Portland Timbers History

The Portland Timbers joined MLS in 2009 and wasted little time in their mission to prove that The City of Roses was a proud soccer city. Under head coach Caleb Porter and Newcomer of the Year recipient Diego Valeri, the Timbers clinched the top spot in the Western Conference in 2013, earning their first-ever playoff berth. By 2015, the squad had notched their first MLS Cup victory over the Columbus Crew. Valeri would continue to play for the club until his retirement in 2022 after cementing himself as one of the biggest stars of MLS and earning the league's Most Valuable Player in 2017.

Led by head coach Giovanni Savarese, the Timbers topped the Western Conference for a second time in 2017 and followed the next year with a spot in the MLS Cup Final match against Atlanta United. The Timbers were ultimately defeated, but the match managed to set a then-record for league attendance with 73,019 fans checking in at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Portland won the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament and made another run to the MLS Cup Finals in 2021, but fell to New York FC on the Timbers’ home pitch at Providence Park.

Portland Timbers at Providence Park

Built on one of the most historic grounds in American professional sports, Providence Park is located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland and is the oldest configured, soccer-specific stadium in the MLS, dating back in some form to 1893. The 25,218-seat facility has since undergone several renovations, in 2001 and 2019.

Providence Park currently hosts the Portland Timbers as well as the NWSL’s Portland Thorns. The pitch has also presided over matches for the MLS Cup, MLS All-Star Game, and two Women’s World Cups.

Was sitting in Section 95... in the pouring rain.. one of the few sections without a cover. I loved the game, the atmosphere, and had a great time.

DO NOT miss a chance to see the Timbers live. I hated soccer until a buddy dragged me to a game last year. Now I'm a HUGE fan and can't get enough of the atmosphere, fan ship and passion that the Timbers Army and fans bring to the game. Better sporting event then any other I have ever been to. The Blazers are now living in the Timbers shadow.

    Awesome opening

It's the Portland Timbers, you can't go wrong. It was cold and wet, and we didn't have the best seats, but the game was fantastic and made up for everything.

Look, in my humble opinion the Timbers are simply the best thing since sliced bread. My wife is entertained just from people watching....but she says soccer is cool. The only crappy thing was when my printer wouldn't recognize the PDF file that the ticket came in. No worries, just get a screen shot and hurry your ass to the game!

Jeld-Wen Field needs to rethink Section Seating

    by Lobos2000 on 3/14/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

The Timbers opening game on March 12 was a great game.... If we could have seen it. We bought tickets in Section 211 and we were right up against the wall of the Box Seat section. We couldn't even see to Mid Field. The tickets were sold as "partial obstructed view," but SERIOUSLY.... these shouldn't even be sold. There were 15 rows that were tarped off behind Section 210 that could easily have been sold instead of 211. These had far better viewing of the field. Now that we are MLS, I think the stadium management should understand that you can't enjoy a soccer match if you can't even see it. Close section 211 and open up those higher up rows behind 209 and 210. Meanwhile I'll work on buying better seats for the next games. I'll just stay clear of the lousy Nose-Bleed section.

The tickets I bought for $15/each were in a spot where we couldn't even see the other goal or replay screen - almost half of the field. Thankfully it wasn't a sold out game, so we just moved to other seats, but holy cow! I can't believe they're even selling those seats, and I selected "best possible seats" when searching for tickets. Great job ticketmaster.

I have attended several Portland Timbers games and as always, this one didn't fail to disappoint. I sat in the General Admission section and cheered and chanted and danced with everyone else and overall had a fantastic time.

    A Must Have Experience :^)

    by MamaDonna21 on 3/6/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

I bought the tickets for my 2 grandsons and 2 of their friends. It was a first MLS experience for 2-14 year old and 2-15 year old boys. They all had very good things to say about the game and the crowd. And they asked when I could get tickets for them again. They all play either baseball, football, wrestle, or box. And they were talking about how they had played soccer when they were little. They asked when I could get tickets for them again. They were hooked!!

It was my birthday and this was a fantastic way to celebrate it!! The crowd in the general admissions section is incredible!! The quality of seats doesn't matter because you should anticipate on standing for the whole game anyways. If your only going to buy one piece of Timbers gear I would recommend a scarf so you can participate in the twirling of them with everyone else! :)

    On your feet.

by VicCrowe on 2/29/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Better ball control than last year, but lacks organization in the offensive end. Love the atmosphere of the Timber Army north end but the rest of the the stadium needs to stand up more. Bring back cheap beer nights.

The Timbers Army is worth the price of admission

by PaulKr on 2/29/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

I love going to Timbers games. For my money, I think the best ticket is in general admission, because you are right in the thick of the Timbers Army. I like to get there early enough to sit in the first few rows of the 200 section right above the Army. You will stand the whole game, but that's what football is all about. The Army sings and cheers almost non-stop from a half hour or more before game time through the entire game, and stays to congratulate the players afterwards, win or lose! The down side to general admission is that you have to arrive about 45 minutes to an hour before game time to assure a decent seat. But, put your stuff down on your seat, go get some beer and food, and enjoy the pre-game atmosphere! I have sat in other sections, and though the fans cheer some, it is boring compared to being behind the army.
