More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it's back, and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. Directed by David Saint, using Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents' Broadway direction, West Side Story remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. Loved show. Took our grandchildren as we loved the original cast in NYC when we were young. We were very pleased that the basic show was not changed very much and that the music and dance maintained the original show.

    West side Good show!

by Me1212 on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Nice, quality show. Very enjoyable! Beautiful theatre. A couple of Critisms however, The audio was very thin and bright. Needed more volume and fullness. It took 2 1/2 hours to drive in from Elgin. All in all it was a good evening!

West Side Story hard to understand!

by Barbiedoll203 on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The two main female characters (Maria & Anita) were VERY hard to understand!!! Missed out on several important scenes. They didn't enunciate well enough!! Venue was terrible! Attendants/ushers were RUDE!!!!! Would never want to return to the Oriental.

    Energetic and nostalgic

by Ka48 on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Wonderful dancing , enough actors to feel like groups of people filling the stage, great orchestra, wonderful music of course and charming lead actors if not as strong as they might have been. Would have given rave reviews if tickets hadn't been in 80 dollar range...use another venue or bring in talent to warrant prices.

The voices were amazing and Tony and Maria were breathtaking! All the choreography, dancing and songs were out of this world! I would recommend everyone to see it! It deserves a Tony!

    Wonderful Music

by indiana62 on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I enjoyed West Side Story..My only complaint was the inability to understand the actors at some points. The singing was wonderful, but I could not always tell what they were singing...I enjoyed the Spanish lyrics. The dancing was fabulous.

Very hard to understand the words. Too graphic for my taste. Had this been the first musical I had ever seen, I wouldn't go to another one. Thank goodness I have seen some really good shows in the past. Definitely don't recommend bringing your teenage daughter

West Side Story: Tonight was merely 'alright.'

by Oakley140 on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Using 2 letters or less, I would describe this production of West Side Story as merely 'OK.' The overwhelming majority of the performers are still exceptionally young in their careers, and so that must be taken into consideration. Having said that, I kept waiting for an impressive, stand-out moment; a break-away star, and which never seemed to materialize. "America", "I Feel Pretty", and "Tonight" lacked the all-too-important Wow Factor. The choreography was impressive; especially during the "Mambo" dance sequence in the gymnasium, and I wish more scenes would have built upon that momentum, pushing the story forward. Although conflict, love, passion, and betrayal are woven so tightly into this timeless tale, the performers seemed to hold back from truly 'owning' their characters. Some lines felt forced, some notes felt forced, and the pent-up conflict and pressure of two rivalry gangs which should have resulted in the equivalent of a high speed highway blow-out , simply ended as if one had merely run over a rusty nail. Perhaps most telling, is that the audience failed to give the cast a standing ovation. The potential is there, however, and although the production was 99% there, it lacked the synergy needed to give the audience the 110% they were expecting.

Enjoyed show. We felt the female leads were a bit weak. Their dialog was hard to understand.

    Almost wonderful but very entertaining

by kobesan on 6/16/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I usually cut some slack as long as the overall feeling is that I was truly entertained but I have to say that the two leads, Tony and Maria, left me wanting more. The voices were in tune and pleasant sounding but lacked punch and power. I wanted the big numbers to be belted out with feeling but although they tried, they were drowned out by the orchestra which was not playing overly loud, but just right. Anita was fantastic and the rest of the troupe were excellent. Patrons make the effort to go out for the evening, make it downtown, park, eat, and of course pay for this event. We are excited with anticipation for the show. We do not expect to be let down in the least, and yet we were.

    Entertaining Revival

by tapmajor on 6/15/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Too much Spanish in a speedy dialog made connection to story and characters difficult for this attendee. Excellent performance by Anita (Michelle Alves).

Worst production we ever paid for

by bdw1 on 6/15/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Left at the first intermission, too painful to go on. The performers could not sing or dance! A high school production.

Love West Side Story...but this one, not so much.

by mizzk2u on 6/15/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The character Anita, the dancing, and the songs I just absolutely loved but besides that this West Side Story was a disappointment. The entire musical had awkward transitions; lacking a smooth flow from scene to scene. They were so obvious and abrupt; there were times when the audience was confused about whether they should clap or not trying to judge if a scene was over or not. Also, Tony and Maria had no chemistry what so ever; the actors did not make me believe in their love. They could sing but were not compelling. Actually, the two were pretty boring. Luckily, all the other actors were interesting and emotionally believable or else this West Side Story would have been a real flop. I hope the next time I see this musical I can give a better review.

by seawatch on 6/15/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

It was wonderful to hear the beautiful songs again. West Side Story was such a beautiful movie and long wonderful to see it made into a play after all these years. It was a favorite of mine and the play brought it all bad. Great music, dancing and acting.

    Enjoyed West Side Story

by Gerhild on 6/15/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Hadn't seen it in decades. The music was great, the sound was okay, and the singing and dancing totally enjoyable. Even though it seems dated, it was great.
