More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it's back, and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. Directed by David Saint, using Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents' Broadway direction, West Side Story remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway's finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."
Thoroughly enjoyed the performance! All characters were well cast with Anita being superb. This show will never get old.
The musical brought back memories, but offered new ones as well! Great talent! Maria had the voice of an angel. Wonderful dancers and singers and perfect set made this a fun and enjoyable event:-)
I wasn't sure if they would be able to capture all of my favs from the movie, but they did a great job doing so. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who grew up watching The West Side Story!
Good performance over all of all actors however it is just not my cup of tea. That is the only reason i would not go over and out of my way to recommended for a must see show.
Overall the production was OK. I was disappointed that the dialog and songs were sung in both English and Spanish. The original production was primarily in English. If I spoke Spanish I would have been able to understand what was being said. Like I said, I was disappointed that the production didn't stay true to the original. Unlike movies and television, live theater doesn't have subtitles.
Energetic cast and performance. Sound could be better, it was hard to hear and understand some of the dialoge and singing. They really need to improve the sound to the Balcony areas.
This has always been, in my mind, the quintessential American musical. The Chicago production was simply wonderful, the actors, their voices, the dancing, the orchestra and settings were near perfect. Also, the Oriental Theater is a great place to see the show.
Story is dated and does not translate to 2013. Cast is talented, but not enough to make up for dated material.
I loved the fresh new feel to this revival. The cast was very good. The scenic design was lovely.
This production chose to make a few decisions that I found confusing. There was a lot of Spanish mixed into scenes that really were not necessary. It felt as if there was a line in Spanish and then the line was again repeated in English and it became extremely distracting simply because when people sing it is at times hard to understand what they are saying, but if you don't know what language you are trying to decipher, it makes it even harder. The "America" song scene was changed and that was absolutely the worst decision that was made. Instead of going back and forth between the girls and the Sharks, we instead get a back and forth between a girl and the rest of the girls. Taking one of the best scenes and destroying it. Also the acting was fine, but not one person stood out. They were all good but no one was great. I was a little disappointed, I did not feel this was up to Chicago theater standards.
Strong performances by this touring company. Good staging and sound. Excellent vocals by female secondary leads.
I was sadly disappointed at the quality of the actors/singers/dancers' performance on Saturday. After watching So You Think You Can Dance, there are so many dancers who can do triple twists out there that would pay to be in a performance like this. The dancing was boring. Anita was the only character who had a great voice. And the characters were not convincing. I realize Tony is a straight-forward, goody two shoes boy, but he was not "cool". No one in our group liked him. I also did not like how Spanish was in the singing so much. My daughter, granddaughter and myself do not understand Spanish. I felt we lost a lot of the lyrics and messages in the songs. It was also difficult to understand the actors. I don't know if it was the Spanish accents but my granddaughter who is 15 years old was completely lost and understandably bored. New cast for Broadway!!!!!
Great Dancing and singing - one of my favorites. Especially enjoyed Maria and Anita.
Excellent!!! We really enjoyed this musical. Dancing and singing was amazing!
This was an awesome play. We had great seats and the sound was great too.
Wonderful ! An unforgettable evening.!!! An amazing cast with a musical score impossible to forget.
Everyone was fantastic. The orchestra was incredible. The dancing was unbelievable! And I liked the little addition to the number "A Time For Us" that included Velma. Everything was fantastic!
Please to NOT display raping in a musical children go to. It is not right to do that. Also do NOT show "jerking off". That was unnecessary plus not right for children to see. Why ruin a wonderful musical.
good songs. good choreography. set was good. all good except the seat i was sitting on hit the stairway rail, so my leg got cramped up.
Character who played Tony needs to work on voice support. Choreography was awesome. Characters who played Bernardo and his girl friend excellent. Maria above average.
