The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six awkward adolescents through their daunting and hilarious championship quest. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric coterie finds a new sense of belonging. Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every night. Peter Flynn (1776) returns to direct this heartwarmingly quirky Tony-winning musical comedy.
Great play- acting was excellent and writing was hilarious!
Hilariously beautiful! Incredible production with an incredible cast!
I have never laughed so hard or so long. It is great to include people from the audience.
What an awesome show! Great musical with such a clever story line, cute and sweet! The use of audience members made the show much more endearing than the average show as the audience could actually feel like they were a part of the show.:) (Because they were!) Too much fun!
File this one under the category of "light, breezy entertainment." The music was enjoyable and the show itself was just silly, smart fun.
Funny and entertaining. Enjoyed the audience participation too.
After its long New York run and decent buzz, I was look forward to seeing Spelling Bee. We're avid theatregoers in Washington, New York and London, and we enjoy all sorts of straight plays and musicals. In the end, Spelling Bee can't overcome the fact that it's about a spelling bee, which, unless you're the parent of one of the spellers, is about as boring an event as one can imagine. Because of this, the show simply falls flat, and I don't say that often. The book is trite and predictable, the music is quite literally terrible (and often irrelevant), the excursions into the lives of the participants and their families are forced at best and bizarre at worst. The injection of civilians from the audience to participate in the show is a cute gimmick, but in the end doesn't work to enhance either the show or the performances of the professional actors. The cast does its best with what it has to work with, which isn't much. There are a few classic comedy moments that elicit roars, but in balance that's pretty thin gruel spread over an hour-and-a-half of "could you use that word in a sentence?"
I can't remember ever enjoying any play as much! Exceptional cast!
I have seen 3 performances at Ford's Theatre recently, & this was fantastic as were the other 2. The plot was outstanding, great choreography, & the performers did a tremendous job with all the singing!
Show was great! Way to go cast and crew! Venue was beautiful.
With the play showing at a historically significant building we weren't sure if the play would be the main attraction or the venue. We were pleasantly surprised that the quality of the actors was excellent. The script is very funny. The use of four people from the audience added some special moments. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
The play was just so so. I did not find that much humor in it.
Spelling Bee was a fun show. It was not the greatest show I have ever seen but it is enjoyable.
The cast was outstanding and we laughed until we cried. I'm so glad we were able to see this funny play
Spelling Bee is a good night of mostly family friendly theater. The cast was talented and exuberant.
Very entertaining, and you get a chance to take in the aura of the Ford theatre as you wait for the show to begin.
We loved Putnam County Spelling Bee! It was truly hilarious! I think I laughed the whole time. Highly recommend!
The play was a delight from start to finish. The actors played their parts beautifully and all had great singing voices. They really seemed to enjoy themselves. Costumes were colorful. While the show was a lot of fun, there was also a serious side to some of the actors' stories--real problems facing real young people. The use of audience participants was handled very well. Lines were added to the script to characterize them; the lines were witty and clever. Only negative was that two female actors sang into their microphones so loudly that I couldn't detect the words.
Great show, great fun. The show has four members of the audience participating as spelling contestants. It became interesting when one of the contestants held her own on the 'words'. The moderator finally give her a hint about her not understanding the intricacies of musical comedy. Great time.
So much fun!!!!! Great evening of laughter with friends and fun engagement with audience members. Highly recommend it!
