The Entire Night was Truly an Incredible Experience
by San Diego Amanda…(The Marin County Runaway 😉) on 10/16/23Growing up in the Bay Area, I spent the majority of my youth listening to the Dead Kenndys and sporting the DK logo on almost everything I owned throughout my middle and high school years… (and beyond). Unfortunately, it was the mid-90’s and the band had all but broken up long before my time. When I saw they were coming here to San Diego, where I now live, I scrambled to buy tickets. The date of the show was rather unfortunate for them because Rancid and the Dropkick Murphys were playing at the Padres Stadium the very same night, practically walking distance from the Venue. I’ve seen those bands before and no doubt will (and since have) seen them again…BUT the Dead Kenndys playing live was definitely a rare opportunity. I brought my (then) 13 year old daughter, and was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, given the circumstances. A good mix of old school die-hard fans, younger generation new fans… and those like myself, somewhere in between. The band sounded amazing. Skiip was not too terribly obnoxious, nor did he try too hard to be a “Jello” replacement. He did make some insults to the audience, but honestly I don’t think anyone realized it as apparently “went right over their heads” while they cheered him on… I did have to laugh when he told a story about his doctor saying he’s too old for punk rock… especially because true punk rock is literally from his generation. Me being in my forties and all now, I’m actually too young to have been able to experience the REAL punk rock scene. Sadly it was before my time. However, as music lover, journalist, radio comedy writer, and even a former freelance arts and entertainment writer back in my younger years, I was fortunate to get to hear many a story about those days. As a natural writer I could go on and on… Let’s just say the night ended with my then 13 year old daughter (and I) going out for pizza with the band. Something my 13 year old self would’ve about died for… I’m especially grateful to East Bay Ray for that experience. As an aspiring guitar player herself, my daughter has since become quite inspired by his unique guitar stylings and has definitely became quite a DK fan… and made me an extremely proud Mom. 😁 I’d say it was a pretty memorable show.
