Jason Samuels Smith, what a talent!

by Anonymous on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

My husband and I attended this performance for our 36th anniversary. I take tap classes and will go to anything involving tap. Needless to say I thought it was absolutely amazing. I wasn't really sure how my husband felt until it was over. His reaction was "I have never seen so many talented people on one stage." He also said that he could see that show once a month!

JSS and crew should visit PDX all the time!

by taphat on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

i was truly impressed by this performance. each dancer and musician could in fact hold their own, as Jason stated, yet also work really well together to put on a cohesive performance. i appreciate that the performance as well as the crowd was more diverse than many shows in the downtown theaters. i was excited and pleased with the tapdancing, but the jazz and rapping brought it up another notch. the solo singer not so much. but, the talent and originality really blew me away.

The review in the Sat., Dec. 4, 2010 Oregonian newspaper was 'spot on'. It was a wonderful performance. I'm not a tap dance person -- no personal experience. But I was in total awe of the dancers abilities and skills as well as artistry. Well done!

    Screaming Guitars!

by CaseyWood on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

This Tap Dance Show was the equivalent of a 2 hour screaming rock guitar solo. These blazing feet never slowed down, never gave us a pianissimo or let up on the driving beat. They are all amazing dancers. The foot dexterity and pure energy output was phenomenal. What athletes! The performance all ran together as one number due to that guitar solo quality. Their enthusiasm and youthful strength were dazzling. As the company gains more maturity I suspect we will see a more interesting show with variety and depth of subtlety. As the company grows I will enjoy watching how the presentation deepens and broadens. For now it was a wow of speed, sound, and athleticism. The musicians were talented and I loved their sound, totally enjoyed their "spine" of the performance. They fortunately did understand the value of variety and gave us some quiet moments and some time change ups. More is not always better but it does give standing ovations sometimes.

It was a great performance!!! I wondered how they were going to do it without an intermission. They did a great job of periodically interspersing comedy, friendliness, and music. The skill of all the dancers was impressive. .

    Tremendous Energy

by Vips on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

Very impressive. I would have given it 5 stars except for a little rap segment which really had nothing to do with tap. The dancing was fantastic, the jazz band excellent, although I thought the "musical interlude" was a little long for a tap show.

    Jason Samuel Smith exceptional!

    by lmont2222 on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

Jason Samuel Smith with his entourage of 4 amazing tappers and live jazz trio was exceptional entertainment. Thank you for bringing this amazing group of tappers to White Bird Dance. The live jazz trio that Jason brought to tap with could have been a show unto themselves.

    amazing tap

by katiedidtoo on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

All of the dancers were incredible and I enjoyed watching the men, but could hardly take my eyes off the women. As they were wearing sleek tights, it was so much easier to follow their footwork than that of the men in their pants. The rap did not really fit in the program, but was mercifully short. The drummer is undeniably a virtuoso, but somewhat overpowered the piano and bass at times, which was unfortunate.

Jason Samuels Smith & His Crew Rocked the House!!

by makateo on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

Wow, I had no idea that a Tap performance could be so engaging...even if you do not know the first thing about tap dancing. I took my daughter (a current tap student) and her friend and they LOVED it. The best part was when my daughter started tap dancing in her seat. She was really inspired and I was totally entertained! More tap please.....

    Great performance!

by EvaKG on 12/6/10Newmark Theatre - Portland

Each of the dancers brought his/her own unique style and energy along with amazing talent and discipline. They also played off of each other in a way that made the whole more than the sum of the parts. The musicians were incredible--so much skill and precision along with great energy and an ability to work with the dancers. Overall an invigorating and uplifting experience!

A splendid evening for the eyes, and for the mind!

by Geopeter on 11/12/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

The Martha Graham Dance Company performance the other night will remain a lovely memory for us. I knew little about the history and development of modern dance and bought the tickets because of my partner's interest in the performance. However, as the evening unfolded we witnessed a history of modern dance and the role of Martha Graham in its growth and development. The performers were capable, energetic and attractive. The dance company was able to present the historic highpoints of Martha Graham's career, without allowing them to take over the artistic and visual beautiy of the dance itself. For me the result was that the performers, the narration, and the bits of old film worked together beautifully to reveal the importance of Martha Graham as the source of so much of what we understand to be modern dance and choreography. It was an evening that stirred the emotions and the mind, and just made you feel good as you left the theater and walked out into the rainy evening of Portland in November.

    Martha Graham Never Fails

by SkippersMom on 11/11/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Once again the Martha Graham Dance Company put on a fantastic performance. This is the 2nd time I have seen them and I was again amazed at the talent, grace and strength of the dancers. Janet Eilber does a wonderful job of putting together a program that not only entertains but gives the audience an insight to Martha Graham and her phenomenal talent. I brought 2 friends and they were very impressed and enjoyed the program immensely. I will definitely go to another Martha Graham event!
