Beautiful course and a definite party vibe at the Phoenix Open! At least 1/3 of the people attending seemed to be interested in golf..... Easy to find a place to get fairly close to your favorite golfer, except on hole 16! Certainly a different experience from the other PGA events that I've attended, and worth it.

About
Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale
Each winter, the best players in golf descend upon the Grand Canyon State to participate in the legendary Phoenix Open. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is conducted on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, which opened in 1987 specifically to host this event. The Phoenix Open is famous for its rowdy setting, and for being the most widely attended event on the PGA Tour. The 2020 edition, taking place from January 30 to February 2, coincides with the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series from January 29 to February 1, featuring such acts as Miranda Lambert, G-Eazy, Dierks Bentley and Kygo.
Waste Management Phoenix Open History
The first Arizona Open was held at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1932, and then off and on until the mid 1940s. Bob Goldwater Sr. helped keep the tournament alive after it was discontinued from 1936 to 1938, and the 1939 tournament, which featured Byron Nelson defeating Ben Hogan by 12 strokes, was the turning point that made what was by then known as the Phoenix Open into a must-see attraction on the PGA Tour. Some of the greatest legends in golf have made their mark in the Phoenix Open. Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia and Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson have all won three times at the event. Other notable winners include Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh, and 2016 and 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama.
Since 1973, the Phoenix Open has coincided with Super Bowl weekend, leading to some scheduling quirks when nearby Tempe or Glendale hosts the big game. The scheduling conflict has also affected its coverage, leading to a unique agreement where NBC airs the tournament when CBS airs the Super Bowl, and CBS airs the Honda Classic in years where NBC airs the Winter Olympics. The 1976 edition, in which Bob Gilder won his first PGA tournament, was watched by over 22 million people as the lead-out program to Super Bowl X on CBS. In 1997, only a few months before wowing the world at the Masters, Tiger Woods hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. In 2019, Rickie Fowler won by two strokes over South African Branden Grace.

by janiesydney on 2/3/14TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleWell organized-easy to navigate to the holes. The 16th Hole was the best. I would recommend that the concession stand would have a better selection of food! Otherwise, a perfect day and so much fun!!!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Great golf and fun
by ChefJB on 2/7/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleThe golf course is very spectator friendly. They need to work on the shuttle bus plan at exit time tho. Stage more buses somehow. The line is way too long

by Chicagocubsguy on 2/5/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleIf you want to see some incredible shot making go. This was my first ever pro golf tournament and it was a blast. I went on sunday so crowds weren't as big as Saturday, and still made it home to watch Super Bowl in full. Also we got on TV with Phil Mickelson.

Rating: 2 out of 5 Waste Management (Problem Security Sucks)
by JasonASU on 2/4/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleThe security at the event was horrible. Waited on a line for 3 hours just to be cut by some drunk underage children. The security had no idea how to handle the situation and everyone in line was pissed off. Very un-professional. Other than a wasted 3 hours (did not even get in), the event was fun for the atmosphere. I would give it another try.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 2/4/13TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale Extremely exciting event. The 16th hole was worth the trip.
Rating: 2 out of 5 too much of a party atmosphere
by golflover209 on 2/4/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleWe would not go back. The venue was gorgeous, and we did get to see some golf because we arrived relatively early, but by about noontime the crowds were too large to permit easy access to many of the spectator-favorite holes, and I would guess at least half the people in attendance, many of whom appeared to be college-age, had no interest in the golf at all and looked at the event as one big block party. This attitude is actually encouraged by the relatively low ticket prices with no limit to the number sold, the free-flowing beer, and the raucousness surrounding the 16th hole that this tournament is so famous for and which sometimes carries over to other holes. Our no-interest-in-golf suspicion was actually confirmed, in a very minor way, in a conversation we had with a waitress at a local restaurant we went to right afterwards who saw the ticket that I had taken off of my shirt and set on the table. She said, "I have a friend who is going to that, and she doesn't know anything about golf." We had originally planned/hoped to watch some on-course golf in the morning and then go over to the 16th hole and watch a few drives and the corresponding cheering or booing. Never happened. The 16th is completely surrounded with bleachers, and the number of spectators allowed in is limited to the number of seats. We saw long lines, and we didn't want to stand around waiting for people already in the stands to leave so that we might get a chance to enter. We could have been waiting all day. If we ever went to this tournament again, which we probably won't, we'd make a point of going to the 16th first thing in the morning and getting some seats even if it meant waiting an hour and a half or so for the first groups who teed off on hole #10 to make their way around to this hole. We have been to other PGA tour events over the years, including the PGA Championship, The U.S. Open, The Memorial, the WGC at Firestone, and twice to The Players Championship. In all of those situations, the focus was the golf, and the fans were appropriately respectful. I wish that were more in evidence at the Phoenix Open.

by Cindyosphr on 2/3/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleWe thoroughly enjoyed the golf tournament and would go again. Next year we would liek to attend more than one day.
Rating: 5 out of 5 A fun time there!
by Bluestar6 on 2/2/13TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleWe sat in the bleachers for a while,no charge, and enjoyed watching the pros up close. Then we meandered around the tents and had an enjoyable time. Luch, drinkks etc. The courtesy bus layout and procedure was top notch!
Rating: 4 out of 5 More than a golf tournament
by Anonymous on 2/14/12TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleSaturday is insane and plan on something other than a golf tournament. It is the party day for the tournament. The down part is the loud, drunken, foul language and the trash. HELLO Phoenix, it is the Waste Management Open. Pick up your trash! Otherwise moving day is always exciting. Sunday is great! Very easy to get around and to get prime seats at the 16th stadium.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 2/12/12TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale Great time. Everything is very well done. Weather was perfect. Can't wait to go next year!
Rating: 3 out of 5 3rd Round
by golfchic on 2/6/12TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleBeautiful day to sit around in the grass. Transportation to and from the public parking lots was well organized. Overall, it was too crowded (173K+ people that day) to be enjoyable. So many corporate tents made it hard to find good viewing spots.
Rating: 1 out of 5 Too crowded!
by RJ1102 on 2/6/12TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleI went to the Waste Management Open on Saturday the 4th. It was ridiculously crowded and unfortunately the majority of the crowd consisted of young and drunk 20 somethings and not there to enjoy the sport. The concession lines were way too long. Also, the line to get back to my car from the parking lot was probably about a mile long. We ended up paying for a cab to get us back to our car. I did not enjoy the day and was very disappointing. It seems that the Waste Management did not do a good job at capping the attendance level to a manageable level.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Wasted Management Open
by Hammer8266 on 2/5/12TPC Scottsdale - ScottsdaleWell, one of my goals was to hang out at the 16th hole and join the crowd there. There was at least an hour wait to get to even see the hole. If you didnt have a corporate pass or grandstand pass, you were out of luck. So, never saw the 16th, just heard the cheers and boos from afar. Otherwise got to see some great golf on the other holes.
