Wayne Newton in Concert
The always suave Wayne Newton is — and will always be — Mr. Las Vegas. The classic crooner and entertainer even has a road named after him at Vegas' international airport. A consummate performer, Newton has been charming audiences since he was a kid, singing alongside his older brother Jerry. Once the young siblings made their way to Vegas — where they began performing six shows a night, six nights a week — Wayne was on his way to becoming a legend. Over the next several decades, Newton would solidify his VIP status, transforming from the boyish singer of the ‘60s to the debonair Mr. Entertainer of Vegas. He came to dominate Sin City, at one point becoming its highest paid performer. In total, he's logged over 30,000 live shows and counting. The King of Vegas continues his rule, presiding over Cleopatra's Barge at Caesars Palace with his intimate show, Wayne Newton: Up Close and Personal, in which he sings his biggest hits, shares his favorite stories and invites the audience to ask him anything.
Wayne Newton Background
Wayne Newton has been a star nearly all his life. Born Carson Wayne Newton in 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia, the young singer took to music early, learning how to play piano and guitar starting at age six. As his family moved around the country, from Ohio to Arizona, Wayne and his older brother Jerry honed their stage skills at local clubs and fairs. Their show eventually caught the eye of a booking agent, who invited the brothers to perform in Vegas in 1958. There, the sibling duo impressed crowds night after night for five years. Newton also made waves on the national level, performing on The Jackie Gleason Show and acting on the western TV hit Bonanza. In his early twenties, he was landing singles on the charts, including his signature version of "Danke Schoen" and "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" (still favorites at his performances). He was prolific throughout the 1960s and 1970s, releasing multiple albums nearly every year and scoring another big hit with 1972's "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast." By the mid '70s, Newton was already shedding his baby-faced image and fast becoming Vegas' must-see event. Decades later, he still reigns as Mr. Vegas, bringing in fans — young and old — to see the living legend do what he was born to do: entertain.
The Tennessee theater is beautiful and the people were terrific
I had a great time. The show was very entertaining.
Wayne always give a great show. We have enjoyed him for over 40 years.
Wayne Newton is AMAZING! His show business history is so incredible. I've never seen an entertainer who can make you feel like you know him just by seeing his show. His level of entertainment is above all others and, sadly, a dying art. Thankful to have seen the show!
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen Wayne Newton perform in person. What I can tell you is that I saw him in person for the first time in 1975 and I’ve gone to so many of his shows because he does the best job of making the audience laugh and enjoy his talent! He comes out smiling and singing and when I look around the audience, everyone is smiling right back at him. It’s very obvious that he always works to give the audience a memorable evening.
I met Wayne outside the Ryman before he went inside. He and his wife were so nice and we took a photo together. He tells his life story basically (quickly) through his relocations and songs and other entertainers he meets. It’s fast paced. He was always engaged and never seemed to slip up on what he was trying to say. He remembered all of his routines. Of course he’s 81 and his voice shakes and breaks sometimes. Also he can be hard to hear sometimes. But the crowd was into it. Wayne was definitely happy to be there. So glad I got to see Wayne newton!
It was more of a retrospective than anything else. Lots of clips from his career over the years. Music was far too loud and either he Couldn’t sync up with the music or the music was just too fast. I guess my wife and I were expecting a concert but it was just a bunch of his career highlights with a few songs in the mix. I love Wayne Newton and his music but to say we were disappointed would be an understatement.
I thought he would have sung more songs. I did however learn about his life
Enjoyed Wayne's trip down memory lane. So much talent. Loved the music and his engaging spirit. Would love to see him again!
Fantastic show on such a personable level. If your not a fan when you walk in, you will certainly leave as one.
Amazing to have Mr. Las Vegas in your town. Wonderful show. Such Talent. Knows how to play 13 instruments really well!. Wayne has been in entertainment since he was 15 years old, on the stage, in television and movies, and has sung and appeared with thee top names from the industry. People often attend a show and wonder about certain songs or the entertainers life. Wayne has dedicated so much of his life entertaining us, and in his show - he genuinely shares so much of himself, his heart, and stories from along the way. We all loved it. Great show to see.
Wayne was my teenage idol. I listened to him while doing homework. I had seen him at Blinstrub's in Boston. He got married on my 21st birthday and I was crushed. This event brought back many memories. Thank you 🤟
Wayne Newton brought his Up Close and Personal show to Lynn, Massachusetts. His old concerts were song after song. This Up Close show is Wayne telling the story of his life and career. It is in a more intimate setting. Yes he still sings but just a bit less. Yes he still plays multiple instruments. This multi media show is not a bad thing because his story is so unique, He shows old videos and still photos of himself with Bobby Darin, Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin. There are Elvis and Frank Sinatra stories. He sings a duet with the late Sammy Davis Jr. There is a great video with Glen Campbell. These stories are history because who else can tell them? The show's pacing is done with the aid of Mrs. Newton who is on stage and asks Wayne questions. She is very attractive and even sings some backup vocals. Newton is 81 in 2023 BUT has been a performer since he was 5 years old. When he closed the show with My Way I saw tears in the eyes of many. His is quite a life. These days everyone is called a "legend". The word has become overused. If you get a chance go see Wayne Newton because he is a real legend. Mr. Las Vegas isn't done yet.
Wayne Newton was charming. He reviewed his life story with the entertainment industry & even one of our party who initially was not a fan was completely enthralled. The voice may not be as strong, but the charisma & charm of this entertainer definitely was. I would highly recommend this show. Bought the nightshirt.
Yes, Wayne may be getting older but he still gives one HELL of a great show! He sings, tells stories, and shares pictures and videos of his amazing life... and this show is almost his swan song. I highly HIGHLY recommend it...
Wayne's stories and reminisces were unforgettable. The long-ago videos, especially with Glen Campbell and Sammy Davis Jr., were extraordinary. All the music was excellent.
He was very entertaining with Mr. Las Vegas last night. I like it very much.
This venue seats 100 people so there isn’t a bad seat anywhere. The chairs however are a bit uncomfortable unless you are in the back row as it has padded backs. Wayne isn’t much of a singer anymore but he still puts on a great show - he offers stories, videos and answers questions from the audience. Show is about an hour and a half and so glad we went.
Show was fun and playful. I learned interesting facts about Wayne’s early career that I didn’t know. We enjoyed hearing about the early days in Vegas with all the greats-as well as his experience in Vegas Vacation. It was kitschy but a great time! He’s very talented with instruments and very entertaining.
He was one class act. love the story telling about his past and present. A show well worth the price he was totally fantastic period every minute .
