Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

Great game and atmosphere. It’ll be even better once Calgary gets a new rink they deserve and desperately need.

Old stadium awful tv’s in the bleeders

by Fan on 1/23/24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Yes I know the tickets are up there. Experience was good despite a dilapidated building. I know they are getting a new area but the fact that the screens up there are so old they might as well be black and white. Just another embarrassing thing the the Calgary entertainment group love to show their fan basis’ they don’t care at all but still demand tax payer dollars to keep there billion dollars vanity project afloat. Can we get a ownership group that wants to

I forgot how much I hate going to games

by Flames Fan on 1/22/24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I spent the money for great seat only to spend 20 minutes in line for the bathroom twice and twenty minutes in line for food and drinks twice. Im not ignorant. I realize the old facility has this issue but youd think that at least food service would be fast. Oh yeah and then the longest lineup of all was to pay for parking. After spending 500 bucks on tickets for two people they gotta make us all wait to park to get there 18 bucks in parking. Just a horrible setup and arrangement by all parties involved. I was debating become a season ticket holder. Not a chance in hell now. I wouldnt want to host clients here ever. Im really looking forward to watching the games i feel like at home. Ive got lots of money and I am a fan but im not going to anymore flames games. If I really want to get the first class flames experience at home ill install a timed lock on my bathroom at home and sit in my car for 45 minutes waiting to park on my driveway.

    Great game

by Fan on 1/3/24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

A game worth watching, great New Year’s Eve vibe and audience compared to the usual Saddle morgue full of Calgary businessmen who aren’t even watching the game.

    Flames preseason Sept. 24+29. 2023.

by Chris Tazzman on 10/2/23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I figured I would combine my review for the two preseason games I attended this week. I am a nine-game pack holder in section 203 row 23, but I like these preseason games to catch a game from a bit better seat without breaking the bank. The Flames won 10-0 on Sunday Sept 24 over Vancouver and I was able to get good seats in row 19 section 202 for myself and three others for $124 through Ticketmaster ticket exchange. The game on Friday Sep. 29 I got my cousin (who has never seen a game from the first bowl) and I section 102 row 24 for $135 each which is around the price for a press level seat for a regular season Battle of Alberta. Granted the Oilers never bring any stars down, but it is nice to see a game in the first bowl regardless. Off to tonight's final preseason game against the Jets which is the first game in my pack then it all starts for real Oct. 11. Can't wait, GO FLAMES!!!!!!!
