WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.
The performances were fantastic, everyone was on their feet dancing and singing. My husband and I had a great time; we'd love to see them again!
I was disappointed. With the audience clapping and asking for an Encore both bands did not come out. War takes so much time introducing their band members that they could have played out two or so more hits. The audience is there to hear them play their hits not to listen to a dragged out introduction. Its a matter of time before their audience start to shrink.
War was excellent and the other bands were okay. Bathrooms are way too small for the size of the venue. Alot of older people and not enough buses to take them up the hill
AWB performed classics that everyone enjoyed. They had a great sound and were fun to watch and listen to, as always. War also did not disappoint the crowd. They played the music that got people up on their feet. The venue was also fantastic -- very much improved with a good sound system.
The synergy of the individual bands was unmistakable, as each of their unique sounds prominantly poured through their song sets. The rythym sounds from AWB, and sax riffs were so peaceful and yet uplifting, making one think they were back in the 70's. War had the best of all worlds through both lyrics and music as they played all of their hits, including an updated version of "Spill the Wine." I truly had forgotten how many great songs War had made, and each successive song simply made me smile both inside and out. "Slipping Into Darkness" was fabulous!!
War was awesome! They sounded great. Would see them again in a minute.
took my kids - they loved the music- but floor seats were too crowded!
the concert was great with both bands, i enjoyed the music and the place it was located...
THE CONCERT WAS GREAT, PLAYED ALL MY FAVORITES AND THE SOUND WAS AMAZING !
This was our first visit to a show at Centennial Terrace. Loved the venue, beautiful event site and weather. Great to hear the old songs, do some dancing and reminisce with friends. Enjoyed it and would love to attend there again.
This was a great concert. I would recommend it to anyone who loved the 70s. Both AWB and WAR were on their game and provided a fantastic concert.
Outside terrace is perfect for summer events, Bands sounded great, Bands worked the crowd.
AWB came out first and they were very good; it was obvious who the 2 original band members were just because of their age! But another vocalist/keyboard/guitar player was a fantastic addition to the 2 original guys. Overall, they sounded great! WAR had only 1 original band member left but luckily, he was the lead vocalist so that sure helped take you back to the "day"! Great harmonica and sax players; just fun to hear all the old stuff.
Average White Band is a really Classy act today.I got more than I bargained for with their performance. Their new CD is a great way to start a day because it lift your mood positively. War is today as fresh as it was in 1973. Only missed ' The world is a getto".I wonder why.
War was even better than expected! They really rocked the place. People were dancing in the isles. The bad was great and really mixed it up!
This was an outstanding concert. WAR truly entertaining and well worth it. The percusions and accustics were GREAT!!! WAR is just as good as they were back in the day!!!!
Breath taking sounds, memorable music, eternally old / new school. I will support them over and over and over again!
The "War" concert was great. My husband and I had a really good time. War was on time with the first song which is my favorite "Country, City". The food was good and the audience had a lot of engery and I knew all of us were giving a good time.
WAR was amazing. They sounded just like their old records in spite of having new members. They were great with their fans, close up and personal. They fit in as many selections as possible -- but they have so many that are good.
Me and 12 of my family and friends went to the show and was immediately transformed back to the 70's. The group's performance was superb and the venue was perfect! We all had a great time… I brought my 13 year old daughter for her 13th birthday. She is a big rock music fan but she tends to listen to the newer rock groups. I wanted her to experience a bit of what I enjoy and needless to say she wasn't thrilled to see a bunch of "old people" sing and dance. It wasn't long before she was enjoying the show herself. I believe WAR expanded her taste in music. She even put their new Live album on her iPod…thanks guys!
