About

Alex More has a story to tell. A struggling actor in L.A., Alex takes a job working in the mall in Barbra Streisand's Malibu basement. One day, the Lady Herself comes downstairs to play. It feels like real bonding in the basement, but will their relationship ever make it upstairs? BUYER & CELLAR is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs.
The New York Times critics Ben Brantley and Charles Isherwood recently raved about the play. Brantley wrote that Buyer & Cellar is "the most talked about new comedy of the season." WQXR Radio's Isherwood called the hit comedy "very funny" and "a tour-de-force performance."

Not up on my barbara references

by jambot54 on 5/23/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

What Michael did was awesome - he was impressive, but so many of the jokes and references were completely lost on me and my sister - both under 30.

Love Mark Uribe -- not the play

by MrsJewels on 5/23/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We went because we loved Mark in Ugly Betty. The premise of the plot sounded interesting/funny but the script really was just so-so. There were a few funny bits but for the most part, we kept checking our watches waiting for it to end. . It was 100 minutes with no intermission. ( should find a way to make a break for those after dinner performances) Also, it did not provide enough of an opportunity for Mark to really shine. We would definitely go see him in something again, but we cannot recommend this play to theatre loving friends.

    Buyer & Cellar was adorable!

by Lady20 on 5/22/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Went to see the play with 5 other girlfriends. We are all "a certain age" and could really appreciate the way Barbra was depicted. It was such a clever idea and very well executed. He was absolutely adorable and I don't know how he maintained such a high energy level with no break for as long as he did! A great event for a girls night out, but I'm not sure if many men would really enjoy it.

    "….Cellar" is at the top!

by Mattzigzag on 5/21/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

"Buyer & Cellar" was a fun, and funny, and touching trip to the "mall" in Barbra Streisand's basement. Michael Urie is a TOP NOTCH actor who brought ALL of the characters to life during the 1 hour and 40 minutes performance. At first, when you look at the stage before the show, a person can wonder, "How in the world will I connect and stay interested in this show when the set is a simple 3 wall version of a cellar…..a white bench; a white table and chair along with a tea cup and pot?" But from the moment Mr. Urie steps on stage you are drawn in. We are reminded its a piece of fiction based on Ms. Streisand's REAL book of "design" that she put out a couple of years ago. We learn about human emotions and even when you have "everything", a person still craves the simplest thing we all crave, which is, "the human connection". A simple play with a simple message delivered with touching humor and respect to all of the characters on stage brought to life by one amazing actor. Well worth the visit to the "cellar"!

This theatre is small with no bad seats. Set/Lighting/Video design was charming and set the tone nicely.

    !00 minutes of pure entertainment!

by CinciNa on 5/20/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Michael Urie takes you along on a hilarious 100 minute romp through Barbra Streisand's underground mall. He keeps you totally immersed in the storyline - singlehandedly. How he maintains high energy for this character throughout the show is beyond me. All I know is I was looking for a Broadway show experience and got it - at Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue! The fact that it was all just a few blocks from my hotel made it that much more appealing. He plays a shop clerk interacting with his boyfriend, the housekeeper, Barbra, and James Brolin. Yes, he pulls it all off. The writing is excellent - clever and witty. This small theatre doesn't have a bad seat in the house. Everyone is near enough to the stage to stay engaged in the show. If you're looking to be entertained - and know anything about Barbra you will appreciate and enjoy this show.

    Wow! What a chameleon.

by DPL57 on 5/20/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

A fun show if you love OR hate Barbra Streisand. Although the fictional aspect is VERY emphasized, the viewer is drawn in and believes that they're seeing real facets of Barbra. It is a ONE person show and he IS amazing. Be sure to use the restroom right before the show as it has no intermission and laughing that hard on a full bladder would be painful.

    Clever and Funny

by mzullo on 5/20/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Michael Urie was amazing as a variety of characters in this clever take on Barbara Streisand basement mall. His 100 minutes on stage never got boring which being a one man show is usually the case. If you have the chance to see it, go.

Buyer & Cellar with Michael Urie not to be missed!

by ilaria0112 on 5/20/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Michael Urie, from Ugly Betty and Broadway's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, is not-to-be missed in this hilarious one-man/woman show! Urie plays a struggling actor who takes a job working as a mall attendant in Barbra Streisand's Malibu home . . . basement. Urie brings to life the great Diva herself, her husband, James Brolin, and a host of other characters in such rapid, revolving-personality succession that you can't laugh fast enough to keep up! Urie is so magnetically electric that the audience is often prone to outbursts. You just get swept away!

    Terribly bad

by Anonymous on 5/19/14Water tower - Chicago

This is far overpriced performance of one actor; you can add $20 and see an opera or a musical. In addition, the idea of performance not interesting, and the jokes not funny; however, this one actor is talented but not enough for $80 ticket.

Buyer and Cellar is a delight!

by HBernie on 5/19/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

It is 100 minutes of non-stop smiles, laughs and just plain fun. The actor (Michael Urie) is tremendously talented and watching his performance in this one-man show was an amazing experience. If you like Barbra Streisand you will love this! But even if you don't, it will still be a wonderful time.

Hilarious romp through Bab's cellar. Michael Urie is marvelous as he takes us on a magic, fun-filled, drama laced, tale of life under Barbra's house. Side splitting laughter on every turn. Would highly recommend to anyone.

    So Much Fun!

by LSButton on 5/19/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This was a laugh out loud 90 minutes, and who wouldn't like that? Performance was amazing. Script was so clever. Intimate setting so you really felt like you were part of it. I laughed so hard I made myself snort, and that just hasn't happened in years. You must go and share in this experience. It's a memory you'll cherish, I promise!

    This play needs a rewrite!

by CallisMom on 5/18/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

If this was a 5 minute skit fine, but at an hour 40 minutes, don't waste your time or money. It drags on, and it just missed the mark. ----------------
