the stairwells and planters trying to avoid dehydration and heatstroke. Who builds a stadium IN SAN DIEGO with no shade? It gets hot here in September, really hot sometimes five miles inland. They could have easily have designed a lightweight cover they could stretch across that would have completely altered the experience. Near the end, the staff at Snapdragon rallied and brought out buckets of ice and water but too little and too late.

Great Venue - Sit on the home side

by Aaron on 12/8/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

Seats were really close to the field, sitting on the away team side, the TV camera and away team signs got in the way of being able to see the game, it was not ideal. It seems like the food and beverage options were limited for this specific event. I'd recommend sitting on the home team side anyday.

Can’t wait for new Aztecs stadium

by Jim on 12/7/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

The experience at Dignity Health is a joke. Everything about the experience is designed to separate you from your hard earned $$. Start with the $40 “tailgate” parking (more then the ticket cost of the game). There is $20 non-tailgate parking, good luck finding it. No signage, access roads blocked off, long walk to stadium etc. Doesn’t stop when you get inside. Paid $24.82 (with tax!) for a 20 oz diet soda and a 12 oz (not 16) draft non- premium beer. The only thing getting this to 2 stars is the stadium itself is nice, nice field with good site lines. If you can take an Uber there and not buy anything to eat or drink, you may have an enjoyable experience.

Great game a long long way from home

by Tom on 12/1/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

SDSU had a great game to win their division. Dignity Field was a nice venue with easy parking and ok concessions. It’s a long, long way from San Diego. 3 hours to get home was too long. My first and last game there

    SDSU vs Nevada

by Tina M on 11/16/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

We live out in Murrieta but wanted to see an Aztec football game this year. Went out to Carson for the SDSU vs Nevada game. First time at the LA Galaxy’s stadium and it was great. Pretty much every seat in that stadium has a great view. Will definitely consider coming here for a soccer game too! Very good covid policy in place and was very quick to get entry into the game. The stadium is all cashless but they have machines that can convert your cash to a prepaid card which was a great thing for those who only carry cash. Of course stadium prices for food and beverage are always high, but you gotta know that going in. Overall had a great time and luckily the Aztecs won!!! But big shoutout and recognition to all the local Crenshaw fans (about 200 of them) that were there to see their guy Henley play on the Nevada team.

    What a great experience!

by Niki on 11/16/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

Such a great experience for teens! Easy to park, enter, enjoy the game, and leave. Great seats. The SDSU game personnel went out of their way to help our son celebrate his birthday. A memorable (and inexpensive) experience for a group!

    Big Brother is watching

by Brandon on 11/2/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

$40 to park. Have to be vaccinated, must wear a mask, and can’t bing in a bag or purse - even if completely empty. No wonder the venue showcasing two top 25 teams was a graveyard. Well it was Halloween so I guess it makes sense. Last Dignity Health event I attend. Maybe you blame California o maybe the Mountain West. But done with this Woke culture. My body my choice right. Sooooo done!

Terrible. We never even got to go to the game.

by EBeers on 11/2/21Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson

Traveling to SD and thought a Aztec game would be fun. Should have a warning the SDSU stadium isn’t open and they are actually playing in LA! Just said Dignity Health Stadium…I had no idea that wasn’t their stadium. What a waste!

    Aztec BYU Game

by Aztec for Life on 12/3/19SDCCU Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

The seats that we had for the game were great! Awesome view and the crowd was really into the game. The game itself was awesome with SDSU beating BYU in an old rivalry. The concessions were good with short lines and great service. Overall, I will definitely be going to more games in the future!

    Need the new stadium

by Doncoyote on 11/12/19SDCCU Stadium San Diego State Aztecs - San Diego

Getting the tickets was easy peasy, getting to the stadium was the same. Pre game and tailgating was on par with other experiences. Crowd was a decent size (25,000+). The only problem was that the stadium is quite old and getting out of date. The crowd in attendance looked scattered and small in a stadium that is supposed to hold 60,000+. Hardly any refreshment stands and concessions, P.A system was poor and so on. But again it’s an old stadium. The good thing is that starting in 2022, the SDSU Aztecs will be playing in a new stadium. Hopefully. The plans are in the works, or so I’ve been told. Overall a good experience but definitely has room for improvement with the venue
