WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • Everyone was great!

I enjoyed all the acts! A couple of the AWB songs didn't sound enough like the original songs; but the talent and all the other songs outshined any flaws. TofP was great with the musical instruments. The talent is awesome. War was a stellar performance and I can see how hard they work to put on an excellent show.

The show was full of energy, the sound could have been better a couple of times the feed back was evident. The seating was too close to the person seating next to you.

  • War and Tierra were great!

The concert was very good! I also should compliment the comedian that performed before War and Tierra, Patrick Candelaria. He was very funny!

  • TIerra was good. War was better.

Tierra's rendition of "Together Baby", was great. War was great but they should've played more. In most concerts, they give the audience a chance to ask and get at least a couple more songs. Not this one. They just turned on the lights and the musicians left. I was waiting for "Gypsy Man" and "She's From the Southern Part of Texas". No frills just good music, but we wanted more. The musicians that WAR had this time were excellent.

  • War & TIERRA was awesome!!

Tierra was probabaly better to see! War was great as always but they did extend Most their songs too much. Tierra was splendid with their tuning, their songs and their instrunmental playing!

I thoroughly enjoyed WAR and Tierra. And Patrick Candelaria was hilarious as usual.

  • War concerts are GREAT

My husband and I are totally WAR fans. We have seen them a few times in concert and each time is better. We are looking forward to attending the WAR, AWB and Tower of Power concert in Los Angeles during the last weekend in May. I'm sure ,if and when WAR performs again in the future... We'll be there...

  • One of the best concerts in a long time

by RoadKingZZ on 5/16/10Abraham Chavez Theatre - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

Patrick Candelaria was perfect -- funny and timely. Got us all in the mood to have fun. TIERRA was really, really good. They put on a great show, particularly the trumpet player, I think his name is Jeff Lewis. He was really fun to watch. The music was great. It was old stuff but sounded contemporary. Their part of the show was as good as WAR's -- just not as many big hits. WAR was good. I've seen them several times in the past ten years. Lonnie Jordan is, of course, the only original member. He's as good vocally as ever, but I'd rather hear the songs the way they were recorded, or at least closer to the way they were recorded. "Spill the Wine" was nothing like the original. Lonnie's "cutesy" modernization was way too much talking and left me wanting to turn on my Walkman to hear the original. The show was all fun and sounded pretty much like the originals, even though a lot of the original instruments weren't available. The sax player was great and the harmonica player played more than any harmonica player I've ever seen, providing much of that missing original sound. I loved it until, when Lonnie introduced the keyboard player as being from Phoenix, AZ, a bunch of dimwitted audience members booed him. Lonnie responded with a "Yeah, I know." Can we please keep politics out of the concerts? All-in-all, it was one of the best live concerts I've been to in a long, long time.

  • Old School is still Cool

by MrTunes on 5/16/10Abraham Chavez Theatre - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

Now that Rudy and Steve Salas have joined forces again, Tierra was the best I've seen of them in 20 yrs. Great energy, good set list, perfect tempo...... On the other hand, the long winded Lonnie Jordan wouldn't stop talking long enough to keep most songs under 10 minutes. Hard to get in all your hits like that. Which is why the end of show was rushed to meet their contractual deadline with the venue. Less talk, more singing and playing!

  • War!

by rockbassman on 5/16/10Abraham Chavez Theatre - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

War was excellent. Great songs, great musicianship, good presentation. Only problem was the opening act was way too long. Tierra was ok but considering they only had two real hits and one of those is a cover, their show was just way too long. Good band but may as well been any other casino or hotel band. The intermission was outrageously long and by the time War was on stage, the crowd had cooled a bit too much. I love War and their music and wish they had more time for more of their many hits. I think Tierra cheated us and them of time to enjoy a real band. Oh well, was not bad overall.

  • WAR FANS?

by WARQUEEN on 4/16/10Isleta Casino - AlbuquerqueRating: 1 out of 5

I have tried to post the truth 2 times about this band, but for some reason, someone doesn't want to know the truth and my posts have been shot down. Could have sworn I lived in the USA. As a diehard WAR fan, this is NOT the WAR you should be seeing. You are giving your money to a COVER band. Don't be fooled by the WAR name while the REAL OG's of WAR, the LOWRIDER BAND are forgotten. Peace.

  • WAR & AWB Rocked!!!!!!!!!!

    by Eman001 on 1/20/10Whitaker Center - HarrisburgRating: 4 out of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed the show. AWB sounded great and injected a lot of humor as well which was a bonus. WAR song all the songs I remembered although they where a little off from what I remember but was still good. They injected more humor than was necessary which stretched the songs out more. I missed the fact that they didn't play my favorite "The World is a Ghetto". However, they have so many hits I guess they have to leave out something.

  • AWB was great!!!

    by Summer10 on 1/20/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the show!! If there was one thing I could change, it would be to have AWB come on last. I thought WAR was good, but AWB was off the hook! I have soooo many fond memories of their music and wished that they could've performed some of their many other classics such as..."Love of your own", etc..I had a great time and look forward to seeing them again!!!!

  • War is still Funky after all these years!

by GroovyJan on 1/19/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 4 out of 5

Well, we didn't find the Keswick Theater until the very last song of the Average White Band. So I have nothing to say on them. WAR, however, was awesome! They don't have any new songs, but they played everything a WAR fan would want to hear. Cisco Kid, Why Can't We Be Friends, Spill The Wine, etc. I thought Lonnie and the gang put on a great show. I saw WAR perform about 15 years ago and thought they were so much fun, I vowed to see them again. Went with a friend who didn't even know what songs, other than Low Rider, that WAR had. She had an awesome time as well. They are definitely a fun band to see. There probably won't be any surprises, but it's a great time none the less! I will say that I found getting to the Keswick Theater to be a giant hassle. I only bought the tickets because I didn't see any other locations in the Philly/ S Jersey area. I think it's a beautiful theater with good acoustics, but much to much of a pain to get to if there is something else available.

  • AWESOME and MORE AWESOME!!

by Anonymous on 1/19/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

WAR never disappoints...they've been my favorite band since I first saw them in concert at the Spectrum where they previewed the cut, Ciy Country City off their not yet released The World Is A Ghetto album. AWB rocked it...those guys still got it! Best show I've been to for awhile. I like the old school music...with instruments...that's real talent. From what I observed, everybody had a good time!

  • WAR was better than I could have imagined

Had a great time ,would love to see them again, and again.

  • by Anonymous on 1/18/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

I bought the tickets for my husband for his Christmas present. The concert was fabuolus! It took us back to our teen and young adult years. AWB and War sang all of our favorite songs. We enjoyed from beginning to end. The venue was perfect. The crowd was friendly and we all remember the days when we partied to AWB and War songs.
