Portland Trail Blazers History

The Trail Blazers joined the NBA in the 1970 expansion. Despite the presence of back-to-back rookies of the year Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks, they struggled, finishing last in their division five of their first six seasons. Then, in a remarkable reversal, they went 49-33 in the 1976–77 season, led by big men Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas, guards Lionel Hollins and Dave Twardzik, and head coach Jack Ramsay.

After defeating the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers in the first three rounds of the playoffs, they found themselves pitted against a powerhouse Philadelphia 76ers team led by Julius Erving, Caldwell Jones and George McGinnis in the NBA Finals. They dropped the first two games of the series but stormed back to win four straight to capture the franchise's only championship.

Title in hand, the Blazers would go on to make the playoffs 25 of the next 26 seasons. For 12 seasons starting in 1983, the catalyst was guard Clyde Drexler. In the 1989–90 season, with All-Star forward Buck Williams joining the team, the Blazers again made the NBA Finals, falling in five games to the Detroit Pistons. They posted a franchise-best 63-19 record the next season but succumbed to the Lakers in the Conference Finals. Another trip to the NBA Finals awaited in 1991–92, but the Blazers lost in six games to a Chicago Bulls team led by Michael Jordan.

The Blazers' forays into the playoffs continued through the 2002–03 season, with two of those trips, in 1998–99 and 1999–00, ending in losses in the conference finals. Beginning in the latter half of the 2000s, the team reached sustained regular season success behind notable talents like Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Roy and Lillard both received the Rookie of the Year award for their respective first seasons.

    Portland VS LA Clippers

by Arcelie on 3/22/23Moda Center - Portland

It was an amazing experience that everything went well. There were plenty of staffs available when we needed their assistance. Starting from the line up, we were given a heads up to go in the bag line since I have a bigger purse, our bottled water in my bag was removed for safety reasons, and the waiting time in the line up wasn’t that long. A staff also offered to take some photos for us since we were having a hard time getting a good background.

    Was simple and easy

by Rick on 3/22/23Moda Center - Portland

Everything went smoothly, my party of 2, went out for a cigarette break, and almost couldn't get back into the ballgame after halftime. That was our fault for not reading the rules. Thanks. We had a great time!

Not a bad seat in the stadium. Relatively easy to get around. Definitely recommend events at the Moda Center.

    trying but no cigar

by Joez on 3/20/23Moda Center - Portland

Players making simple mistakes over and over. Sloppy play. Except for a few, no real teamwork. Sad. Hoping next season gets so better players and working on basics.

    Company blazer game

by Kyle on 3/17/23Moda Center - Portland

Volume levels in the 300 sections need to be louder. Decent time. Hard seats. Awesome seeing new mascot.

    Great

by 1 Simons fan on 2/17/23Moda Center - Portland

Upon entry the “scan barcodes” option was hard to find- make it a big, obvious button instead of a small print that is hard to see

Nice to see Klay have a good game in front of some of his home people. Dame looked great.Great assist for a crowd stomping dunk! Jordan Poole was great 38 points in a losing effort.

    Fun game

by Wuny on 2/11/23Moda Center - Portland

It was fun watching the game but wished the Warriors had pulled through and played better the last 5 mins in the 4th quarter. They gave that game away with that loss.

    Give the noise a break.

by Rich on 2/1/23Moda Center - Portland

Overall, a great experience. Moda Center is a terrific venue overall. All the staff was really friendly. Only qualm is even during play there was always loud noise/music/beats being projected. It would be nice to actually hear the players on the court, the shoes squeaking, etc. A little break from all the noise once in a while would be nice.

    Awful WIFI

by Sean on 2/1/23Moda Center - Portland

When the attendant at the door needed me to refresh the Ticketmaster app on my phone because foolishly I thought I was being prepared by pulling my tickets up ahead of time before we left home, I stood off to the side for ten minutes making one futile effort after another to close, re-open and sign in to the app as well as restart my phone altogether all the while my kid looking worried that we wouldn't get in to the game and having one attendant after another come over and make a spectacle out of me and telling each other "he can't be standing right there" and ultimately telling me I would have to go back outside and walk around to the other side of the building to the box office to get sorted out. I walked outside, turned off my phone's WIFI and was able to sign in to the app and pull up my tickets no problem. Get it fixed. It's a bad look that a company doesn't have adequate WIFI coverage at the entrances so that their paying customers can enter without being embarrassed and it also puts their employees in a tight spot where they have to keep the line moving and deny someone entrance all the while causing a scene.

    Portland = Partyland

by Marcusmomma on 1/31/23Moda Center - Portland

Moda Centre is a cozy venue for a large space. Blazers game was non stop entertainment. No hesitation to recommend a night out there … even if you are a Canadian travelling south to see the Raptors take a W.

    Great game lousy parking

by Joe e on 1/28/23Moda Center - Portland

I loved the blazer game - when I was able to get into the building. The parking at Moda Center is run by the devil himself. People shouting, cars backed up for miles, rush hour traffic honking, and pedestrians all over the place. I waited 15 minutes just to be told that I had to turn around and get into a Different parking line that stretched for 2 miles - I ended up parking in the street and ditching my $30 spot. That being said our 300 level seats were actually pretty good and the game was amazing. Can’t wait to go again but the parking situation there is absolutely appalling.
