I had a most enjoyable evening at the Guitar Masters Concert on Saturday evening October 9, 2010 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. This concert of fine acoustic music was entertaining and a true delight for fans of acoustic guitar music! The 2 hour concert seemed to make time stand still, and the busy hectic world outside melt away. The audience was very respectful and at times almost completely silent in appreciation of the display of wonderful talent. The atmosphere was family friendly, in fact there was a family with a young boy of 5, or 6 in age in front of us, that seemed to enjoy the music as much as the elderly couple seated left of us. The fact that the concert was underwritten by the National Endowments for the Arts & the Metropolitan Arts Council, was an indication of the high quality of performance that would be seen & heard.
Peppino D'Agostino played several compositions from his cd, Nine White Kites--a lovely title for a wonderful array of folk based and influenced songs. Some other songs he played were Estate, a Jazz standard written by an Italian composer, the Title song for one of the Olympics of the 60's or 70's, and the title song from the soundtrack of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". Andy McKee played his famous 30 million viewed from Utube, 'Drifting", the Tears for Fears hit , "Everybody wants to Rule the World", and Toto's "Africa" interplayed among his other compositions from the JoyLand cd. Eric Johnson played A tribute to Jerry Reed, Dusty from the Bloom Album, and several new compositions such as "Promised Man" from his soon to be released cd. I will definitely look forward to buying this new cd in November when it comes out.
The three entertainers Peppino D'Agostino, Andy McKee, and Eric Johnson played some of their newer music among some favorites. Each artist played several other guitars and experimented with various techniques for different sounds not usually associated with acoustic guitar. (Percussive tapping etc.) The encore was a wonderful combination of all 3 artists playing a composition from their own repertoire. Eric Johnson played piano as well as guitar. Mr D'Agostino added jazz to the country and folk music he played.
We traveled from the Twin Cities, to see Eric Johnson in particular, but all three entertainers were excellent. I will surely be looking forward to more concerts at the Mayo Civic Center.
