About

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND IN CONCERT:

Yonder Mountain String Band has been a beloved source of boot-stomping, barn-burning bluegrass music ever since its inception in the late '90s. At their live shows the group peppers their progressive bluegrass numbers with improvisational flourishes reminiscent of jam bands like Phish, making for a rollicking concert experience that's never short on surprises. Original mandolin player Jeff Austin is no longer with the band but founding members Dave Johnston (banjo), Adam Aijala (guitar), and Ben Kaufman (bass) are still as sharp as ever, enlisting the help of a talented array of additional instrumentalists at their live shows. Whether they're fingerpicking their way through originals like "All the Time" or offering up creative covers of classics like "Jolene", Yonder Mountain String Band always delivers an authentic bluegrass experience anchored in stellar musicianship and no-frills fun.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Yonder Mountain String Band formed in Nederland, CO in 1998 after banjoist Dave Johnston and singer Jeff Austin, who previously played together in The Bluegrassholes, joined forces with bassist Ben Kaufman and guitarist Adam Aijala. The band made a name for themselves with their unique bluegrass-meets-jam band sound, and in 1999 they self-released their debut album Elevation. They quickly built a fanbase with their electrifying live performances, and in 2000 they kicked off a string of live releases with the album Mountain Tracks: Volume 1, which was recorded over two nights at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO. Since then they've been a constant presence on the bluegrass charts, making six Top 5 appearances including the chart-topping albums Mountain Tracks: Volume 5 (2008) and The Show (2009). In 2014 Austin left the band due to creative differences, but the group's stellar performances in his absence have left little doubt in fans' minds that Yonder Mountain String Band remains at the height of its powers.

    Incredible!!!

by jamfan47 on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

This show was amazing, best YMSB show I've been to yet. Xavier Rudd played a great opener that got everyone on the rocks groovin'. Yonder followed with a fantastic show which consisted of both classic as well as some of their new songs ( with no drum set! like their new album) some of which lasted 20 min+ of insane jamming!! The guys were hilarious and the atmosphere was something everyone there was grateful to be apart of. Overall a really incredible show that will have me going to as many more shows as I can!

YMSB with Xavier Rudd made for an epic concert!

by NoahD on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

With Xavier Rudd opening, the mood was set early. The dancing started early, and Xavier played a stellar jam with the didgeridoos toward the end of his set. YMSB kicked off with some classics getting the crowd into it right off the bat. They worked in new material throughout the show as well as working in some jams. They were certainly into the show and the venue and played a stellar concert.

    YMSB is the best!

by Daisybee on 8/18/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

Younder Mountain never disappoints and this time was no exception. Too bad the lightning ended the show early, but at least they got to play as long as the did. Jeff Austin's skills are unmatched!! Can't wait to see them again....and again....

by Malachei on 8/17/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

Yondre Mountain gret even in the rain

by scatpac on 8/17/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

Rain shortened event. My only complaint where was the fiddle player from the April San Francisco concert. If you attended both shows you felt you missed something.

    Yonder Mountain String Band--just excellent

by fennario on 8/17/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

The group was outstanding and really seemed into it as was the crowd. The outdoor setting at the Zoo Amphitheater was fabulous ---looking out at the water. Unfortunately that was the problem--rain. The band was playing through it but then the lightning started and they had to cut it off at that point. But they were excellent. Definitely worth seeing and worth traveling to see. Looking forward to their new release on Sept 1.

    MN Love for YMSB

by Zarakowski on 8/17/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

Yonder played a fantastic show at an amazing venue. The crowd was loving it, and everyone was grooving. Unfortunately the weather blew in and cut the show off after about 4 songs into the second set. Jeff Austin stayed out for awhile and hung out with the crowd — no doubt they would've come back and played their hearts out if they could have.

Best show I've seen in years!

by wunders on 8/17/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

I must admit that I actually bought the tickets to see Xavier Rudd, who wasn't able to make it. Not being super familiar with Yonder Mountain, I was hoping for the best and they far exceeded my expectations... in fact this was the best show I've seen in years! These guys really know how to jam. Despite the rain and a longer setlist that originally anticipated, Yonder Mountain String Band has what it takes to turn a live performance into something magical. I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

    Jjoan Osborne: Soul Music Phoenix

by 6345789 on 7/18/09Erie Canal Harbor - Buffalo

Joan Osborne has a strong distinctive voice that can recreate the magic of all the old tunes. So many of the original artists have aged and lost their voice but Joan can recreate their wonderful songs. She should reunite with the Funk Brothers and do some concerts that can preserve these classics on a BluRay concert disc before these musicians are gone. Her own songs are good but its the old tunes that really get the crowd excited. There is a tremendous potential to bring this music to the public if Joan performed on a national tour. Just don't wait too long, those "old guys" won't be around forever.

    Yonder is awesome!

by hillcountrygirl on 7/17/09Revolution Hall - Troy

This was such a great show! Rev Hall is tiny and so it was a very intimate show and you really felt like you were right next to them. Awesome setlist!

    Yonder rocked the Peak- Again

by Yonderer on 7/16/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

As always when Yonder brings there energized bluegrass jam band to town- we win! Not only do they hit their classics but they did a 20 minute tribute to MJ-complete with white glove. Nothing like a 3 hour aerobic dance session with a thousand of your friends. And the Peak is always a great venue for tailgating and the views are incredible from the deck.
