About

Cat Stevens rose to fame in the swinging '60s with chart-topping pop hits such as "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest." His early career was interrupted by a near-fatal battle with tuberculosis - a turning point that ignited his quest for peace and understanding. Emerging from this experience, he rapidly rose to become one of the most prolific singer/songwriter icons of the '70s, captivating the world with soul-stirring anthems such as "Wild World," "Father and Son," "Peace Train," and "Morning Has Broken." His classic albums Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat have earned him a rightful place in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Following another dangerous encounter with fate and a near-drowning experience in 1975, Cat's life took a spiritual turn as he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. Leaving the music industry behind, Yusuf dedicated his life to God, family, and humanitarian work, for which he received numerous prestigious international honors, including the World Award for "humanitarian relief work helping children and victims of war" and the Man of Peace Award, voted for by The Nobel Peace Laureates.

The latest chapter is Yusuf's return to music, through which he has re-joined his past and present lives. Now known as Yusuf/Cat Stevens - a name that represents the synergy between the two key periods of his existence - his inspirational story is one of quest, survival, and redemption. With more than 100 million records sold and billions of streams, his soulful voice and poetic lyrics continue to inspire, now intertwined with a life of activism and altruism. As a campaigner for faith education, ecological consciousness, and humanitarian work, Yusuf has become a global advocate for peace and coexistence.

  • Cat Stevens/Yusuf was the best!

    by LM314 on 10/5/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Cat Stevens' in 2014 and did not think that he could be better in 2016, but he was! The sound and set at the Oriental Theater in Chicago was perfect. Cat's voice was perfect. The musicians he performed with were phenomenal! This goes down as my favorite show ever and I go to a lot of shows!

I've been a Cat Stevens fan since the early '70's. I was excited to see he was on tour and purchased 2 tickets for my wife & myself. Cat did not disappoint. I loved the show. He is one of my favorite songwriters. My wife & I are so glad we came down to Chicago to the show. Tics were a little pricey but you only live once!

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens Concert Recap...

by MusicalMoments on 10/5/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Cat Stevens/Yusuf was an exceptional play/musical creation called a concert that I just can't shake. He performed at the beautiful Oriental Theater in Chicago. I'd say the majority of the folks there were A.A.R.P. card holders. A collection of happy, peaceful people who waited anxiously for their guy, to transport them back to another time. You may be aware that Cat/Yusuf who is 68, left music for 27 years and then came back. For those of us who have loved him either for a particularly addictive albums (Tea for the Tillerman & Teaser and the Firecat) and/or huge catalog of music he has written, it's like seeing someone coming back from the dead. You could feel the happiness in the room. Okay it might have been the copious amounts of alcohol being consumed around us, but I really want to believe it was the joy everyone was anticipating by seeing a long time favorite artist. Everyone who loves music knows you pay to ride on the notes. The artist on stage plays a key and you know before the crowd, he's playing your song. It's the one you had in your mind and tried not to hope too much for... but...when it happens, its Heaven. You close your teary eyes and drift back to whatever decade this song first played in your life. Memories, both good and bad pour through your mind and settle in your heart. I swear it's better than any drug. Our red velvet seats in the top balcony looked straight on to a lovely London night skyline on a large black screen. Once it was lifted, the stage was set as "A Cat's Attic", a replica of the room above his parents Cafe in London's West End. It's where as a boy he would paint and play other people’s music, till he discovered it was easier and less frustrating to just write his own music. Cat/Yusuf played either in the center of the stage or from the room itself when playing the piano instead of the guitar. Two other band members were to the right beautiful room. It was sweet to watch Yusuf try to play on a newer instrument, and then request his original guitar. He took us on a journey about his life. To be in the presence of his wisdom at this age was a treat! He said, “You will never be at peace, until you reach what you are looking for.” He spoke of the "Purple Haze" of the Jimmy Hendricks days. He shared a story of visiting friends in Malibu and swimming in the Pacific, but he wasn't aware of the strength of the water. He was seconds from death when he called out to God and said, "If you save me, I will dedicate my life to you. He said, "There wasn't a space between my prayers offered and the gentlest of waves hitting me from behind." His exit from the musical scene, happened not long after that incident. His playlist contained 36 songs with an intermission. Even though I only knew the most popular of his tunes, I enjoyed the entire ride. I had to stop myself from feeling guilty for having a seat, when I judged myself not as worthy as the super fans I enjoyed watching just a couple rows in front of us. They were nearly out of their mind with happiness knowing each and every one of the songs he played than spanned 50 years of music making. They made the show even better for me with their enormous joy. What I thought was an expensive ticket, turned out to be a huge deposit in my musical memory bank, as well as another Bucket List evening I will always remember.

The concert was a rare treat in music - Cat Stevens took us through his life and career through his words and music. It was a wonderful experience listening to hit after hit, great acoustic song followed by another great acoustic song - a beautiful mix of 36 songs. Seeing this concert was one of the highlights of my life - thank you Yusuf/Cat Stevens.

  • Cat Stevens - Heck of a Show

    by Danny54321 on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Cat Stevens put on an incredible show. Yusef’s voice is impeccable. But what really made the show is that Yusef was really enjoying himself. All the hits were played, and it was interesting and entertaining when Yusef told us the stories behind the songs. If you are going to see his show, you’ll be on one heck of a journey!

  • Fantastic show

by BBMLB on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably one of the best concerts that we've attended in quite some time. We go to a lot of concerts each year. I really enjoyed the conversation that Yusuf has with the audience throughout the show. He gives a background on each song and its meaning, it makes his music that much more enjoyable to listen to, because you know why the song was written. The 27 year wait to hear him preform is well worth it. Would see this again.

  • Bloody FAAAANtastic!

by 1Pazzo1 on 10/4/16Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Like everyone else here, I felt such a void when Cat stopped recording. So very, VERY glad he's back. I'm just blown away that his voice is very nearly unchanged from all those decades ago. Performed lots of hits -- and a few lesser-known songs -- up through the title track from Roadsinger. Almost seemed like he was leaving a note for his son, saying "this is who your Dad was". His music is so timeless, and his musicianship so refined. Still blows me away today, just as it did all those decades ago. Bloody fantastic concert.

  • Joyous Event

    by ter8377 on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This my second CS concert and I loved better than the first one because the sound at the Oriental Therater was superior, he seemed more relaxed and having fun with the crowd. He played one of my favorites;" Boy with Moon and Star on His Head". I believe that he is the best poet:song writer/singer of my generation. I'm sorry he was persecuted for his faith and we lost 27 years of his brilliance.

  • Cat Stevens from the beginning!

by ScottMack on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Played everything from the first albumn to the present. Almost 3 hours of music! Great stories, great backing band of 2, guitar and bass, unforgetable night!!!

  • This Cat has nine lives!

    by Dot56 on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Cat in the late 70's and he was way too much into himself during the performance - threatened to stop the show if flash photography didn't stop. This version of Cat is more reflective, more aware of the impact of his music and his journey. He appeared to enjoy the show almost as much as his audience did. That made for a special night!

  • Magical Night

by Woofma on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing Yusuf Cat Stevens was something I have longed for! I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity! His vocals were amazing and clear and loved hearing his stories and seeing a part of his life and experiences growing up.

  • Cat Stevens was amazing!!!

by PoppieDave on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

First time I ever saw Yusuf (Cat Stevens) in concert even though his "Tea for The Tillerman" album remains my ALL TIME FAVORITE. He did a wonderful job of tracing his career and life through his music and lyrics. The other guitarists on stage with him were fabulous as well. The tickets were expensive, but worth every penny! My wife and I actually sold tickets to "Hamilton" so we could see this concert. Best choice ever!

  • Cat should know what the audience wants to hear

    by RickD5 on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Saw Cat Stevens last year in Chicago and it was one of the greatest concerts I have ever witnessed. Unfortunately this time, he decided to dig deep into his catalog and play a lot of non classic hits. I can only assume that he became bored of playing what everyone wanted to hear. Voice is terrific, but if he is not going to play many of the favorites, then he should not charge the premium price. If I had not seen the first concert which was a catalog of his many classics, I may have enjoyed this more.

  • A Simply Wonderful Cat Like Night

by Dylanized on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen Cat Stevens in 1970 - opening for Traffic - and having him knock down the audience and 3 encores - I have always remained a fan. When he left the industry to pursue his other dreams - he was missed - but respected - because the music he wrote and his voice - were unlike any other in the industry. Years passed - but the music and the voice were never forgotten. In 2008 I had the opportunity to see him perform for the first time live - in Dublin - 38 years to the month I had seen him open for Traffic. Had he lost anything - NO! His voice and music were timeless. Again in 2014 - I caught the show in Chicago - no disappointment here at all and then finally - September 30th - Oriental Theater - here came a Cat's Attic. Beyond all expectations - digging down deep into that Catalog - and throwing us songs that had not be played or heard for years.. I was able to take my daughter to two of these shows - and she knows - all about this most gifted artist..

  • A Cat's Attic: Yusuf one of the top concerts I hav

by Anonymous on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My hubby and I both considered this concert a bucket list item. We both loved his music and had never had the chance to see him in concert so when he came to Chicago we jumped at the chance to see him. Yusuf did not disappoint. He managed to make a concert in a 2000+ seat venue feel very personal and intimate. The theatre he sang in is quite familiar as I have seen many shows there. Of course the music was fabulous, he sang every song I hoped to hear except one. The concert had no opening act and last for three hours with only one short intermission. Amazing!!! I thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and loved learning about where he was in his life as he wrote each song. If you are a Cat Stevens/Yusuf fan this concert is a once in a lifetime, must see concert.

  • Cat's Back

by Cattraxx on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I waited my whole life for this concert, it did not let me down. Yusef missed only a few beats during this soul stirring performance. Reaching into his hat full of tunes we were privy to his chart topping hits as well as songs we may have never heard or remembered

  • Once in a lifetime, magical evening.

by HannahsSister on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

It was Cat Stevens, singing to a crowd of no question, admiring/loving fans. Does any more really need to be said? It was music for the soul. He told basically his life story from the age of 17 when he wrote, "I Love My Dog", to the present. Unprecedented 33 song setlist. My hope is we'll get another chance to see him soon.

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens was beyond amazing!

by JPHJPH on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw him in Detroit in 1976, the Majikat Tour, and I thought that experience could not equaled. I was mistaken. Forty years later and he still mesmerizes with his gentle kindness and soulful singing. My youngest sister accompanied me so that we could enjoy "my" music together. I think she was as moved as I was. The Oriental Theatre is exquisite! The acoustics were perfect and the stage set was fun. Loved the full moon!

  • Cat Stevens still amazing after all these years!

by Davgirl on 10/4/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show! Played many of his popular hits. I loved how he talked between songs about what was going on with his life at that time. It was a very personal concert and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

  • Fantastic show!

Cat Stevens is still amazing. Saw him 40 years ago before he stopped performing, and his voice is still as strong as ever. His songs are timeless, and it was one of the best shows I've seen!
