About

Synopsis

Perfect Crime is a funny, sexy thriller about three psychiatrists, a detective, a crazy patient and at least one dead body. A man is murdered -- maybe. Did his wife kill him? The detective investigating the case thinks so - until he starts to fall in love with her and the husband mysteriously reappears.

The New York Times calls Perfect Crime "an urban legend... a crackling thriller." The New Yorker calls it "a cunning little whodunit" and UPI says "If Harold Pinter, Tennessee Williams and Agatha Christie ever sat around a bar one night and said 'Let's write a murder mystery,' they might have come up with Perfect Crime."

"Perfect Crime is something of a phenomenon," says Fox Five News. Now in its 24th year, Perfect Crime  "may well outdistance The Mousetrap" says WNEW. What is the perfect crime? Come and see for yourself!

Awards

Perfect Crime is the longest running play on or Off-Broadway - ever. Its star, Catherine Russell, is known as the "Cal Ripkin of Broadway" because she has missed only four performances in over 22 years - all for her siblings'  weddings.

    Confusing

by Lucy on 12/31/23The Theater Center - New York

The venue was not good. The seating was just barely sloped so it was difficult to see past the heads in front of us. Couldn't see the actors when they were sitting down. The story, where do I start. The scenes were disjointed and hard to follow. Leaving the theatre, we were handed a two-page hard-to-read summary of each scene, when each took place (present day or in past), characters' motives... a lot like an Agatha Christie film. I was glad for explanations but that shows you how many others must have commented similarly so that there was a need (obligation) to attendees to provide the long summation upon exit. We could tell the actors were talented but the time, effort, and money we put into attending was so not worth it.

    Left during intermission!

by Kay on 12/21/23The Theater Center - New York

Honestly, I bought tickets without reading the reviews.. and wow next time I’ll definitely be reading reviews before buying tickets to shows. I ended up leaving during intermission, the acting was all over the place and It didn’t make any sense what so ever. Maybe towards the end of the show things would of came together but I honestly couldn’t not spend anymore of my time while on vacation watching the show.

    Fun and Interesting

by Enjoyable to see an off Broadway play on 12/8/23The Theater Center - New York

This was very different than going to a large Broadway show. The theater is small and intimate. The play itself is interesting to try to figure out who did it. It was fun and entertaining.

    Time to Close this Show

by Retire on 10/20/23The Theater Center - New York

The house staff was charming, but that is the only good thing about the evening. It started sitting in a large theater with an audience of only 13 people. The sound mix was off and it was easy to miss the dialogue. The lead actress seemed annoyed to be there, and rushed through her lines, reading them more than acting. Her love interest was miscast, towering over her and about 30 years her junior. They handed out a sheet of explanations as you exited, in case you didn't understand the plot. The biggest mystery of the evening is how has it run so long?

    Disappointed

by Ig on 10/15/23The Theater Center - New York

Not the best cast . The main actress did not look good in stage , was just saying worlds , not much acting . The main issue is the story itself , no connection to follow the plot. At the end of the play they give you a chewy sheet who killed who , you had to read after the play to really understand what the reck this actually was .

    Not what I was expecting

by NYCFan on 9/28/23The Theater Center - New York

Theater was extremely tired - dirty and worn seats. No acoustics fir the play, so hard to hear. Main actress’s performance seemed rote. A bit hard to follow in the beginning and it moves fast without much explanation. Overall, just ok.

    oh dear

by Nina on 9/13/23The Theater Center - New York

The play was surprisingly disappointing. The actors talked too quickly like they were rushing through, phoning it in. The inspector was the exception. We were all shaking our heads at intermission ready to leave. One of our party had a hunch about the plot, so we stayed. We didn't understand the plot until the end, when the ushers passed out an explanation. Some audience members were rudely talking throughout. Some actors seemed to have a sense of humor about the performance as they took their bows. Fun to dish about afterwards though.

total waste of time and money

by phil on 9/10/23The Theater Center - New York

The play seemed very contrived, and the acting was terrible. There were only about 10 people in the audience. This may have been the worst theatrical performance I have ever seen.

    Theater at its best.

    by Loveoftheater on 7/5/23

A beautiful afternoon of old-fashioned theater. A nice intimate atmosphere, and I was able to see and hear without difficulty. The acting was superb, and the set was put together nicely. The plot kept me alert, intrigued and involved, I really felt like this was great dramatic theater.

    Perfect Crime was Excellent

by Tom on 5/31/23The Theater Center - New York

Perfect Crime was such a great play. No wonder it has been the longest running play. From the start it has you on the edge of your seat. Even as you leave the theatre they give you a sheet with even more insight to what you just witnessed. Some things you would not have realized without this helpful piece of information. Days later I am still thinking of what happened and longing to see a repeat of this story. I will be going again.

    Perfect Crime

by Isabel on 5/30/23The Theater Center - New York

My friend and I decided to attend Perfect Crime when looking for something to do on a Saturday night. We came across this and were intrigued, particularly by the lead's 35-year tenure in the project. When leaving, we were a tad conflicted about how we felt about the show overall. The acting was wonderful and the set was cozy. However, we definitely were left with many questions. In fact, the production itself knew that we had questions, as we were promptly presented with a double-sided piece of paper with an FAQ list. This did indeed confirm our theories and answer our remaining questions, but it does certainly say something about the show itself. Would a truly well-written show leave us with so many questions that it requires an FAQ sheet? Overall, we do not regret our attendance and would give it about a 5-6/10.

    Great acting

by LAV on 5/30/23The Theater Center - New York

We purchased tickets for this play the day before the performance. We wanted to see something on board way at a reasonable price and it was the last minute decision. The show was very interesting and very well acted I loved the cheat sheet they gave us at the end which made us ask ourselves many questions about the play.

    Fast-moving whodunnit mystery

by Bill & Chandra on 4/4/23The Theater Center - New York

Loved it. Fun, well written and well acted. Stay to AFTER the end when you get the answer key, to discover more twists and turns to not one but four mysteries, each of them a Perfect Crime!

    Hard to follow

by Patrick on 3/29/23The Theater Center - New York

The actors were fine but they speak so quickly that it is very difficult to follow. The theater was old and not very appealing. Low budget not worth the money spent.

What “off Broadway” is all about

by Aaron on 3/23/23The Theater Center - New York

Perfect Crime is in a cozy venue, it’s a fun story that keeps you guessing, the acting is well done by veteran performers, and just a really good time. It’s not not the big show on Broadway. This is like your actor and actress friends putting on an entertaining play for you in their living room.
