About

Synopsis

Perfect Crime is a funny, sexy thriller about three psychiatrists, a detective, a crazy patient and at least one dead body. A man is murdered -- maybe. Did his wife kill him? The detective investigating the case thinks so - until he starts to fall in love with her and the husband mysteriously reappears.

The New York Times calls Perfect Crime "an urban legend... a crackling thriller." The New Yorker calls it "a cunning little whodunit" and UPI says "If Harold Pinter, Tennessee Williams and Agatha Christie ever sat around a bar one night and said 'Let's write a murder mystery,' they might have come up with Perfect Crime."

"Perfect Crime is something of a phenomenon," says Fox Five News. Now in its 24th year, Perfect Crime  "may well outdistance The Mousetrap" says WNEW. What is the perfect crime? Come and see for yourself!

Perfect Crime is the longest running play on or Off-Broadway - ever. Its star, Catherine Russell, is known as the "Cal Ripkin of Broadway" because she has missed only four performances in over 22 years - all for her siblings'  weddings.

    Set the bar too high

by K. J. on 9/6/21The Theater Center - New York

If you read the reviews, this play is for fans of Law & Order, CSI, and Gone Girl. I went in with grossly inflated expectations and left disappointed. Kudos for being the longest running play in NYC history, but this play was just not for me. I do want to mention that the staff working that night was wonderfully friendly

A Good Night at the Theater

by Brian R on 9/6/21The Theater Center - New York

I had a thoroughly enjoyable time at the show. It moves fast and one must pay close attention to every detail. Those who are not particularly bright or have short attention spans will have difficulty keeping up and will probably not enjoy it. The script is clever. The acting is good, though line delivery is a bit fast at times, probably due to the extended amount of time the actors have been in their roles. I recommend the show for intellectual people who are willing to pay close attention through the entire show.

    Great opportunity to support theatre

by JR on 8/9/21The Theater Center - New York

With broadway closed we decided to give this show a try and we are glad we did! It is fast paced, as this style of show often is, and at times you could tell the actors have done this show a lot with the speed at which they delivered their lines (again, part of this genre but maybe a bit too much so on the night we saw the show). Having said that, it is an interesting show with a great whodunnit plot line and plenty to keep you entertained with some good laughs too. We followed the plot but not everyone there did, and there are lots of little details to pick up on so I still liked reading their hand out about the plot afterwards for little things I'd missed. It is amazing to me that the lead has been doing this show for so many years. It makes for a good night out and an entertaining show but do go in with the expectation that isnt a large scale broadway production.

    A struggling 4 !!

by M. A. on 2/25/20The Theater Center - New York

My girlfriend & myself did not enjoy the play that much.It was not easy to follow. They had their moments but did not grasp our attention We expected that at the end they would have had a question & answer moment & introduction of the cast but instead outside the room for anyone to take was the answer key sheet that most people were not aware it was available.. I would not recommend anyone to spend their money.. it’s not worth it.

    Disappointed

by Chloe on 11/16/19The Theater Center - New York

Based on the ads I really expected a murder mystery but was disappointed. There was no twist. The only mystery for me was "Why is this play still in production". I understand Catherine Russell, the lead actress, has been performing the same role for over 25 years. I really think it's time for her to move on. Her performance was tired and the overall dialogue was unbelievable. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before I bought these tickets. Overpaid and wasted time.

Do you know how good theater makes one suspend disbelief?

by M. W. on 11/7/19The Theater Center - New York

The only thing I was able to suspend for this show was my gag reflex. It's not good. The plot is hard to follow. The acting is uninspired. It's just not a good evening of theater. The lead actress is lauded for only missing 4 performances in 30 years, but what does that mean? Sure, she's the Cal Ripken of NYC theater, but she phones in the performance. Attending this show was a mistake, and not worth the time and expense.

    Slow burn, ultimately enjoyable

    by Eric T on 11/1/19

If you're looking for an alternative theater experience in Times Square, "Perfect Crime" is the ticket! Everything about the show feels dated, from the set, to the sound, and even the cast, many of whom have been performing the same show for decades. Seriously, the lead is in the Guinness Book of Records for most consecutive performances -- for 30 years! The hilarious thing is that the headshots are from the original airing in 1987. I could believe the romance between two 30-year-olds. But two actors pushing 60? That said, the acting is elevated from lots of off-broadway stuff, and it is a carefully-plotted murder mystery, if a bit too confusing until the very end. We were still asking ourselves questions out loud hours after the performance ended. I'm glad I went, would have preferred to pay about 1/2 what I did.

    extremely disappointed

by Cee on 10/28/19The Theater Center - New York

The main character raced through her lines as if she were in a hurry to be somewhere. Since it was a mystery and the plot should have developed for the audience, it was very difficult to "buy in" to the story. Further, as I understand, it was suppose to be funny at times. The audience only laughed once - again, the lines were said so quickly that one could not absorb the story. The actress was almost tripping over the lines of her fellow actors. Frankly, we feel we were cheated and experienced the first ever disappointment in a Broadway or off-Broadway play in NY. A complete waste of money. Several audience members left at intermission.

The Perfect Crime was less than perfect

by Underwhelmed on 10/28/19The Theater Center - New York

I loved the intimacy of the tiny little theater setting. The acting was decent, but the play itself left much to be desired, the script was so sketchy that I was lost after the first act. It wasn't until the end of the play that all the pieces fell into place. All, that is except for the ridiculous--no chemistry at all--"love" between the inspector and the woman...all together I felt like I wasted $60--have seen better high school drama for free.

    We Loved it!

by B. W. on 10/26/19The Theater Center - New York

We read all of the bad reviews, and knew we would love it! My sister, and I went knowing it would be in a small theatre that most people don’t seem to care for.. but we knew we would have a great time! We loved the play, the actors! We were leaving a little late, and ran into the star of the play, Catherine Russell. She treated us like stars! We will be back next year!!
