About

John Newton (Tony Award® nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart (Erin Mackey). Accompanied by his slave, Thomas (Tony Award® winner Chuck Cooper), John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.

Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

Nothing is missed on this musical with beautiful sets, costumes, choreography, music and one of the best casts on Broadway. This musical has a story that everyone can find a part of themselves in. Was brilliantly done!

by PFP7 on 10/12/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

It is a shame this show is closing! The music fabulous and voices beautiful! The scene of the shipwreck and rescue was brilliant and unexpected! Costumes fab! One of THE best i have experienced! Is a story of courage to end slavery in Britian and one few people know. Nice to be able to see a well crafted spectaculary done show withour unnecessary bad language other shows seem to think has to be in their scripts! Chuck Cooper and Ms Mackey were magnificent as was Josh Young! Ending chorus brought chills and joy! LOVED live orchestra! Excellent!

"Amazing Grace" was just that.....AMAZING !!!

by Iluvsports32 on 10/11/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Wow!! What a way to tell a story about one of the most beloved and well-known songs of all time! Powerful singing. Beautiful acting. Tremendous visuals. This play/musical has EVERYTHING ! If you don't know John Newton's story, you will have a new appreciation for the song. If you already know the story, it will just move you to your core as you see with your eyes how the song came to be. It's leaving the end of October 2015, so if you are thinking of going, DO IT NOW !! You only have a few short weeks left..but you will definitely be inspired and grateful that you did.

    Amazing Grace...simply amazing!

by CJWARD on 10/11/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

We were planning a trip east from Texas to celebrate my parents 80th birthdays when we first heard about "Amazing Grace." I knew we had to fit this into our trip because I have always loved the hymn and the story behind it which many do not know. It was nothing short of amazing, brought tears to our eyes and I hope and pray it goes on tour as I would most definitely see it again.

    Amazing Grace, Don't miss it

by mrgdo on 10/10/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

A little slow getting started, but worth every penny, some flawless scenes (like a near drowning in a ship wreck) and a wonder finale

How a Christian view changed slavery in America

by Anonymous on 10/8/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

We wanted to see the play, as the song is one with which we have been familiar for as long as we can remember. We knew of Newton's conversion and subsequent song of the same title, but knew nothing of his early years. We also knew nothing of his future wife and her aversion to slavery and tenacity in speaking up when not considered an acceptable way to see the treatment of blacks. The acting and singing were wonderful and costumes and sets beautifully done! We are disappointed that the musical didn't catch on, as what a message for our time with the resurgence of black/white wedge issues in the culture. The message of forgiveness and overcoming is a message we all need.

    Educational and inspirational

by jameschan6 on 10/7/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

"Amazing Grace" renews my belief in idealism in work and life. Until I saw the musical, I didn't think much about 300 years of Atlantic slave trade. Its educational benefit is obvious. But the reward of the show goes deeper. It is an eye opener to see how people exploit one another in the name of money while suppressing calls of conscience and meaning. I completely understand John Newton's moment of spiritual awakening. I too had a similar experience in a cathedral when my life was at a low ebb. Many of us experienced intense, personal feelings of divine understanding. We know why we live and what is good. "Amazing Grace" is a great drama that reminds us of our ability to feel and be divine.

    Not quite "Amazing," but enjoyable

by Jockdock on 10/7/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

For me, the original musical score for this show was the highlight. The male and female leads were absolutely top-level Broadway talents. I read up a bit on John Newton's story in preparation for seeing the show, but even still, the plot lines were somewhat disjointed. Moreover, the ending seems to imply that John Newton wrote the musical score for the iconic title song, when in fact he wrote only the lyrics.

This is an uplifting, exciting play. I would be going a second time, however it is closing. I am sorry it is closing because I think many people are missing the best play of the season.

    Amazing Grace was Wonderful

by Aquil5 on 10/6/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

I am so glad I had the opportunity to see this show. I thought it was very well done and I loved the music. I left the theater feeling so uplifted! I can't believe this show is leaving broadway already. Perhaps a DVD should be made of the musical so that those who can't afford to go to a broadway show can be blessed by seeing it.

    Amazing Grace was amazing!

by Apricottie on 10/6/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Upon recommendations by friends and reviews, I travelled cross country for this musical. The Nederlabd is a cozy theater, seats a little tight but good acoustics. Sets were creative and perfect, loved all the many songs, cast voices over the top. Combined well personal stories of redemption and courage with historical tragedy of slavery. Highly recommend!

    Amazing Grace

by SummerSyl on 10/6/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

I can't afford to see too many plays, so I have to be careful when I choose which one I want to see. Sometimes I set the bar too high and I'm disappointed. Not this time. The story should have been told. The songs and music were beautiful and I do hope they make an album. I wish I had more time to save enough money to see it again. I thank the author and cast for a very uplifting Saturday afternoon.
