WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • Better with age . . . .

War brings it like no other 40-year old band! With one original member and others with the band for more than 10 years, they play tight, hot and non-stop. Each musician is highly accomplished on his own, yet hews to the original War sound as a group. Whether playing in a large venue or more intimate setting, please the crowd with all their hits and some surprises as well. They definitely know their audience, and keep it real by getting out into the crowd, inviting one or two lucky fans to participate, and spreading their message of peace thru music all night long. Unlike lots of other older bands, they played for two and a half hours without a break. Never a dull moment, and tremendous highlights.

  • War

by yannystu on 2/2/11Jazz Alley - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

This was the BEST concert I've seen at Jazz Alley bye far!!! I've always had great seats so obviously it's not the place but rather the band. All the other performers I've seen at Jazz Alley, I have seen at least every other year and that is probably the reason for my liking the War concert so much. Three of the original players were there, the lead singer (better then Eric Burton), the drummer, and the harmonica player. The horn player and bass player were fabulous and the bongo/drummer was pretty good too. I say the Band has very high expectations of it's members and they never let me down. A very tight band and a must. If you enjoyed them back in the late 60's you'll enjoy them still. They sound just as good if not better now. Would love to see them again!!!!

Great music, loved the songs. Dinner service was very poor. Food was good, but it took forty five minutes to get our food. No explanation or excuse.

Well, what can i say! This is the 3rd time i have seen War and every time is fantastic. War works the crowd to make the whole evening one to remember. the only complaint i had was the food at the Grove, it wasn't bad just a little overpriced for the quality.

They were phenomenal. They did a medley of many famous songs and each year although we expect with age that they might not be as good as the year before -NOT!- THEY ARE GREAT!! how do they do it after all these years. The drummer and sax player are the BOMB! We had a wonderfull time especially because at a FAIR concert there is not too much crowding and you can really get into the rythm of the songs. LOVED WAR!!!!!!!!

  • War was disappointing this year! :(

by PoorPerformance on 9/28/10Los Angeles County Fair - PomonaRating: 1 out of 5

We have been attending the WAR concert at the LA County Fair for the last few years. This concert was by far the most disappointing one yet. The sound quality was very poor and low. The concert ended earlier than the past years. Some of their most memorable songs were left out this year as well. Being a huge fan as I am, I am so sad to say that I regret paying the amount I did for the tickets. Even if they were free, I would still have been as disappointed as I am right now. The only good thing I have to say is that Sal put on a great performance on his solo. Suggestion, more vocals would be great and less instrumentals. Don't get me wrong, instrumentals are great, but it would be nice to hear the entire vocals of each song along with the instrumentals.

  • War was enjoable

i enjoyed every minute of the concert from the first song to the last. I was on my feet for all but 2 songs. Danced the whole time, laughed, I was singing along and went thru memory lane.

This band is the best ever! I remember seeing them play at Lincoln park in Los Angeles. If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure it was on 4th of July in 1976. Their music was great then and there music is great now!! I enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm and love they have for their music and their fans!! Their show was awesome!!

  • by JHCJC on 9/13/10Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 1 out of 5

The mix never goy sounding right. If fact we are all musicians that wenet to the show nand compared them to a typical bar band you would fins at any local tavern. They seemed bored and too comfortable with the songs. We were sorry we went and all left early. Felt totally ripped off for the $60.00 plus dollars we all paid for each ticket. Lonnie should know how to put a band together better then he did on this one. We will highly NOT reccommened WAR to anyone.
