The Wizard of Oz on Tour

Audiences have been going off to see The Wizard of Oz since 1902, when the first musical adaptation of L. Frank Baum's novel premiered at the Chicago Grand Opera House.

Published to general acclaim in 1900, Baum's children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sold more than 3 million copies and introduced readers to Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch of the East, the Good Witch of the North, and the Wizard himself. After writing "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale," as the Library of Congress characterized it, Baum went on to write 13 Oz sequels.

When he wrote his 1902 musical adaptation, Baum replaced Toto with a cow named Imogene, introduced new characters (including the waitress Trixie Tryfle and the loopy Cynthia Cynch), and deleted the Wicked Witch of the West – who reappeared in a 1910 silent-film adaptation of Baum's book before starring in her own hit stage musical some nine decades later.

One of the greatest movies ever made, the 1939 MGM Technicolor musical version of The Wizard of Oz was directed by Victor Fleming (who left mid-production to take over Gone With the Wind) and starred Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, and the Singer Midgets as the Munchkins. It won Academy Awards for Best Music and Best Original Song ("Over the Rainbow"). Garland, 16, garnered a special honorary Academy Juvenile Award for her unforgettable portrayal of Dorothy Gale.

The Wizard of Oz became part of America's cultural DNA between 1956, when it was first broadcast on network television, and 2005, which marked the last nearly annual network broadcast before it moved exclusively to cable.

There have been plenty of other notable Wizard of Oz musical adaptations. A 1959 Holiday on Ice rendition. The Afrocentric 1975 musical The Wiz. The Royal Shakespeare Company's 1995 concert performance featuring Jewel as Dorothy, Roger Daltrey as the Scarecrow, and Jackson Browne as the Tin Woodman. And of course Wicked, which has dazzled Broadway audiences since 2003.

But never fear: A magical time is guaranteed no matter which musical version of The Wizard of Oz you're off to see.

Just OK, could have production improvement

by TonyGM on 2/14/18McAllen Performing Arts Center - McAllen

Did I enjoy? Yes, but it was a regular show which in my opinon lacked more audience interaction, jokes and production. The venue is amazing and looks well equipped, but sitting in first Mezzanine sound was lacking. Production of scenes were ok and the acting from the Lion was basically the best part of the show. They threw in a couple jokes but need to maintain more attention as I saw most of the audience in the same condition as we were. I have been to many plays, many on road plays and this seemed like a well produced highschool play or an average produced Broadway. It leaves a lot of room for improvement, it's OK to watch and loved the Venue will definitely be back to see more plays.

by MateodeRotaeo on 2/14/18McAllen Performing Arts Center - McAllen

For starters the orchestra was fantastic! The singing by the scarecrow was awesome! The choreography was great as well. My only complaint was the venue, not enough bathrooms.

    Too late

by Ozno on 2/10/18Thalia Mara Hall - Jackson

They only viewing was on a Wednesday night (church and school night) and it didn’t start until 7:30 and then the cast was 15 minutes later starting. We had to leave at halftime because everyone was sleepy by then and had school the next morning. So no I would not do that again! In saying all of that, on a good note, the lion was great! My husband and grandchildren enjoyed him the most also! He was just like the original character sounded.

    Simply Amazing!

by LaceyLou22 on 2/9/18Heymann Performing Arts Center - Lafayette

I can’t even explain how amazing this performance was! The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favorite movies. The actress for Dorothy was spot on! She was adorable and sounded JUST like Judy Garland. Glenda the Good Witch of the North was absolutely beautiful! Dorothy’s friends were so funny and genuine. I would definetly recommend this Broadway production to anyone! Adults alone or adults with their little ones! GO SEE IT! You won’t regret it!

    What?!? No yellow brick road

by IDontNeedANicknameEither on 2/9/18Heymann Performing Arts Center - Lafayette

The acting was mediocre at best. The stage was too small. And there was no yellow brick road. Nothing else to say.

    Handicap inaccsessible

by SADSEATING on 2/10/16San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

i paid over $290 for seats in the second row. I looked for "HANDICAP SEATING" on Ticketmaster's sight, and found nothing applicable, so i ignorantly thought i would be able to get to the seats, somehow. I wanted my 83 year old Dad to be immersed in the play, up close, but it was impossible to get him to the seats. The theater did accommodate us with "handicap seating," but it was just about in the very last row of the theater! So my nearly $300 seats turned into $49 seats! As i have not spoken with Ticketmaster about this, and probably won't, if Ticketmaster reads this and would like to make it up to me, i would appreciate that, but i would like more to SEE A LINK FOR HANDICAP SEATING! The play was OK, and I even got a few laughs out of my Dad, but I am VERY disappointed in Ticketmaster for NOT PROVIDING ANY INFO TOWARD HANDICAP SEATING... I had to prop my fathers head up the entire time so he could look down toward the stage. If you want to experience this play, I suggest you get tickets down front, especially if you're older and cant see very well, as the effects looked like they were so much better down front.
