Washington Commanders History

The Washington Commanders were founded as the Boston Braves in 1932 and are one of the original members of the NFL's Eastern Division.

In 1937, they moved to Washington, where they won their first game in D.C. against the New York Giants, and have since become one of the most recognizable professional sports franchises in history. They have 32 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and one recipient of the Walter Payton NFL Man of The Year Award — Darrell Green. The team has won five league championship titles (1937, 1942, 1982, 1987, and 1991), five conference championships, 15 division championships, and have made 25 playoff appearances.

Washington Commanders at Commanders Field

Located in Summerfield, Maryland, five miles east of Washington, D.C., Commanders Field opened in 1997 as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. FedEx purchased the naming rights for the stadium in 1999, and the building was known as FedExField until 2024. Commanders Field has a capacity of 67,717 for Commanders games. The stadium features five levels of seating, including the Bobby Mitchell Level, Joe Gibbs Club Level and Pete Rozelle Upper Level — all named after Pro Football Hall of Famers who made an impact on the Commanders’ career.

The Commanders were also the first NFL team to have a marching band starting in 1937. To this day, the Commanders Marching Band is one of only two professional football marching bands, and continues to entertain fans during pre-game and halftime performances.

by Chico on 8/9/21FedExField - Landover

I was overwhelmed by the generosity of The WFT! I’ve never felt so honored to be a season ticket holder. Free ticket, free parking, free food, free beer and cocktails. I have told all my friends and co-workers and they don’t believe me. The workers were all very nice and kind. Thanks to all involved. HTTWFT

    Parking

    by B on 8/9/21FedExField - Landover

With no parking pass to hang in my car window the line moves far too slow to enter the stadium parking area. Digital tickets for parking is not a good idea. This event only had 20,000 people wait until the regular season starts parking is going to be a mess

Good for a summer event with kids or friends. Seeing the team and getting the crowd connected and engaged for the start of the season was great. The pyro show at the end was amazing and such a fun treat. Would definitely do it again.

My family and I had a good time watching what we missed.

    by Big-Mac on 8/9/21FedExField - Landover

It was a nice family day making memories from buying products, eating food, (for me) analyzing players and last, the awesome firework show. My family like the WFT’s fireworks better than the DC monument’s and it also allows fans to leave dispersedly and not in a crowd. Overall, we had a fantastic time and with something to look forward to this season.

Really enjoyed being out side we love the team !!

by Robin on 8/9/21FedExField - Landover

It was great to be out seeing the team all together we had a terrible problem with the Wi-Fi and our tickets it took about 20 minutes of our time trying to walk around and connect with the Wi-Fi!! Justice show scanning part of the ticket even though we had the purchase receipt I know it was free but if I would have been paying I would be truly upset the band was great overall satisfaction totally.

    Sucked

by Nick on 8/9/21FedExField - Landover

The food sucked was burnt and overpriced. I have seen high school football practice and workouts that were more interesting than that event
