About

In First Wives Club, based on the smash hit 1996 film and Olivia Goldsmith’s bestselling novel, three former college friends reunite to find that they have more in common than their alma mater! Ditched by their respective husbands for younger women, they band together to settle scores with the men who did them wrong. Featuring a new book by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (Designing Women), known for having created some of popular culture’s most empowered female characters, songs – both original and classic – by Motown legends Holland-Dozier-Holland, and direction by Simon Phillips (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical), First Wives Club is a hilarious and inspiring story about friendship at its strongest… and revenge at its sweetest.

This musical is one of those shows where you can't take a critics opinion on going to the show or not. FWC is one of the best musicals I've seen in a while. The cast is phenomenal, and the ladies are true divas! The show is hilarious, dramatic at times, and has sweet moments. I recommend that you see this show before it's gone!

    the singers were good

by kathlintom on 3/20/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Some of the songs seemed to go on for to long for no reason they said what they had to say then started beating the dead horse Also I think there should have been a nod to the song YOU DONT OWN ME that was in the movie

    Loved First Wives Club

by Melnui on 3/20/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Overall loved the show even though there were some changes from the original movie. I loved the movie to begin with, so I looked forward to a couple key lines from the movie and only one was used. I did not find this crucial to the overall success of the show as many lines that were added were quite funny and had us laughing a lot. Loved the character of Annie, she nailed the performance and played Diane Keaton's character to the T. Loved the way they showed backstory of the couples getting married and how they followed up on their relationships in the end as well. Would love for Bette Midler to play her original character if it came to Broadway and I think this would help draw a bigger crowd there. Maybe a famous country singer could play the role of the new girlfriend of Elise's husband. Our party of 3 loved the show, even a male friend who has never saw the movie thought it was great. Goes to show that husbands whose wives drag them there may actually enjoy themselves (unless they are guilty of making the choices that the men in the show made ;)

First Wives Club was SO much fun!

by MNT2015 on 3/20/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I came in from out of state and took my daughter to see First Wives Club for her birthday. We both giggled and belly laughed the entire show. There were times my daughter held her hand over her mouth to control her laughter! I thought the characters were hilarious, and the actors and actresses did a fantastic job! +10 on the giggle factor!

I thought it was very well done and the cast was wonderful! My daughter and I enjoyed it and I hope it continues to have success. Loving the original movie it is hard not to compare the characters but overall I think they did a great job casting the characters. We were offered seats on the main level, but kept our original seats which were perfect to see the stage and the orchestra.

    Talent galore

by jllr on 3/18/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Loved the show more than I ever expected. The voices, personalities, sets were just top notch and Broadway quality. It was clear to hear and understand and I laughed out loud many times. It had a lot to live up to the iconic movie, but it is a musical and has a complete identity of its own. Really worth seeing.

We really enjoyed watching the First Wives Club musical over St. Patrick's Day weekend. The musical was very true to the show. I loved the singing, as well as the performance of the hair stylist. What a hoot!

    I loved Faith Prince!

Fairly true to movie. Still needs some editing as first half drags a little, but good quality for an out of town preview. I think that this could be honed into a wonderful musical.

    First wives good and bad

by WilliamM on 3/17/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I thought the performers for the most part were very talented. Singing was strong. Acting was good. Script needs some rewriting. Music was forgettable and often felt like the words simply did not fit the score. There wasn't one song I was humming the next day which is my litmus test.

    Little Gun, Big Show!

    by gleek4114 on 3/16/15Oriental Theatre - Chicago

After deliberation with my father, we came to the conclusion that we both LOVED it! I thought the music was the weakest link, but serviced the show well. I listened to the a naughty recording from the first preview and SEVERAL things have been evolving and changing. Many scenes have been tweaked and a whole song/scene has been cut (Remember Jerusalem). I don't remember how the book was at the first preview, but today the show flew by and before I knew it, the show was over. I could tell that they have been working on pacing/blocking/etc. Faith, Carmen, and Christine are golden and lead the show without reservation. As others have said, the husbands are not used a lot, but it's not their story! While I would always love more Gregg Edelman, he and the others were used as much as would be expected. Morgan Weed was fantastic and steals every scene she's in. It was a very sad sight seeing a giant theater so empty. The orchestra center was full with a few scattered on the sides and a few in the mezz, but the balcony was unused. I went to the stage door afterwards and chatted with Christine and Faith (Carmen didn't come out), and when we mentioned Broadway Christine said, "That's the sprit! Keep saying that! Tell everyone you know!" So it seems that they are not expecting a transfer. I for one, found it very entertaining and a very fun time in the theater! I'm going to try to see the final show just incase it doesn't transfer. I know I'm in the minority but I wholeheartedly recommend this show!

I haven't laughed so hard in years.

by JimLou on 3/16/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

More fun than you could imagine. Impeccable performances, stunning ballads, sidesplitting humor. An absolute BLAST! Not to love this show, you'd have to be a curmudgeon wearing a blindfold and ear plugs. Don't miss it.

    First Wives Club, was outstanding

by OldeBeau on 3/16/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

My wife an I both thoroughly enjoyed the comedy, super one liners, the music. The 3 stars almost put you at the movies. They were terrific, with excellent voices. A great casting job. The girlfriends did an awesome job as well. Actually they all were terrific. If Chicago folks missed this they missed a real gem. Thank you.

    Lacking

by music252 on 3/16/15Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The best word I can describe for this show is "lacking". It wasn't bad, it wasn't great, just ok. The company has a lot to do before taking to Broadway for a hit. It definitely has potential. The sets were all very similar to one another. The show picked up slightly after intermission with some fun big numbers. It was worth a night out, but I probably wouldn't make an effort to see it again.

The play was average. We have a personal objection to unnecessary foul language, not that three ex - wives wouldn't use some in discussing how they have been wronged. Taking God's name in vein though, not necessary, obviously a writer who doesn't have the skill to make their point any other way. That is a display of a lack of many things.
