WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

I don't know why WAR could not get their poop together to get set up on a more appropriate time frame. Tower of Power put on the better show and didn't dork around getting their poop together and play great sounds. AWB - what a one hit wonder

War was incredible put on a great show. Enjoyed Tower but was disappointed that they covered other shows instead of playing their own. Missed most of AWB which hurt but loved what I heard.

What happened to the tall lead singer?.......This guy was okay but, I prefer more singing and less talking and orchestra playing.....He hasn't quite nailed it!!

  • Great show. I would go again next year.

The show was great from start to finish. Perfect weather. Parking was rough. I wish they has a shuttle service like the Hollywood Bowl.

WAR played as well as always but why did show end at 10:30p.m.?? Too early. Maybe next time they should play music instead of Lonnie Jordan TALKing sooo much. ! Was disappointed since we see WAR every year. We decided we'll just see them for free @LA County Fair. Not worth the $!00. ticket!!

Three bands with a very long historical run... Each entertained very professionally. Sound stage mixing noticeably imbalanced for Tower of Power (singer vs. Band) WAR seemed most relaxed... Could have played more hits. Nice evening!

  • Tower of Power was Awesome

by LAJoe on 5/30/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Tower of Power was awesome. With David Garibaldi (original drummer) and Rocco Prestia (original bassist) the band was tight and energetic. They uplifted the whole crowd at the Greek Theater and got us to our feet. Larry Braggs is a great singer and the horn section, well what can you say "Tower of Power Horns" are famous for good reason. If you haven't seen these masters of soulful funk, now is the time to go. They have been together for 42 years so don't miss them before it's too late. Also, they have done shows in the past without Garibaldi and Prestia. These guys are the heart of the funkiest band ever. The only reason why the overall show didn't get a five star rating is because War was a bit disappointing. They acted like a jam band with too much chatter and not enough music. The rest of the show as great.

  • Awesome

    by youngman1 on 5/30/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Since I did not see AWB I can not evaluate, Tower of Power put on an unforgetable show ( I had not ever seen them before) and of course the headliners WAR played an awesome show. I can never get enough and wanted more of the whole show. It seemed that it ended before I wanted it too. I will definitely go to the next R&B show when it comes around.

  • Hot Soul from the '70's

by jimmmyboy on 5/30/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

What a wonderful night! The Greek Theater in Griffith Park could be one of the nicest venues in the country. Added to this pastoral setting were three extraordinary soul, rock, jazz groups from the '70's - They still have it! Any one of the three could have been the main act - They were all excellent playing their old hits as well as other songs - They had all the energy and drive of their younger days and did not rely for one moment on past glory but played their hearts out as if every note and phrase mattered deeply. Their youthful drive and excellence were in sharp contrast to the visual of the older guys on stage who still rock with the best. Some of the key moments were the Average White band bass player who held the deep bottom together with style and sang like an angel. The singer for Tower of Power had the audience in his hand with his beautiful voice and joyous stage presence. The wonderful band leader of WAR was terrific and charismatice as ever even after 40 years. With the audience up and dancing for many of the songs the Greek rock, rolled and gyrated all night. What a terrific evening of joy, love, sweet funky music and lots of memories.

  • It was o.k.

by robott on 5/30/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I was disappointed that War didn't play a lot of their best songs like All Day Music, Spill the Wine and some others. It started at 6:30 and ended at 10:30. Much too early.

Average White Band was average. Tower of Power got the crowd groovin and as usual did not disappoint. i would have liked to have seen a longer set. WAR took the crowd's energy to the next level. The crowd went wild with Cisco Kid and the band continued to raise it's and the crowd's energy with each song. The band really seemed to be feeding off the crowd and to be enjoying playing for us.

  • I love War but this concert sucked

    by GeorgeLopez432156 on 5/30/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

the concert was a disapointment. We wanted to hear all the old school jams but instead we got some lame new stuff I never heard before and then long jamin sessions of a few old songs
