About

The national tour of WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME, Heidi Schreck’s Tony Award-nominated Pulitzer Prize finalist play, directed by Oliver Butler, will return to Chicago this fall starring Cassie Beck (The Humans, “Shameless”) in the leading role. Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. Schreck’s timely and galvanizing play, became a sensation off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2018 before transferring to Broadway in 2019 and receiving two Tony Award® nominations among countless other accolades. The New York Times hailed it as “not just the best play on Broadway, but also the most important.”

  • Great Play, not great audio

by Bern on 11/10/21Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

There was a group of 6 of us attending this play. We loved the play; however, we missed a fair amount of dialogue because the actors' voices were not amplified in any way whatsoever. So when an actor spoke softly or was not faced in our direction, it was very difficult to hear. I would not attend a play like this again unless we have assurances that the actors are wearing microphones or that there is some other amplification.

Great food for thought. Definitely kindles the fire!

  • Skip this one

Heavy-handed. Boring. The concept of a one-woman show doesn’t really work when it’s not the original woman any more.

  • Excellent Show - Excellent Venue

This show is excellent. I don't like using the word "educational" but in this case I will. Thought provoking and fun. This venue is really nice. Large lobby with easy access restrooms, sight lines in the house are all pretty good, semi-stadium seating, and comfortable spacing.

Great performances. Love the show and the message. The debater at the end was a little hard to understand but the actress playing Heidi was fantastic as was the legionnaire

I took my pre-teen and my teen and I'm so glad I did! There are some challenging topics that might be difficult for some adolescents, but boy did we have some great conversations afterwards. The performances were fantastic, and we really loved the end.

  • Thought provoking

The cast was perfect and what's apparent is it's all true. The summary of the who, what in writing and enforcing the Constitution is sobering. Thanks for airing these great thought provoking issues, and having a little fun.
