About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

  • So groovy, so fun!

I have been really digging MH since discovering him on Spotify. I was hopeful, but not certain that the show would live up to expectations, particularly since MH plays a lot of the instruments on his albums. WOW!! The show was SUCH A BLAST! MH has such an engaging, groovy, and entertaining stage presence…the musicians were really grooving too…and the fans had a super positive, fun vibe. I’ll definitely see him again if I have the opportunity!!

Great show, crowded venue with no seats anywhere but the balcony wall.

  • The Mayer Delivers at the Bellwether

by AA on 2/19/24The Bellwether - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Mayer is incredible at the live shows. The backup singing on physical touch was so good! Played songs from all his LPs as well, keeping those long term fans satisfied The music was pretty crisp even to the balcony. Wish the set was longer. But it was still a smooth night as always.

  • Mayer Hawthorne at the Bellwether.

by Nickt. on 2/19/24The Bellwether - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

Acoustics were terrible, could only hear the bass. Not sure if was venue or his mixing desk but we walked out. If you didn’t know every word he was singing you couldn’t hear him or make out the lyrics. Shame as the little of his music I know I like, and was hoping to experience more but sadly it was a pretty poor experience. If it’s the acoustics at the Bellwether then the sound desk should have known and done a better job. Either way if I was him I’d fire them.

  • Awesome Show

Amazing show last night at the Bellwether in Los Angeles. His voice was smooth and gave a great performance but his all lady band was epic. Awesome vibes.

  • A mix

by David on 2/13/24Neptune Theatre - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

The music was good but the sound quality was bad, especially the lead singer microphone. We were in the balcony. Then a drunken brawl occurred next to us, 4-5 guys. Had to leave before encore.

Mayer sure knows how to put on a show and get the crowd involved. Amazing experience I wish he would tour more often especially to Vancouver!

  • Mayer Hawthorne was fabulous during his live show!

by CW on 1/30/24The Underground - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have been MH fans since he appeared on Darryls House years ago. We were so impressed with his smooth funky sound and promised ourselves if he ever went on tour, we would be there no matter what. MH did not disappoint...sang all his hits and played them in their entirety. He sounded amazing and band was great as well. The only thing which were not happy about is that the conveet was supposed to begin at 8pm and did not start until 9:15pm. As this venue is standing room only, it was not appreciated for the length of time we had to wait. Not sure why as no one made any announcements and there was a DJ pre MH.

  • Awesome

Mayer puts on such a fun upbeat show. So fun to watch and listen too. We did the meet and greet and we do every time and it’s worth it. Mayer is very pleasurable and fun to chat with. He wouldn’t sing my request but he’s limited to time. “Just joking with you Mayer if you read this” We will definitely do it again. M&P from Charlotte.
