About

Zebra on Tour

Zebra galloped out of New Orleans in early 1975. The trio, consisting of Randy Jackson, Felix Hanemann and Guy Gelso, concocted their moniker from a 1926 Vogue magazine cover and soon won over the South and East Coast. In 1982 Zebra's self-titled debut album went gold and was the fastest selling debut album in Atlantic Records' history thanks to the radio and MTV airplay of "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind the Door?". Veteran producer Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick) also helmed the follow-up, "No Tellin' Lies". The songs range from the hard-rocking "Wait Until the Summer's Gone" to the Beatle-esque ballad, "Lullaby". With the release of their third Atlantic album "3.V", Zebra took their career one step farther: the album's credits read "Produced by Randy Jackson and Zebra". Thus, for the very first time, the group gained complete control of its creative output. A collection of the finest songs they have ever written, "3.V" clearly shows Zebra's lasting power and originality. In all, Zebra fans enjoyed a total of five videos aired on MTV and have given the band combined album sales of nearly 2 million worldwide. Zebra emerged from the studio again in 2003 with "ZEBRA IV", on Mayhem Records. This could possibly be the best effort by Zebra to date with powerful cuts which include "Arabian Nights", "Why" and "Waiting To Die". Zebra's live performances often last over two hours and showcase their new material along with all the classic Zebra tunes: "Who's Behind the Door?", "Tell Me What You Want", "Wait Until the Summer's Gone", "Bears", "One More Chance" and other all-time favorites including an occasional Led Zeppelin cover. "ZEBRA THE DVD", released in 2008 captures the band's energy and power on stage. The DVD features live concert footage from both Long Island and the House of Blues in New Orleans in addition to several interviews and bonus features. In 2010 Zebra was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and is acknowledged as Louisiana's #1 Rock and Roll band by the Louisiana Music Commission. On October 18, 2012 Zebra was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Celebrating their 40 Anniversary in 2015 Zebra continues to WOW audiences across the country with their Hard-Rocking Live shows performing in select markets nationwide.-Making a Triumphant Return to NYC in November 2019.

Zebra ROCKED BB Kings!! You should not miss this show. Guy Gelso on drums, Felix Hanemann on bass and keyboard and the incredible Randy Jackson on guitar and lead vocals. The Led Zeppelin encore was better than Zep!!

  • Zebra-still super under-rated!

Ive been catching this band live since the early 80's , hadnt seen them in 10 yrs, theyre still in great form and rocked everyone of their signature songs!

  • Awesome Zebra show

by EWULTD on 5/23/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I'd seen Zebra last time they came to BB Kings, but this show was almost non-stop rock n roll. They played every song I could think of that I was hoping they'd play even though some of their songs had little radio airplay when the cd came out. Besides Who's behind the door & Wait until the summers gone, they also added Can't Live Without, etc. All their great stuff. The took it up a notch on their Zeppelin encore set. A full Kasmir play, and really outdid themselves on Whole Lotta Love. An absolutely awesome show. And the sound on my videos came out decent, including pictures. The meet & greet after the show was icing on the cake, which I have pictures of the band and myself.

  • This show set the bar for all others to reach!

by Michael38 on 5/23/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

What an AMAZING show! I have seen Zebra many, many times before and this show blew me away. Their first 90 minutes or so was a set of their own material and it rocked so hard that the foundation began to crumble. All three guys sounded unbelievable, Randy's guitar was great and his voice was indescribable, Felix's bass and keyboards were, as always, perfect and Guy's drumming was perfectly on point as shown during his off-th-cuff drum solo during "The La La Song". After the first set was done, they took as small break and returned for set #2 which was ALL Led Zeppelin songs! All I can say is that the this set caused the crumbling foundation to give way and they leveled the place, figuratively of course. Guys, thanks for another terrific performance and I'll see you soon!

  • Ride the Zebra!!!

by BigV2011 on 5/23/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Zebra rocked BB's to the delight of a sold out capacity crowd, full Zebra set and Zep set encore. The band was in fine form as usual, a couple of early glitches and then it was off to the races! I would highly reommend checking them out if you have the opportunity, I've been seeing them live for 34 years and they never dissapoint!!

  • Zebra still rocks

by bmax on 5/22/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show, over an hour hour and a half of great Zebra material AND a set of Zeppelin material. Randy's voice is amazing and makes for a super Zeppelin tribute. I am so happy they came to MA after all of these years, hopefully it is not the last time!! Thanks for a great show!!!

  • Zebra was a little loose, bad mix

by bucketofish on 5/22/11Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 3 out of 5

My second time at this venue, and bad mix both times. Bass moved air, but the bass line itself was barely audible - had no tone. All guitar in front-of-house spkrs, very harsh. As for the band, all clearly excellent players, but band as a whole was loose. Guy has chops, but drums too busily. Felix goes back and forth between playing bass gtr, and playing bass on his keyboard - when on keyboard you really miss the bass gtr. Randy still hits the notes, but tired out and cracking before the night was over. But i you like Zebra it's still a show worth seeing, cuz they genuinely want to put on their best show, and you never know which show will be the last.

Must see this band!! Great live and kick ass Zep covers.

  • by astroid on 7/13/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 2 out of 5

Starting the concert a whole hour late was ridiculous. We saw Randy in the lobby at 8:10. The majority of the audience was middle age and up (we are 62). Loved the first part but after break were ready to hear our favorites from first album. Our grandsons were bored; we became bored, too and walked out. Paid almost $1,000.00 for 8 tickets. The band is still awesome but we were disappointed. The sound mix was terrible; couldn't even hear the horns and we were about 20 feet away from them. New Orleans diehard fans deserved and expected much better.

  • Amazing!

by LorettaKeane on 7/13/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Zebra is still rocking after 35 years. I'm so glad I got to see them again after this long. Used to go see them whenever I could on LI but moved to Phoenix and hadn't seen them perform together for over 25 years. The venue was great too! So glad we made the trip!

  • ZEBRA

the show was very slow and tiring in the start.....took someone that did not remember the band from our youth. probably would have left if there was not another couple with us. second set kicked AZZ. Enjoyed hearing the their music and then their rendentions of a couple Zep songs.

  • Zebra 35th Anniversary Concert

by MitchPG on 7/12/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

This was a fabulous concert! The band is so fantastic, the music was awesome, and the guys rocked the house! Zebra is the greatest rock "secret" - powerful music and lyrics and a whole lot of fun in the mix! Felix, Randy and Guy not only put on a great show, they genuinely love their fans, and the fans feel it and return it ten-fold. The excitement was palpable as they took the stage and rocked until the very last minute! I've been a die-hard Zebra fan since 1976 and have followed them religiously ever since. It was my honor to see their 35th anniversary concert! And to be present when they were inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame was such a great moment. The guys were so proud, and I was so proud of them! They are the greatest! Zebra forever!

  • by Riptide2 on 7/12/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 3 out of 5

Overall it was a good show. I unfortunately was expecting better. The Mahalia Jackson Theater is a great venue and acusticly ideal for music. The issue during the Zebra performance was that the bass drum level was so high that it actually drowned out the guitars and keyboards! I've seen Zebra many times and they always put on a great show, but this one was hard to listen to.

  • Zebra redeemed themselves

by gerbera on 7/12/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5

I have to admit that I was more than a little upset having to wait an hour for Zebra to start the show. Maybe because there was a lot of family and friends in the audience, regardless, i have seen many concerts in my day and never had that long a delay. BUT, they won me over!! What a show-they are such good musicians and showmen. Guy was exceptional on drums, his drum solo made us think of Neal Pert and Randy's vocals and guitar was dead on. Felix's ease on bass, keyboard and vocals was evident. They did an accoustical set for 40 minutes, took a 20 minute break, then it was rocking for 2 hours! Okay so I have never waited for a band for an hour but I also have never seen a band for 2:40!! Congratulations to Zebra on being inducted to the LA Hall of Fame, they were presented the certificate during the show. Thanks for a great show
