San Diego State University Aztecs at SDCCU Stadium

Now that the NFL's Chargers have cleared out of town, the Aztecs are the principal tenant of SDCCU Stadium (formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium, formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium). The stadium sits about five miles from the SDSU campus. Designed for pro crowds, SDCCU Stadium offers a loose fit for the light-drawing Aztecs, who make up for it with an entertaining brand of mostly nighttime football.

The team's trademark is its all-black uniform, which dates back to the era of coach Don Coryell. The mascot is the Aztec Warrior, and a "warrior shield" accompanies the team on the sidelines, to be held aloft after victories during the fight song. About two hours before kickoff, the players accompany the Marching Aztecs and members of the spirit squad on the Warrior Walk from the stadium's parking lot to the tunnel leading out onto the field.

San Diego State University Aztecs Football History

The first San Diego State football game was in 1921, but the history of Aztecs football began in earnest with coach Don Coryell, one of the greatest innovators ever to walk a sideline. Coryell took over as coach in 1961, leading San Diego State to undefeated seasons in 1966 and 1968 in the NCAA's small-college division and in 1969 at the NCAA's top level. Instead of competing directly with college football's big schools, he built his program by doing the things they tended not to do. He recruited heavily from junior colleges, and on offense he took to the air rather than play the game on the ground. The Aztecs produced a number of NFL quarterbacks during his time on campus: Don Horn, Jesse Freitas, Dennis Shaw and 1980 NFL MVP Brian Sipe. Coryell decamped for the NFL in 1973, and his radical emphasis on the passing game came to be known as the Air Coryell offense.

If Coryell put San Diego State on the map, it was Marshall Faulk who left an indelible mark. A nimble-footed, soft-handed running back, in 1991 Faulk recorded one of the best freshman seasons in college football history, rushing for 1,429 yards and 23 total touchdowns, while scoring 140 points in all. As a junior, in his final season, Faulk did a bit of everything, running for 1,530 yards and catching 47 passes for 640 yards. In 1994, Faulk was the second overall pick in the NFL draft.

    Getting better every game.

by GaryB on 10/12/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Definitely learning from the mistakes seen in the first few football games. I still have issues with how expensive the food is though, ridiculous. Cut the prices by 1/3 and they are still high but at least they would be more reasonable and I think they would sell alot more.

    Great environment

The sight lines were great. Atmosphere was top notch. Security were alert. Vendors all friendly. Price for parking on dirt was overpriced.

We parked amongst a majority of SDSU Fans

by Boysan on 10/11/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

First, the parking crew did not seem to know how to direct us to our area. They just waived with flailing arms and said, “I think it’s somewhere over there.” I figured it out on my own. We parked amongst a majority of SDSU Fans. As we left our car to enter the stadium, we noticed a large group of guys drinking and playing some games. They kept staring us down because we were the only non whites and we were wearing colors for the opposing team. We smiled and said hello. They just kept snickering, drinking and playing. When we returned after the game, we noticed all their beer boxes and bottles strewn all over our area (we did not bring alcohol). We also noticed beer cans on our car and beer poured all over the car. Additionally, we noticed beer bottles and cans positioned under our tires and all around our car. We did not feel safe nor welcomed. I had to clean up all the mess on and around our car. Thankfully, the guys did not break our windows and I was able to find a car wash opened late at night. Don’t you have people monitoring the parking lot for bad behavior and drunk people who get out of hand? The workers appeared to not care. We will probably never attend Snap Dragon Stadium again. We shared our bad experience with our family and community.

    SDSU Football

by KO on 10/11/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Game and stadium were great. Paid $40 to park in a gravel lot with no markings and very few signs to direct to exits. Chaos is an understatement. This needs to improve ASAP if you expect people to pay for parking. 5 stars for stadium and game, 0 stars for parking. Use public transport!

Great Stadium But Game Was Not Entertaining

by Andiego1953 on 10/11/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

I’m a 5 year Basketball season ticket holder and Saturday I attended my first game at the new stadium. The product on the field is not big time college football, primarily because the Aztec offense is predictable and simply boring. Due to the Aztecs lack of creativity on offense, the game was almost lifeless and didn't generate much excitement in the stands. Hardly anyone joined-in on the fight song and the SDSU/Aztecs Fight yell was a murmur. The experience is nothing like the energy in Viejas for a basketball game. Two, I did not appreciate the rap music blasted through the loudspeakers before and during the game. I’m a fan of music but something less obnoxious and blaring would be better for those of us 30 and up. Three, I spent over $200 to attend an event that had very little entertainment value. It was so bad that I left after the 3rd quarter. This SDSU alum won't be back until the football program changes course.

    Pros and Cons of Snapdragon

by aztecfan? on 10/11/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Pros, you can still tailgate! Cons: If you have upper level seating be prepared for a Stairmaster workout! All of the restrooms, concessions, and drinks are on the first floor. Serious set of stairs! While I'm not handicap, I didn't see anything that supported ADA or handicap people. Perhaps there's a special section, but no curb access for people in wheelchairs that I could see. You better be in top shape to climb many curbs and steps. Qualcomm was better in the fact each level was self supportive. Snapdragon there's no support, only on the lowest level.

    Better than first game

by GaryB on 9/28/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Some things were learned from the first 1230 game, it was slightly cooler which helped too. Extra water stations set up to refill water bottles helped me greatly. Food is still mostly super expensive and I was very upset the first game with the parking fiasco. So this time I chose to use the trolley, so glad I did, alot cheaper than parking and didn't have to deal with employees giving wrong directions.

    No shade

No shade, $30 parking, narrow seats and aisles. That was my first and last time at Snapdragon

    Hot!!!!!!

by Melch on 9/27/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Stadium is amazing with great food selection and local beer. What the stadium lacks is shade. Boy was it challenging sitting under the sun and baking. Wife and kids looked cooked and miserable. I would recommend keeping the game times to a later time or provide some shade. I will definitely not attend another noonish game.

The new stadium is awesome! The parking is not bad and walk not too far. Events outside of stadium very cool. The only thing that would help...shade!!!

    Snapdragon and Aztecs

by Don on 9/13/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

First game we attended was against Idaho and it was a Great game! The stadium was beautiful. Layout of concession stands, bars, souvenir stands, etc. we’re very nice. Seating and view from the stands was fantastic! We didn’t tailgate but I liked that the whole area behind the parked vehicles was open to bbq’ing, sitting, games, shade canopies, etc. Everyone was enjoying themselves and there was a lot of interaction between tailgating camps. It looked like a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to tailgating the next game we go too. To sum it up, we had a wonderful time and look forward to going to snapdragon stadium again.

    Spacious

by Happy Aztec Family on 9/13/22

Entering the stadium was easy, but found it odd how long we drove in before they took our parking pass. We did not like how we can't park in a designated place/area or near our other car. You can only park where they place you. We all like to tailgate near each other, let us. We loved the walk into the stadium! The greenery and openness makes you feel grand as you approach the gates. Security was a breeze and as long as we had our mobile tickets easily accessible we were good to go. Upon entering we were in awe of the beautiful bar and eateries. There were so many places to get food or beverages. The bathrooms were extremely clean (should be as they are NEW), but I hope they stay that way. I wish our section, 117 was signed better as it was not labeled on the top. The view from our seats was great, we didn't have anything blocking a single view. There was a cooling mister section that the kids loved. The weather was great for a 5pm game. The heat wasn't an issue, nor was having shade. If there are afternoon games and it was going to be hot, I may re-consider going, but evening games are AWESOME!

    Parking traffic Mgt was pathetic

by Sherm on 9/7/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Someone should be fired for the failure to plan or adequately prepare and align appropriately trained personnel to manage traffic. This needs to happen 1/2 mile away from the stadium. Not just the last 100 yards. This failure created such a bottleneck that a 15 min drive over from local eatery took over 70 minutes. Missed kickoff, flyover, etc… it was a total CF! Not only do you need more bodies - but ones that are competently trained. We had the JV team out there directing. Cars blowing right by. Pathetic.

    Hottest Day Ever!

by BiGG House on 9/7/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

It was great to be part of history to see the first Aztecs game at Snapdragon Stadium, but the heat was a little too much! I understand the majority of events will be at night, hence having no canopies, but the Ice machines ran out by halftime, with bags of ice being placed next to the Ice Machines later on (Unsanitary, anyone?). There is a lot of room for improvement for the new venue, and I worry for sellout events being able to handle the crowds!

WHAT A SAD JOKE! ....NO ROOF!!!!!

by Terribly Disappointed on 9/7/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

No roof for about 95% of AZTEC FOLLOWERS ...and others? PLENTY OF FOOD AND BOOZE COURTS AND MEMBER$HIP CLUBS....but NO ROOF? WHAT A SAD JOKE! Plus all around circulation within the stadium blocked in sections 125?-127? to accommodated people with mobility issues ( I believe), which is quite valid, but was this VERY IMPORTANT -basic- need not considered at stadium design phase? WHAT A SAD JOKE!. People going from one end to the other, need to turn around and walk back all the way to your seats. I am SOOOO GLAD I DID NOT PURCHASE SEASON TICKETS! Sincerely Terribly Disappointed

    The new stadium sucked

by Bill on 9/6/22Snapdragon Stadium - San Diego

Opening day was a disappointment no shade where fans sit , could not go on the balcony without special access, could not go in any of the lounge restaurants without being a season ticket holder , trash everywhere food sucked , bottle filler stations were not cold water , entry to the stadium sucked as they funneled 4 lines into one at each entry point . Snapdragon hyped up a looser stadium that does not have works class experiences as described. Ice machines were out. Not worth the $220 a ticket I paid. That’s a $50 $60 ticket stadium. Wont be going back if I don’t have too
