About

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND IN CONCERT:

Yonder Mountain String Band has been a beloved source of boot-stomping, barn-burning bluegrass music ever since its inception in the late '90s. At their live shows the group peppers their progressive bluegrass numbers with improvisational flourishes reminiscent of jam bands like Phish, making for a rollicking concert experience that's never short on surprises. Original mandolin player Jeff Austin is no longer with the band but founding members Dave Johnston (banjo), Adam Aijala (guitar), and Ben Kaufman (bass) are still as sharp as ever, enlisting the help of a talented array of additional instrumentalists at their live shows. Whether they're fingerpicking their way through originals like "All the Time" or offering up creative covers of classics like "Jolene", Yonder Mountain String Band always delivers an authentic bluegrass experience anchored in stellar musicianship and no-frills fun.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Yonder Mountain String Band formed in Nederland, CO in 1998 after banjoist Dave Johnston and singer Jeff Austin, who previously played together in The Bluegrassholes, joined forces with bassist Ben Kaufman and guitarist Adam Aijala. The band made a name for themselves with their unique bluegrass-meets-jam band sound, and in 1999 they self-released their debut album Elevation. They quickly built a fanbase with their electrifying live performances, and in 2000 they kicked off a string of live releases with the album Mountain Tracks: Volume 1, which was recorded over two nights at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO. Since then they've been a constant presence on the bluegrass charts, making six Top 5 appearances including the chart-topping albums Mountain Tracks: Volume 5 (2008) and The Show (2009). In 2014 Austin left the band due to creative differences, but the group's stellar performances in his absence have left little doubt in fans' minds that Yonder Mountain String Band remains at the height of its powers.

    Loved Yonder on the Rocks!

by Garemom on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Although I was older than most Yonder fans at the concert, I loved seeing so many college-age people loving the same music that I do. I can't imagine a bad concert at Red Rocks; the setting is so amazing. The band mentioned several times how awe-inspiring it was to be there on such a beautiful Colorado night, and their music and presence only gave the night more magic!

by gr8tfulpix on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Xavier made the crowd ready and Yonder finished us off! This was the best show I have seen. The crowd was into it, both bands included us. They gave us free food, free music and a show that would be etched in our memories for a life time. Thank you YMSB and Xavier. It was awesome.

    Ben Kaufman stole the show

by JPage10 on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

I'm not a huge YMSB fan (even though i've seen them 4 times), but this show blew my socks off. What I loved: Ben Kaufman(bass) the dynamic b/t Kaufman & Aijala(guitar) parts of the light show Austin(mando) played better than he usually does. Austin didn't hog the show, like he often does. They played a bit late for the usual Red Rocks curfew What I didn't like: Dave Johnson(banjo) played very poorly the very very erratic strobes. those fast strobes at the same time as Austin's super fast and equally erratic mandolin playing can make you go plain insane. i expected more from the crowd. i guess all the best colorado crowd was at NedFest, but Red Rocks still threw a party

    yonder!!!

by greensween on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Great show! Rudd's opening show was pretty amazing with his traditional outback sound. Thanks to the folks at Red Rocks (best venue in the world!) for allowing Yonder to play into the wee hours of the morning. And I should mention that the folks attending the concert are some of the most easy-going, laid back and fun people you'll find at a concert.

    Yonder rocked!

by TaraSue on 8/29/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

It was a perfect night at Red Rocks for a concert. Warm and breezy, the skyline was incredible and the half moon shown bright over the rocks. Xavier Rudd got the night started and warmed us up with his magical blend of digeridoo, rythyms, and positive lyrics. Then Yonder took the stage and brought down the house, rockin the bluegrass all night long and stirring the crowd into a dancing frenzy.
