About

Synopsis

Perfect Crime is a funny, sexy thriller about three psychiatrists, a detective, a crazy patient and at least one dead body. A man is murdered -- maybe. Did his wife kill him? The detective investigating the case thinks so - until he starts to fall in love with her and the husband mysteriously reappears.

The New York Times calls Perfect Crime "an urban legend... a crackling thriller." The New Yorker calls it "a cunning little whodunit" and UPI says "If Harold Pinter, Tennessee Williams and Agatha Christie ever sat around a bar one night and said 'Let's write a murder mystery,' they might have come up with Perfect Crime."

"Perfect Crime is something of a phenomenon," says Fox Five News. Now in its 24th year, Perfect Crime  "may well outdistance The Mousetrap" says WNEW. What is the perfect crime? Come and see for yourself!

Perfect Crime is the longest running play on or Off-Broadway - ever. Its star, Catherine Russell, is known as the "Cal Ripkin of Broadway" because she has missed only four performances in over 22 years - all for her siblings'  weddings.

    Perfect Crime is perfectly engaging

Low key production — great storyline — my daughter loved it

    Horrendous

by Fifi on 3/7/23The Theater Center - New York

Honestly I have no idea how this could have possibly be running for 35 years. The plot has so many holes in it, they give you a sheet at the end to explain it. Some of the acting is laughable. It was so bad it was almost funny. Spend your time and money elsewhere, like seriously.

    Terrible, terrible experience.

by Mark on 2/28/23The Theater Center - New York

It started late. It was clearly always a poor play but everything is tired, the cast, the venue and the script can’t always have been this bad. The lead actor ran through her lines at times like she wanted it to finish early also. There was no chemistry, or believable interaction between the cast. I did question if it was me but my suspicions were confirmed at the end when a double sided crib sheet was given out to everyone in order that holes in the play were explained. Avoid at all costs. I wish I’d given the cash away instead and saved hours of my life.

    Absolutely loved it!

by Lena on 2/15/23The Theater Center - New York

We went to the Perfect Crime for my husband's birthday and both absolutely loved it! The acting was superb and the cast really knows their characters. You are completely in the story from the first second. We enjoy all the CSI and Law & Order type of shows, but as a result tend to guess the plot in the first 5 minutes. Not here! The story was evolving up to the last moment, kept us interested and in suspense. It wasn't too hard to follow, but you did have to pay attention. We're glad we did not read the spoilers ahead of time, but it was nice being able to go through everything and confirm we didn't miss any detail

    Truly Awful

by S. B. on 2/10/23The Theater Center - New York

Terrible from start to finish. Poor acting and the fact that you were given a plot sheet on the way out after the performance said a lot! Choose something else to go and see if you’re visiting NYC

    Loved it!

by Anne on 2/8/23The Theater Center - New York

I’m always looking to see something that’s not super expensive so when I read about this, we went. I reallly enjoyed it and tht the acting was SUPERPB! It’s Uber well written and even sometimes funny. We are new Yorkers and spoiled with viewing all the cultural bests. I recommend it. The ONLY thing I wd have like to know (apart the clues) was the EXACT ENTRANCE to the theater so I wdnt have to go round and round.

    Horrible!

by Ugh It’s Me on 2/1/23The Theater Center - New York

The star speaks 97% of the time with her eyes closed. Only at my wife’s insistence kept me past the intermission. She thought the shoe stunk as well. Please, do not waste your time…would give it a zero star.

    Acting at its Best

by Magoo on 1/30/23The Theater Center - New York

Perfect Crime is a standard, a classic and an intriguing rollercoaster of emotions. The plot is unpredictable and the acting intimate, as it should be in a small, cozy and charming theater. No matter if your seats are on the last row, you will be close to the stage and will be seeing two plays: the one written for the stage and the miracle of acting that evolves in front of your eyes. An excellent quartett delivers the story with tension and passion. It is an experience not to be missed.

    disappointed

by Disappointed on 1/30/23The Theater Center - New York

play is so confusing and action is so rushed that staff hands out single-spaced, double-sided explanation of the plot as patrons leave the theater. i would not reccomend.

    The show needs to retire

by Diesel & Wilson’s mom on 1/26/23The Theater Center - New York

This was a gift to for my daughter, she picked out what to see. She loves murder mysteries. She thought that since the play had been running so long the show must be good. Well, it wouldn’t be running so long if the lead wasn’t footing the bill and making it happen. I appreciate her hard work to do that however, it is time to retire or find something else to do. There were barely 20 people in the audience. We had to be prompted at the end by one of the actors to stand to applaud her. All the other shows I’ve been to, it was natural to stand. She didn’t deserve a standing applause. Sorry to sound so harsh but it is time for the show to end. Only giving one star because there were no negative stars and I had to submit something.

    So bad. Do something else

    by J. P. on 1/8/23

We left at intermission. The play was virtually unintelligible. The acting was really bad considering the lead has 13000 performances in the role. The perfect crime in the title is actually that they have been scamming tourists & local audiences off the back of “longest running show” headlines, which would seem to guarantee some value in checking it out…. There isn’t. You’ll spend $120-$150 for a couple tickets and feel like you were stolen from. How it’s lasted for 30+ yrs is a crime we may never solve.

    Not as advertised

by Ellen on 1/4/23The Theater Center - New York

While the acting was excellent, the play was terrible. The description said it was a funny, romantic mystery. It was neither funny nor romantic plus it was extremely confusing and even somewhat boring. Very disappointing

    Not worth it

by Theatre love on 1/4/23The Theater Center - New York

I really wanted to like this since it has been on broadway for so long. However, the acting demonstrated that it has been on broadway for too long. The main actor seemed bored. Her lines were rote and rushed with zero emotion during the entire play. The "love" interest was awkward and not at all believable. Very disappointed.

    Nope

by Clif on 11/2/22The Theater Center - New York

Venue tricky to get into. Venue not the best, um, maintained. I am so very surprised it has lasted as long as it had. There is no mystery. They explain basically everything during the play. The life situations the characters find themselves in make no sense. A lot of gibberish and nonsensical noise. I am only glad to have seen it to advise people not to.

    Intimate and interesting

by Trvlwstyl on 11/1/22The Theater Center - New York

We went to a matinee and had a not crowded theater moment to enjoy an intimate play setting. The story was compelling and had plenty of plot twists. We also received a written answer key at the end that had us discussing the earlier plot moments. It kept the play alive after the fact.

    Kind of a rip-off

by N/A on 10/26/22The Theater Center - New York

It was a waste of time and money. We were about 10 in a somewhat small room. The play didn't make much sense and I definitely regret spending time and money to watch it. None of the characters were likeable and it felt like they were speeding through it.

    Beyond expectations

by Dave B on 10/13/22The Theater Center - New York

This was the second time my wife and I have been to the Jerry Orbach theatre and this performance did not disappoint. We were able to follow the premise the majority of it and got a little lost at the end. The cheat sheet at the bed was fantastic to tie up all the loose ends…

    Enjoyable afternoon...

by MarciBoCu on 9/22/22The Theater Center - New York

The play started out slowly - & a bit confusing due to lots of exposition. The actors, however, won us over within minutes. The husband - aka Philip - did a great job of tossing out an English accent along with a few cryptic plot points. The leading lady was a ball of fire - a bit nutty & that added to her charm. Lionel was not only a hoot, but maybe the best actor in the cast. The law (as he was listed in the program) was a tall drink of water. He became more appealing each time he fell a little more in love. A group of folks who were clearly having fun & that conveyed an entertaining couple of hours for the audience. Thank you for a terrific experience!

This is BY FAR the best show!

by Avy on 8/30/22The Theater Center - New York

The acting is the best quality. It feels almost as if you’re in the apartment next door overhearing these complex scenes. Like, you’re eavesdropping on a conversation and just getting bits of it… and maybe it’s something sinister or maybe it’s nothing. The scenes feel so natural. I have actually taken 3 different friends to see it with me, because they had never heard of it. They also have gone on and on how it was “so much better” than some of the “must-see” (cough, cough… Wicked). This is perfect for a chill afternoon or evening. It kind of gives me Only Murders in the Building vibes. See it!
