About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

    Good vibes all around!

by Wendy on 1/29/24The Masquerade - Hell - Atlanta

Mayer is such a fun entertainer! His voice is like butter, his music is smooth and so fun to dance to. I smiled the whole time! Great sound system at the Masquerade too!

    Mayer was great, but….

by pp on 1/29/24The Masquerade - Hell - Atlanta

Mayer Hawthorne was great, but he didn’t come on until over 2 hours after start of opening act. Vinyl Club (records DJ was good in the beginning but quickly deteriorated to base heavy monotonous rhythms), and was on way too long. MH show was only about an hour, compared to 2 hour opening act. Sound system was too loud for size of venue.

    Outstanding

by Nix on 1/29/24The Masquerade - Hell - Atlanta

Mayer Hawthorne’s concert at The Masquerade was an amazing experience! His vocals were on point and the band was awesome. My only complaint is I wanted to hear Wineglass Woman lol. I loved the show tho. I’m thinking about catching him again in another city.

    Great concert, great venue!

by AmyTeeKay on 1/29/24The Masquerade - Hell - Atlanta

LOVED the show! It’s my second time seeing Mayer Hawthorne live and he did not disappoint! If I had a complaint, it’d be wishing the show was longer! (I don’t mean that it was inadequate, just that I like his music that much.) The staff at the Hell stage were great - courteous, respectful, but kept everything running smoothly. I am glad I paid for VIP because it gave me a front-row view. As an average-height woman, if I hadn’t done that, I’d have gone up to the balcony to make sure I could see everything. Either way, I’ll come back to this venue to see him (or Tuxedo) any time he’s in town!

Great entertainer. Great songs and great musicians.

by Kathy on 1/26/24The Echo Lounge & Music Hall - Dallas

I've seen him in concert before and he seemed a little tired or hoarse, and hard to hear. Great musicians, but bass and drums speakers too high and his speaker was too low, and he was hard to hear. Very late start to show. Great venue in Dallas. I liked balcony seats. I'm a super fan. Been following Mayer for years and have seen him in concert before. I will see him again too. I love how he integrated songs from new album with his older stuff.

    Fantastic show!

by SDBen on 1/22/24The Observatory North Park - San Diego

Great show Mayer!! Great music, great musicians even the ladies with the opening DJ set had some old skool that was really throwing it back. The only challenge is for the venue to be better prepared in the VIP section bar. Missing many components to be fully stocked and provide a VIP cocktail experience. Bartender was hustling and maybe could have used 1 more person to support. I would also suggest wider beer selections, we are in San Diego after all (craft beer capital of the US). We look forward to coming back for the next act!

Mayer Hawthorne was great and sounded even better live! He and his band are such a talented and fun group to watch, we danced the entire night.

Not very energetic. Ended very quickly

by Timmy on 1/22/24The Observatory North Park - San Diego

Mayer Hawthorne isn’t my favorite musician, but I enjoy it. On a Friday evening, he had one no-name warmup, Mayer Hawthorne came on at 9:20 and ended at 10:30. Such a short set and early night, especially for a Friday. I was left wanting.

    Show started too late

by Tara on 1/21/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

I really enjoyed seeing Mayer Hawthorn. He is one of my favorite artist. I like The Observatory. The sound is good and we enjoyed having reserved bar stools in the balcony. My beef is that the show did not start until two hrs and fifteen minutes after the doors open. There was no opening act just a DJ which was good. But 2 hrs and fifteen minutes is a bit much.

Hawthorne Rides Again and Puts on an Amazing Show!

by Tcdeco on 1/20/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

Mayer Hawthorne always put on a fun show, and his concert at the OC Observatory was no exception. He played a well thought out selection from the new album (5 tracks) as well as some great deep tracks I've not heard him do live before as well as the hits. He was in superb voice, charming personality and engaged the audience throughout. Of course, everyone is going to have a favorite that he didn't play. I could program an entire show of personal picks not included -- his catalogue is that deep! If he's coming to your town, go!

    Very confusing

by Yolanda on 2/17/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

Confusing about what size purse you could bring in. So 50% of woman had to take back there purse back to the car. It was not clear that this was a cashless arena. So it a lot longer to get in

    Sticky grounds

by Val on 2/17/22Toyota Arena - Ontario

The music was great!! I really enjoyed all the artists!! The only reason I am not giving a 5 star rating is because the ground was so incredibly sticky!!!! I am not exaggerating one bit!! The couple next to us kept throwing peanut shells on the ground, so that we could lift our feet a little earlier!!

    showtime

by elephant papers on 12/5/21The Wiltern - Los Angeles

my biggest problem here is that the ticketmaster ticket showed 7 P as a start time. that usually means within 20-30 mins. but here there was an unfortunate situation. not just me but many seated around me came at 7 - 7 15 expecting to see a show. but no. the opening act india shawn, with no intro came on at 8 20 for 30 minutes and then Hawthorne at 9 15. another half hour wait and the band was already set up. Tell the truth on the ticket. not to get the audience in early to spend more money on concessions and drinks, bad.

    Solid performance

by Rubberducklh on 12/5/21The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The show was very fun, and the crowd was there to have a good time. His music was as expected - upbeat and well-constructed. However, the sound wasn't mixed very well. From the mezzanine, his vocals were hard to hear over the crowd and the music. This wasn't so much the case with his opening act, India Shawn. Speaking of India Shawn, she had two surprise guests that made the night super special: 6lack, and Anderson .Paak. Just about lost my mind seeing these two guest appearances. Overall, it was a really fun night.

    Disappointed

by Uggh on 12/5/21The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The bass was fuzzy and overwhelming. The playlist of too many new songs is not what I wanted to hear.

    Great Concert

by Monica on 12/5/21The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Small venue great customer service. They should of mention small VIP tables available. Unless i missed it when purchasing the tickets. Luckily when we got there we asked and were able to purchase, but for the full price, they should of deducted what was already paid for the regular tickets or given us a discount. Drinks over priced.
