About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    FABULOUS

by Jami on 10/25/23Riverbend Music Center - Cincinnati

The James Taylor concert was rescheduled from June until August. Although it was 950°, it was totally worth it. Great venue, with eased restrictions on water being brought into the facility due to the heat. James Taylor was more amazing than I could’ve ever expected. His vocals are still right on point. He’s incredibly entertaining And charming! Musicians were top-notch as were back up singers. It was nice to see him sing with his son! Took my mom for her birthday, she said it was the best concert she’d ever seen.

    James Taylor is great!!

by Smitty on 9/25/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I love Jones Beach as a venue. JT engaged the audience with comments about upcoming songs. Really liked the way that each song had its own backgrounds on the big screen. All the musicians were great.

    Half and half

by John on 9/10/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

The sound mixing during the first set was lousy - I could not hear James Taylor’s voice, his back-up band overwhelmed it. His second set was outstanding as the sound mixing was appropriately adjusted and James Taylor’s voice and guitar work was finally heard. It demonstrated that James Taylor does not require so many musicians and instruments backing him up. He can entertain an audience virtually on his own thanks to his exceptional abilities as a song writer and guitar picker. He has given the world an outstanding catalogue of music over the years and I am extremely glad I was able to see him perform some of it live at Jones Beach.

    Great Concert!

by Joi on 9/9/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

This concert was wonderful!! James Taylor was great! Still has his voice and is very funny! The only thing I have to complain about is are the seats at Jones Beach. They are very uncomfortable! They need to think about a complete renovation for this great venue!!

Love love love James Taylor! I’ve seen him many times throughout my lifetime but my younger sister had never in her 58 years! I treated her to a weekend away and finished it up with tickets for to his show. He was fantastic I was so impressed with his performance his voice is still amazing after all these years. The band and backup singers were great too. He has one of the best on on stage personalities ever and a great story teller filled with lots of humor.

    James Taylor

by JT on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

James was great when he sang his most popular hits. The first half of the show was ok. James still is a rocker with lots of energy at his age. The musicians were all excellent in their own right. Would like to have heard more of the cuts he had on several of his albums.

    How old is he really?

by Gram on 9/7/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

First concert that I’ve been to in a while. It was worth it! I liked his little stories about various songs that he sang. He sang several songs that I never heard before and omitted songs that I thought he would have sung. He was delayed coming on stage with no heads-up about the delay on one of the hottest days of the summer.
