MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

    Master musicians, iffy sound system

by Runepoet on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

MK and his band were great as always. My only complaint is that the quality of the sound was quite variable - e.g. at times the horns’ volume was so disproportionately loud it was almost painful. Sometimes MK’s vocals were nearly lost in the mix. Other times it was all really good.

    Knopfler in Phoenix

by Deadchief on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

It was awesome. I had just seen him at Red Rocks ten days prior and found the shows similar and excellent. Will go next time he is around.

    Missed Best Songs

by Philstar on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Great show, except for the song list - They didn't play Brother in Arms or Sultans of Swing which are two of the best songs.

    Long live Mark Knopfler!

    by D. T. on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Mark Knopfler put on a fantastic show. His band was fabulous as well. I loved his new music and the stories he told about where the songs came from. The intro for and "Money For Nothing" encore had a new and fresh sound although they have probably played "Money For Nothing" a billion times. Carry on Mark...love your music!

    Knopfler at Comerica (Phoenix)

    by L.C. on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Can't find a better lead guitarist and band combo. Great musicianship. Only issue is with the Comerica Theater sound mix. This is the third concert I've been to at that venue in a year and the voice projection is always muffled. Hard to hear the singers and make out the lyrics and that applies to country and rock performers. Saw the Stones at State Farm Arena and Jagger's singing was crystal clear.

    A little disappointed

by Egan on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

I am a big fan Mark Knoffler and his band are incredible musicians and they were great musically However I and others were a bit disappointed as they spent more time jamming and didn’t play enough of many songs people want to hear in concert They could do both and extend the concert another hour

Excellent show - 5 stars. Poor access to building - 2 stars

    by m. R. on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

You need more access to enter the venue. Especially in a violent country like this one where all people must be screened.

    BD mixing

by Maui on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Mark and his band are truly gifted professionals. Regrettably, the sound mixing was ham handed and drowned out much of the nuanced talent. Relying on volume and boomba boom a bass, many times the sensitive guitar was simply boomed our.

    Mark Knopfler

    by M. m. on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

I have been to over 100 concerts and can say that the musicans talent level at this event was the best i have encountered. Mark was absolutely wonderful and he has managed to assemble a group of band members that rival his talents and allows his writing and composing skills to come to the forefront.

Really lovely show with Mark Knopler and band

by sharon on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Nice selection of new material with older songs. Solid talent in the band, really talented group of musicians. Loved the Dire Straits hit in the first encore, but was really thrilled to get the Closing Titles cut from Local Hero for the second encore.

    Gifted musicians, great sound

by Mj on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

I like Mark's style of music, so I'm a little biased. It was fantastic, eleven people on stage all in perfect time. Super listening experience, I could here every instrument as it was played. The first couple of songs Mark's guitar was too much, but the sound crew got it right. When you can hear the Uillean bagpipes along with the lead guitar and percussion, that's balanced sound. What a great night hearing so many gifted musicians playing and enjoying themselves. Mark can still make great music, and the old Dodge Theater is a great place to hear it.

    He still has it

by Don Steffano on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

At the young age of 70 #MarkKnopfler had the audacity to start the concert without any opening act, thus making the usually late guys look like fools. He opened his act with Why Aye Man and in the next 5 seconds everybody was standing up dancing and cheering. The rest is history.

    Horrible show

by ELO on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Worst concert I ever attended, and let me tell you that I go to every show I can. Venue and band are ok but I went there expecting to hear Dire Straits hits. I know that it's Mark Knopfler but I have seen Colin Hay and Roger Hodgson playing Men at Work and Supertramp hits. I drove from Albuquerque just to see the show and I even bought a concert t-shirt before the show. At the end I wish I could return it. He only played Money for Nothing of all the hits, so I expended a lot of money in gas, hotel, tickets, food to hear ONE SONG !!!! I saw a lot of people leaving the venue before the end of the show. Applause to these people that left without any complaints or yelling but I think they were like me, disappointed, because some of them left around half of the show.

    Fabulous performance

by Fan Knee on 9/24/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

The venue was very accomodating of a need for ADA seating change. The band started right on time . Mr. Knopfler was noticeably more reflective and sedate in his performance but his style and voice remain constant, smooth as fine whiskey. His back up band of 10 has a wide range of talent and was very tight. He played old favorites, Raceway at Nazareth, and brand new tunes, Matchstick Man. He confided that he contemplated retirement and it was met with resounding disapproval from the audience. The retirement struggle must have resonated with the predominant age group of 60 year olds. My husband and I loved every aspect of our experience. Mark Knopfler still Rocks!

Mark Knopfler never disappoints and his band of merry men are the stars of his galaxy. The stage was humming with talent. I only wish there was a live album to download & keep with our collection. Love Love Love
