GEORGE BENSON IN CONCERT:

George Benson brings his gifted guitar playing and sonorous voice to every stage he graces, consistently impressing fans at his live performances with his soulful and swinging jazz sound. In concert Benson unleashes a furious flurry of melodic guitar mastery on supercharged renditions of standards like “Take Five”, “On Broadway”, and the perennial favorite “This Masquerade”. He’s also a skilled band leader, hanging back with his infectious smile as he lets the talented members of his top-notch ensemble execute moving, eloquent solos. Ticket buyers can expect a jaw-dropping display of six-string showmanship every time George Benson brings his funky and fluid fretwork on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pittsburgh-born George Benson was a child prodigy who had already cut his first single by the age of ten. He spent the remainder of his adolescence training under organist Jack McDuff before making his debut as a bandleader with the 1964 album The New Boss Guitar of George Benson. He continued to climb the ranks of the jazz world, even appearing on the track “Paraphernalia” from Miles Davis’ 1968 album Miles in the Sky. The virtuosic Benson scored a huge crossover hit in 1976 when he pulled double-duty on vocals and guitar for “This Masquerade”, which took home the Grammy for Record of the Year. With the encouragement of Quincy Jones, Benson explored vocals during the ‘70s and ‘80s, leading to the most commercially successful period of his career. He returned to his instrumental jazz roots at the dawn of the ‘90s and toured with renowned contemporaries like Chet Atkins and Al Jarreau into the new millennium. Ten Grammys and countless breathtaking solos later, George Benson still gives audience members an unparalleled listening experience with his amazing instrumental prowess and undeniable grooves.

    Unfortunate

    by Lee on 7/10/23

There were several issues with this concert experience. First, the way parking was managed was inefficient with both arriving and leaving. As there was only one way in and out, this caused unnecessary traffic jams that could judge been alleviated if other entrances/exits were utilized. Second, the venue at Thunder Valley is in a stand alone building and can be entered using its own entrances, yet the crowd was forced to go through the casino which caused overcrowding and unnecessary confusion. Lastly and most sadly, the featured artist, George Benson, performed for less than an hour, playing maybe 6 songs from his massive repertoire.. it was very disappointing.

    Awesome

    by GL on 7/10/23

The concert was simply amazing. The only challenge is that we couldn’t hear Layla Hathaway over the music.

    Great Venue

    by JT on 7/10/23

Enjoyed going to concert at the new Venue at Thunder Valley Casino in Sacramento, CA! This place is spectacular and the perfect venue to see a concert! We saw Boney James, George Benson and Laila Hathaway. Our seats were high up in the upper level area but our view was super! The design of this arena really lends for a great experience no matter where your seats are located! The sound system is an experience in itself! Cannot wait to attend another Jazz concert at this Venue!

    Top Shelf

    by LisaB on 7/10/23

This was an excellent show with great performances by all. George Benson, at 80, still has it! He played some classic hits and could have played for another hour for me. Boney James always gives his best and Lalah Hathaway was sublime. Her bass player drowned her vocals which was a huge disappointment. I love all three performers.

It's time to rest and enjoy!!

    by CW on 7/10/23

I love George Benson, but it's time for him to rest. He's has created great music that will last us for a life time. I must say, he looked good but you can tell his stage presence is not the same.

    Great

    by BJ on 7/10/23

There were 5 people in my group attending the concert. We had a great time. All the artist, and their band put on a great show. The new theatre was really nice, but we all prefer the outside venue.

    Got to love him!

    by Maddy on 7/10/23

I’ve loved GB for many years, and have seen him a couple of times back in the day. He is 80 yrs old now and he gave it his best shot. He did most of his popular songs. He can still sing pretty good and played a bit of guitar. The show was short, maybe 45 minutes and no oncore. I get it. God bless him for still getting out there.

The show was awesome venue need improvement

    by Fapweb on 7/10/23

First time visiting the theater the show was great and the sound system was awesome. However, we had to work all the way down into the casino and smell all the cigarettes smoke then walk back where the venue is located. Additionally, when you are inside they only have hod dogs, chips and drinks.🫨.

    Big disappointment with George Benson

    by bruser on 7/10/23

George Benson was a big disappointment this time. We have seen his concerts over 15 times and this was definitely his poorest performance and he only played for about 45 minutes and did not even do any encores

    Awesome Show!!!

by Another Satisfied Customer! on 7/10/23

Great show! All Artist were on point and performed well. Big Mike did a solo guitar performance during Boney James session. Only words to describe would be PHONEMONIAL. I didn't quite know what to expect from George Benson. I will say he did not disappoint. He exceeded expectations. His voice is still strong, he moves well and delivered a great show. I'd certainly see him again.

    A disappointment

    by Jazzy on 7/10/23

Benson walked up the stage a little after 10pm-too long of a wait!. The two previous artists wore out the audience steeling most of the time for that evening. Long intermissions to replace the instruments for each artists. 1/3 of the people seating in the front-stage-expensive section didn’t even return after the Bonny James performance. That area looked empty. Benson had only a few generic musicians and he barely played the guitar and could not hit the notes with his voice. The audience started heading for the exit in after the 3rd song benson sang. He only sang 7 short pieces.

Great Concert and Nice new venue, but.......

    by Kathy G on 7/10/23

Very nice new venue. Big plus from being outside in the sun and heat. It was a great concert! Lalah is one of my favorite artists and Boney James is now one of my favorite artists. He and his band were phenomenal! I would have given this concert five stars but I must mention just 2 things: 1. The sound system for Lalah's performance was not great. Sounded muffled and there was some feedback. She still sounded amazing!!! 2. There should have been access directly to the parking lot and garage after the concert instead of having us herded like cattle through the casino!!! Too bad their scheme to send us back through the casino didn't work for most of us. Not cool!

    Great time

    by Tesa on 7/10/23

I had a wonderful time at the concert. The venue was so nice and clean. There was no smoking which was a beautiful thing. The only thing that could have been better is a real bar with a better selection of drinks

All respect to the GREAT George Benson, but…

by ScoresMan Got A Tattoo on 7/10/23

The beginning and middle of the show were great ( Lalah and Boney were phenomenal), but when Jorge came on, all the energy kind of left the room. Unfortunately, the man is a shadow of his former self… Both physically and vocally. At the end of the day, he is 80 years old, so you definitely have to lower your expectations, and he still plays the guitar better than most, but he is unable to output, the energy that you would be expecting from an artist of his magnitude, so it made the whole thing kind of sad to watch. He should, and I say this with all due respect, retire, and rest.

    No encore!

    by ParMan on 7/10/23

How do you leave the stage without performing your best two songs? Would not have gone if I had known. Feel like we were robbed. Buyer beware. Boney James was great.

    Boney was the best!

    by Terry on 7/10/23

Laila’s band drowned her out . George strained to sing, cut his show short, probably a good thing. Boney and his band put on a terrific show! Could’ve listened to him all night! His drummer! His bass guitar! Primo entertainment!

Awesome show but a few flaws

    by Alicia on 7/10/23

Laila Hathaway has such an awesome voice but unfortunately the base was so loud as well as the speakers we could feel the vibrations in our seats and it drowned out Laila’s beautiful voice. Bony James, to me was the highlight of the show. His interaction with both the audience and his band made for a wonderful show. He was awesome and I couldn’t get enough. George Benson was a little lack luster. No real interaction with the audience or his band. His time on stage was much shorter than Laila Hathaway and Bony James. It was as though he was just going through the motions but wasn’t really wanting to be there. He had top billing but didn’t give a top billing performance. If I were rating individually, I would rate Laila Hathaway with a 4 because it was way to loud; Bony James I would rate with a 5 and should have been the one getting top billing; George Benson, I would give a 3 and would not go to see again.

Ingress & egress to the venue via casino is ridiculous

    by VW on 7/10/23

Getting in and out of the venue via the casino is arduous and unnecessary, unless you expect everyone to enjoy the cigarette smoke, or gamble on the way out
