About

Cat Stevens rose to fame in the swinging '60s with chart-topping pop hits such as "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest." His early career was interrupted by a near-fatal battle with tuberculosis - a turning point that ignited his quest for peace and understanding. Emerging from this experience, he rapidly rose to become one of the most prolific singer/songwriter icons of the '70s, captivating the world with soul-stirring anthems such as "Wild World," "Father and Son," "Peace Train," and "Morning Has Broken." His classic albums Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat have earned him a rightful place in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Following another dangerous encounter with fate and a near-drowning experience in 1975, Cat's life took a spiritual turn as he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. Leaving the music industry behind, Yusuf dedicated his life to God, family, and humanitarian work, for which he received numerous prestigious international honors, including the World Award for "humanitarian relief work helping children and victims of war" and the Man of Peace Award, voted for by The Nobel Peace Laureates.

The latest chapter is Yusuf's return to music, through which he has re-joined his past and present lives. Now known as Yusuf/Cat Stevens - a name that represents the synergy between the two key periods of his existence - his inspirational story is one of quest, survival, and redemption. With more than 100 million records sold and billions of streams, his soulful voice and poetic lyrics continue to inspire, now intertwined with a life of activism and altruism. As a campaigner for faith education, ecological consciousness, and humanitarian work, Yusuf has become a global advocate for peace and coexistence.

There's no need to review this artist nor is there a reason to ask for a review. Cat Stevens/Yusuf is as awesome as ever. I saw him in 2014 and I'm going to see him in 2016. Never thought 'd be able to see Cat Stevens in concert but holy crap I can. And will every time I can.

I received this request to review this show 4 months ago. I wanted to wait until I had just the right words to do the show justice. Words like, unbelievable ~ awesome are not enough. It was one of the best times of my life. Thanks for that, Cat.

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens to a father and a son.

by rvhawkeye on 3/13/15Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Such an influential and memorable component of my childhood and adolescence was the music of Cat Stevens, which I was introduced to by my father. So as a gift to him, in honor of those rich musical memories growing up, I took him as my guest to "Peace Train...Late Again" tour in Chicago. He never thought he'd get the opportunity to see Cat Stevens in concert, since he was only young and still growing up while Cat Stevens was touring in the 70s. Needless to say, catching the Peace Train in Chicago was an unexpected and highly impactful night. Yusuf/Cat Stevens' well-known rich and melodious voice was met by a roaring audience and standing ovations after every song. It was chilling to merely be in the presence of such a legend, and with a unbelievably loving and electric audience surrounding us.

  • Yusuf is amazing

by snowmama on 1/3/15The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Yusuf/Cat Stevens exceeded expectations. He still has that recognizable, unique voice quality and range. His songs are beautiful tributes to our humanity and hopes for peace among all people. We loved hearing the new songs as well as the old. The concert was a great playlist of his career.

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens - wonderful

by AntBrad on 12/19/14The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

So glad there are still people like this making music. The newer songs sounded great - hadn't realised how really good some of them were until I heard them live, and the older songs were just...brilliant. The setting was great, small enough to get a personal feel, the sound was excellent, and the man & the music worthy of the status in which he is held - wonderful man and wondeful music.

  • Yusuf and team put on a magical show!

by MaryRoseSPGMOB on 12/18/14The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! Yusuf (Cat Stevens) and his band put on an excellent show at the Chicago Theatre and the entire audience was mesmerized! You could tell how happy everyone was to just be there. With talented musicians at his side, Yusuf flawlessly performed a nice mix of his new material with old favorites. Toward the end of the show, I jumped into the aisle to dance (and got immediately reprimanded). I know that "Cat Stevens" songs bring back a lot of special memories for many people, but it struck me that a many fans don't know him as Yusuf and may not have even bought his new music before attending the event. Yusuf does not like to perform "Wild World", but the fans demand it. It's been severely overplayed. How about coming out of the past and give some of his new stuff a chance? We listen to some of his stuff from the '90s and even some of the nasheeds that he has performed. As far as the theater goes, it is an extremely beautiful and elegant place and I liked seeing Yusuf in an intimate setting. For this event, we went through metal detectors to get in and no photography was allowed. So everyone had to put their phones into a plastic bag then get them back. Then there were 'bouncers' who ran around stopping people from taking pictures. People kept doing it. Why not just make them check their phones and there would be no need for bouncers? Also, Yusuf waited over a half hour for people to take their seats. We were in our seats on time, but while we were waiting we got up to get more drinks and people kept doing that. This is the midwest! We like to drink. I think an announcement to 'please take your seats' would have worked better. This was a once-in-a-lifetime show for my husband and me, and it was totally awesome and unforgettable!

Cat Stevens/Yusef concert was worth the wait. Excellent venue and acoustics were great. Best concert I've been to in years-even met Rod Stewart!!

  • Concert was Awesome!

    by Jetlag4 on 12/16/14Tower Theatre - Upper DarbyRating: 5 out of 5

I waited 38 years for this concert - many wondering if I'd ever get a chance to see Cat/Yusuf and it was worth the wait. His voice, the band, the sound were all awesome. While he is no longer a young man, he still looks great and appears to be at peace with himself. Probably one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The ticketless entry system definitely cut down on ticket scalping which is appreciated, however the Tower Theater was unprepared to deal with the entry system and people were forced to stand in line for up to an hour with many concert-goers not gaining entry until after the concert started, even though Cat delayed coming on stage for about 45 minutes.

  • Yusuf was a dream come true

by chazzie12 on 12/16/14Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I attended the Yusuf show on December 7, 2014 in Boston. My wife and I flew up from South Florida to see him. I was introduced to Cat Stevens' music in the early nineties while attending University. I instantly connected with the voice and the sound and most of all the message. As different from those who grew up with Cat, I don't long for the classics like "Wild World" and "Oh Very Young" as my introduction to Cat encompassed his entire collection. I long for all of his music, his beats and most of all his gentle voice. While understandable that this mini tour catered to his classics as it should, he played some of his new songs as well which are classics in and of themselves. Cat's transition to Yusuf was obviously necessary in his life, and from that Yusuf's music has become necessary in ours (or mine at least). I hope to see him again as I want more of the Roadsinger and to ultimately enjoy "Another Cup of Yusuf", or maybe two or three cups.

  • Concert of a lifetime!

by LifelongCatnowYusefFan on 12/15/14The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

He sounded fantastic. You'd never guess he wasn't back in his prime the way his voice was so strong and beautiful. Loved that he played some piano and not just guitar. He and the band were great together as well.

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens was great.

    by Dano2202 on 12/15/14The Masonic - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was excellent. Cat's voice was great. He played lots of classic songs. There were numerous standing ovations, not just when he entered the stage or at the end of the show and encore, but also after many of his songs, even ones that were situated within the middle of the set. The audience was really into this one and energy was contagious.

  • A beautiful return to the stage for Cat/Yusuf!

by BigfanofYusufCatStevens on 12/15/14The Masonic - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

40 years in the making, the return of Yusuf/Cat Stevens to the US was worth the wait. He sang all his classics, covered some beloved tunes, and introduced us to some new great songs. He sounded surprisingly good, and much better than what I've seen on YouTube in recent performances. The crowd was gracious and moved - many were in tears after being taken back to the anthems of their youth. I'm so glad Yusuf/Cat Stevens has reconciled his faith and his musical talents an is once again sharing his stories with the world. As he stated in the end "I hope it won't be another 40 years."

  • Cat still got it!

Excellent performance. Voice still strong enough to get it done. Played all the old favorites. Had fun playing R & B covers, some re-arranged. Wonderful night!

It was the best concert we have attended...... ever! The venue was perfect, the set was simple and meaningful. Yusuf sounded just like the Cat Stevens we all knew and loved. We felt a synergy with the crowd of beaming faces. Old and new songs were great and the band was wonderful.

A triumphant return to the stage. The show was a once in a lifetime experience. Yusuf, Alun Davies and the band made every moment special. Hearing the old Cat Stevens songs performed live was magical.
