About Charlotte Motor Speedway Events

Concord, North Carolina, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing. The 1.5-mile quad-oval asphalt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway is located 12 miles northeast of Charlotte, and it has been hosting race events since opening in 1960. CMS is home to three annual NASCAR Cup events: the NASCAR All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600 in the spring, and the Bank of America Roval 400. In addition, CMS holds two NASCAR XFINITY Series races, the Alsco 300 and the Drive for the Cure 250, as well as the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. The speedway has a current seating capacity of 85,000, and in addition to the main course, the grounds feature a drag strip, a road course (the "Roval"), and a quarter-mile dirt track. From 1999 to 2009, CMS was also known as Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Charlotte Motor Speedway History

In the late 1950s, NASCAR driver Curtis Turner and racing promoter Bruton Smith teamed up to build Charlotte Motor Speedway after both made attempts to build a modern racecourse just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Joe Lee Johnson won the first race at the track, the World 600 on June 19, 1960. The first National 400 took place that fall and still takes place on the road course as the Bank of America Roval 400. In 1976 at Charlotte, Janet Guthrie became the first female competitor in a NASCAR Cup superspeedway race, finishing 15th in the World 500. In 1985, the inaugural The Winston took place, eventually evolving into the modern NASCAR All-Star Race.

Forty condominiums were built at CMS in 1984, making it the first sports facility in the United States to include this feature. A dozen additional condos were built in 1991, and lights were installed on the track the following year, making Charlotte Motor Speedway the first major course to allow for night races. The 2019 NASCAR Cup season was especially notable for CMS, with Kyle Larson taking the NASCAR All-Star Race, Martin Truex Jr. winning the Coca-Cola 600, and Chase Elliott claiming victory in the Bank of America Roval 400.

I have never had a bad time at the speedway. Always things to do long before the races start. Constant action. Definitely moneys worth.

We were very pleased with the event.

I was skeptical about the 3rd party thing...but I have to say it went very smoothly. The day I bought the tickets I was notified and got the tickets. I had not been to Charlotte Speedway for about 4 years, except when I was very young and my Dad raced in NASCAR. The best thing was the seats were excellent. Thank you!!!

    by S. W. on 11/12/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

World Finals @ The Dirt Track Charlotte was awesome. Very well run, track was good top to bottom (other than rough place for short time in turn one). Finally got to see the Big Block Modifieds after wanting to for 30 years. Yes those guys are professionals fantastic race. Love the Late Models always side by side racing. Charlotte Track is excellent for them. Sprint cars......WOW....their speed is unreal

    Okay....

by TC on 10/24/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

I feel there should have been less vendors and more cars on display. I would have liked to have an event map before arriving so I could plan accordingly on what I wanted to do. Couldn’t find the golf cart to rent.

    Awesome

by Squeaky on 10/21/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Very clean dragway. There were vendors on hand selling all kinds of food. The folks at the information booths were out of this world kind and very helpful. I was really impressed since this was the first time I had been. I will be back.

    Awesome!

I attended the 4-wide Nationals in Concord North Carolina on Saturday 10/12/19. This is one of the best races in the area. No matter if you are young or older, an adult or a child, there is something for everyone. I try to attend the race at least once a year, and it's always a great time. Each ticket is a pit pass and you can walk right up to the cars and drivers to see the action in person. Everybody should put this on their bucket list to do at least once. It is a great afternoon.

    ZMAX needs to do better

by JCT on 10/17/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

Lots of angry fans on Sunday - not from the rain but because no one in charge would make the obvious decision to postpone until Monday. It took WAY too long. On Monday there were very few places/choices for food and drinks. The merchandise store was closed, no free giveaways from sponsors, etc. A disappointing fan experience.

    Felt disconnected

by Lucy on 10/16/19Charlotte Motor Speedway - Concord

It would be nice if we could see the geen/red lighting from the side view. Also, the TV is so small you can see names or know who is who if you miss the announcing. It would be nice to have the winner circle where we all can see. Other than that loved iit!!!
