Lyle Lovett in Concert
A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.
Great entertainment! Music was exceptional and Lyle was fully engaged with the audience. Highly recommend his show.
I enjoyed the songs, his engaging conversation, and the phenomenal caliber of the musicians. However, Mr, Lovett's voice was ragged and barely recognizable. Was his voice overextended after this leg of his tour? Hard to know.
Excellent music sound. Been to this venue many times. Loved that this venue brings these great artists to our town in a comfy atmosphere.
Lyle never disappoints and the legendary Leland Skylar was also terrific.
I had never seen Lyle Lovett in concert. I was on Row J, which is close to the stage and he and his acoustic band were incredible. I love the way he talked to the audience throughout the concert and also the way he highlighted the career and friendship he has with the four members of his acoustic group. I like the Magnolia cause it’s not huge, very personal. It’s easy to get to and park. For my first time, seeing Lyle Lovett, I found a great musician and performer, one of a kind.
Great music, big Lyle Lovett fan. Great venue. Great acoustics .
The Magnolia is a great arena - maybe 3,000 seats so eveyone has a good place to view the stage. Lyle Lovett seems to be a regular person - good songs, humor, and lots of discussions/interactions with the four members of the acoustic band. And the fiddle (AKA violin...) player, the pianist, the guitarist and the bass guitarist were great! Well worth the value for an enjoyable evening. IMNVHO - the acoustic band is more fun than the big band because of the interaction among the five musicians and their incredible solos.
One of the best Lovett concerts we have attended. Every musician on stage gave iconic performances, and Lyle's old and new tunes delighted.
I had expected Kotke to play first, as a warmup to Lovett--Lovett being a bigger name than Leo Kotke, but was surprised when they both took the stage at the same time. I was also surprised by the amount of incidental talking they did between numbers, which they alternated. I shouldn't have been so surprised had I looked at the tickets closer: Lyle Lovett and Leo Kotke: In conversation and song. The conversation sounds extemporaneous but there are nuggets in there that trigger the next number, so there has to be some planning involved. I remember Kotke's playing as being more virtuosic; he seemed to play a bunch of medium tempo songs. Maybe it's just age, however, they were still enjoyable. He comes across as avuncular, but slightly reclusive. Lovett's music was equally pleasant, but a little more poignant. I'd say the same for his conversation as well. His singing voice seemed to have a lot of glottal stops in it--something that was not present in his speaking voice. They played for about 2 hours without a break. One encore.
Amazing evening at amazing venue with two iconic entertainers!
