Yuja Wang on Tour
Wang made her European concert debut in 2003, performing Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle; shortly after, she enjoyed her North American debut in a concert in Ottawa under the baton of Pinchas Zukerman. Her New York Philharmonic debut came in 2006, while, the following year, she performed Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto with Charles Dutoit and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has formed relationships with eminent conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas of the San Francisco Symphony and Zubin Mehta of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Wang has consistently wowed audiences with her mastery of the standard repertory, but she's upended the stereotype of a self-serious concert pianist with awe-inspiring versatility, spicing up her performances with comic flourishes, jazzy flair and even funky barrelhouse chops.
Yuja Wang in Concert
Chinese pianist Yuja Wang has taken the classical world by storm with her rhapsodic, thoughtful interpretations of music by composers like Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Chopin and Prokofiev. A Romantic through and through, her touch always gives way to airy melodies and textures that convey oceans of feeling. Born in Beijing in 1987, Wang took up piano at a young age, going to the Central Conservatory of Music in her hometown, and then as a teenager, attending the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She won prizes at the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists, the first Sendai International Music Competition in Japan and the Aspen Music Festival's concerto competition before beginning a lauded career as a touring soloist in the early 2000s. Signing to esteemed label Deutsche Grammophon, Wang would release a string of critically beloved records that situated her as an enduring force in the industry. Her first album, Sonatas & Etudes (2009), featured music by Chopin, Ligeti and Scriabin, and scored Wang a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance category; the following year, she released Transformation, which contained music by Stravinsky, Scarletti, Brahms and Ravel. She also recorded multiple Rachmaninoff albums, and has recorded with top conductors like Gustavo Dudamel and Claudio Abbado.

Absolutely awesome concert. She is one of the worlds eminent pianist and played one of the more difficult Piano Concertos. She brings it all, a very beautiful 28 year old.
Had a great time. Yuja Wang is a prodigious pianist and if you have a chance to see her perform live, do it. She played the Prokofiev flawlessly (or at least fantastically) and came back out for a little improvised encore. The LA Phil is a world-class orchestra and their playing was of course phenomenal. You can find samples of both groups' work on YouTube if you want to see what you're getting into before buying tickets.
This concert was over the top from start to finish. The orchestra was wonderful, as usual and Yuja Wang was amazing. We think she is the finest pianist out there today. She is technically perfect and it is obvious that she "feels" the music she is playing. She is a must hear performer! We came from AZ to hear this concert and Yuja in particular. The fireworks were just an added bonus and were beautifully suited to the music.
Most of the blame would have to rest with the composer, I suspect. If one were looking for something lyrical, I would advise to seek it elsewhere. Such pounding. Most of the way through the performance I leaned over and said to my friend, "Relentless, isn't it?" She agreed. But then sheer speed does little to impress me; musicality does. And Ms. Wang? Couldn't really say. The gown was impressive.
The entire program was excellent. Next time she performs in LA, don't miss it.
She really brought down the house with her 3rd encore of the Carmen fantasy. SHe went on to play 3 more encores. I loved the schubert D959 sonata.
She was amazing! Highly recommend. You don't want to miss her. Looking forward to seeing her again in the future.
Amazing pianist!!! There's no one better out there right now. And a joy to watch.
This was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Yuja Wang is a very gifted pianist, who seems to have an affinity for Russian music and Scriabin in particular. Since he is one of my favorite composers, I was delighted to hear her playing his music beautifully and with great energy and precision. I have heard her in concert four times now and she just keeps getting better.
The concert was amazing and very inspiring both to adult and young kids who are studying piano! The repertoire was great and showed the unbelievable technique and musicality of Yuja Wang. It was a first time I heard her and could definitely compare her to the greatest pianists of the past and current, such as Van Cliburn and Eugene Kissin.
Yuja Wang was amazing, incredible, unbelievable great! One of the best performances I have ever seen. NJ PAC was the perfect venue for her with it's great acoustics. She is not only a great performer but also a great entertainer. I would go to see her again and would highly recommend this to anyone.
This beautiful 24 year old pianist played a program that belied her young age. She was powerful and also had a beautiful singing line. Her understanding of the essence of three complicated composers, Scriabin, Prokofiev and Liszt, was amazing. She is one to be watched.
Ms. Wang is just plain amazing. This was not a flowing, calm style of playing, but vivacious and full of emotion and spirit. I constantly had to keep reminding myself that this was but *one* person at the keyboard, playing live, and nailing every single note. No sheet music needed; she just channeled it in a way I'm not sure was even possible. I can't believe she played all that with only two hands! lol I am SO glad we went, and I would for sure go again next time she comes to town. It was not a packed house, but it was a fully attentive and appreciative house, with standing ovations and even an encore. Yuja Wang is an absolute treat. Do not miss her if you have the chance to see her perform!
