Outside Lands - Always a Great Experience

by WestGhent on 8/17/10Golden Gate Park Outside Lands Festival - San Francisco

I have been going to the Outside Lands Music Festival since it began three years ago. I travel from Virginia to visit a good friend and enjoy the great music, food and art the festival brings. This year, my favorites were: The Pimps of Joytime (good funk), Gogol Bordello (a band with members form around the globe), Bassnectar, Rebirth Brass Band, Syd Gris, Wolfmother, Beats Antique (Middle Eastern hip-hop), Nneka, Janelle Monae (a hint of a time from the past and great entertainer), Chromeo (the whole crowd was dancing), Nas & Damian Marley (this definitely drew the largest crowd of the weekend - you could not see where the crowd stopped), The Budos Band (lots of horns and a funky bass player) and Empire of the Sun (dance off!).

    outsidelands 2010

by wethehappyfew on 8/17/10Golden Gate Park Outside Lands Festival - San Francisco

Amazing live shows, delicious food, great crowd, and good times. This festival gave me more ups than downs: the strokes, bassnectar, empire of the sun, temper trap were among the best shows, but PHOENIX defenitely took this one home, perfect daylight hour, perfect weather, perfect musicians, perfect performance, it was EPIC!

The Strokes and Phoenix in a class of their own!

by philmh on 8/17/10Golden Gate Park Outside Lands Festival - San Francisco

The title says it. The Strokes and Phoenix were unbelievable. There were some other good performances but nothing life-changing. Price of food over the top!

    Another Great OSL Festival

by Tfizzle on 8/17/10Golden Gate Park Outside Lands Festival - San Francisco

Rankings for 2010 1. KOL--Yes, they are no longer Indie Darlings, but this performance was big-festival rock at its finest. They broke away from the hits, playing several new tracks that left the average top 40 fan motionless and confused. As an oldschool fan, I absolutely loved it. They sounded great, their setlist was great, and they even threw the 2 radio singles into the mix to keep the masses happy. 2. Strokes--First time I've seen them live, they blew me away! I own their albums, and never really got into their recorded material. I found a whole new appreciation for their music after hearing them live. Casablancas has an amazing voice and the band played crisp, tight songs behind him. They basically stole the festival in my opinion. 3. MMJ--This was my marquee band to see, and they put on a tremendous show, but unfortunately it felt as if they were dwarfed by the enormous Land's End stage (Main Stage). If they would have played the same stage and time as the Strokes, this may have been the best act of the weekend--the more intimate Twin Peaks stage seems to suit them better. Nevertheless, Jim James gave me everything I could have asked for on stage: passion, intensity, rocker wailing on the guitar and a great set list. The Dead Heads waiting for Further seemed too stoned to appreciate what they were witnessing. 4. Wolfmother--First time I've seen them live--they brought it. Musically, they are not innovative, but they rocked hard and brought great energy. Best Mosh Pit scene. True Rock Pros. I hope that they keep this band together long enough to develop. 5. Further--I'm not a dead head, but I respect the history and the significance of this band in GG Park. The music was great too. Honorable Mention: Phoenix, Edward Sharpe, Pretty Lights Biggest Festival Scheduling Mistake: Scheduling the Whigs at noon on Panhandle Stage (side stage). They have earned a better time slot and stage by now. Their jams were wasted on a crowd that was just warming up to the festival and by the time the crowd got warm, it was over. This should have been a Twin Peaks act in the middle of the day. Woulda Coulda Shoulda: Split Nas and Marley. I like them both, but Nas is too intense for Ragae, and Marley is too chill for Nas hip hop. I know they were a package deal, but would've been better to see them each seperately. Slightly Disappointed: Slightly Stoopid was so-so in what I expected would be a perfect setup for them: a stoned audience in the Bay Area with sunny weather. One That Got Away... Chromeo. I missed it, but wish I could've seen this one.

It gets cold at night and it's crowded, lots of walking, but it's a really good time. Great food, amazing bands, beautiful scenery.

Fun day, wish I could have had more Janelle Monae!

by FisherRubick on 8/16/10Golden Gate Park Outside Lands Festival - San Francisco

I love Outside Lands. It's a mellow, environmental, musical and artistic jumble of good stuff. I primarily focused on the music and really liked Janelle Monae, but was disappointed she only got to play for 1/2 an hour. Phoenix was great live. Their drummer was killing it. Nas & Damien Marley adid not disappoint the huge crowd that packed in to see them. Just good stuff. I'm disappointed I couldn't see everyone because I'm sure I missed some good acts. Looking forward to next year!

Despite the cloudy skies and chilly winds, nothing could deter a swarm of food, wine, and of course, music fans from Outside Lands at the beautiful Golden Gate Park. Full of energetic, eclectic people, along with a killer line-up, Outside Lands exceeded my personal expectations. Every single band was so pleased to be preforming, and their good vibes seemed to sweep the entire audience. Sunday's headliners, Kings of Leon, put on a great show, as did Pheonix, Al Green, The Temper Trap and many others. Arms flailing and vocal chords strained to maximum capacity, fans packed awkwardly together just to get a glimpse of their favorite bands. All in all, Outside Lands was a definite success. Don't miss it next year, or ever.
